Microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSR) are widely distributed in eukaryotic genomes and are informative genetic markers. Despite many advantages of SSR markers such as a high degree of allelic polymorphisms, co-dominant inheritance, multi-allelism, and genome-wide coverage in various plant species, they also have shortcomings such as low polymorphic rates between genetically close lines, especially in Capsicum annuum. We developed an alternative technique to SSR by normalizing and alternating anchored primers in random amplified microsatellite polymorphisms (RAMP). This technique, designated reverse random amplified microsatellite polymorphism (rRAMP), allows the detection of nucleotide variation in the 3' region flanking an SSR using normalized anchored and random primer combinations. The reproducibility and frequency of polymorphic loci in rRAMP was vigorously enhanced by translocation of the 5' anchor of repeat sequences to the 3' end position and selective use of moderate arbitrary primers. In our study, the PCR banding pattern of rRAMP was highly dependent on the frequency of repeat motifs and primer combinations with random primers. Linkage analysis showed that rRAMP markers were well scattered on an intra-specific pepper map. Based on these results, we suggest that this technique is useful for studying genetic diversity, molecular fingerprinting, and rapidly constructing molecular maps for diverse plant species.

Uncertainties in physical and engineering parameters for the design of shallow foundations arise from various aspects such as inherent variability and measurement error. This paper aims at investigating and reducing uncertainty from deterministic method by using the reliability-based design of shallow foundations accounting for the variation of various design parameters. A probability distribution type and statistics of random variables such as unit weight, cohesion, infernal friction angle and Young's modulus in geotechnical engineering are suggested to calculate the ultimate bearing capacities and immediate settlements of foundations. Reliability index and probability of failure are estimated based on the distribution types of random variables. Widths of foundation are calculated at target reliability index and probability of failure. It is found that application and analysis of the best-fit distribution type for each random variables are more effective than adoption of the normal distribution type in optimizing the reliability-based design of shallow foundations.
Under the strong leadership of Chinese Government to the anti-SARS struggle, the situation has been successfully controlled. Since May 1 of 2003, the Ministry of Health of China published daily the number of newly increased SARS patient of Beijing, the authors analyzed these data using $X_cs$$-R_scs$ cause-selecting control charts of Statistical Diagnosis(SPD) Theory. Data about number of newly increased SARS patient consists of two kinds of variation: random variation and tendency variation of SARS epidemic. It is concluded that SARS epidemic of Beijing was already controlled since May 9 of 2003.
The genetic variation in Korean evening primorse (Oeothera odorata L.) populations was examiend to estimate the level of allozyme variation within populatons using starch gel electrophoresis. 7 of 13 loci (Adh, Est-1, Est-2, Mdh-2, Pgd-2, Pgm-1, and Idh) revealed (Ps=43.2%) were polymorphic. The mean number of alleles per locus (A) and polymorphic locus (Ap) for populations were 1.64 and 2.46, respectively. The effective number of alleles (Aep) within populations relatively was low ranging from 1.08 to 1.22 with a mean of 1.14. Within populations, the mean number of allele per polymorphic loci (Ap) was 2.46, the mean number of alleles per locus (A) was 1.64, and the mean genetic diversity was 0.093. About 2.7% of the total allozyme diversity resided among populations (Mean GST=0.0274). FIS, a measure of the deviation from random mating within 13 populations, was relative low (mean FIS=0.03636). The indirect estimate of gene flow, based on the mean GST, was high (Nm=8.88). Estimates of gene flow were consistent with low levels of genetic differentiation among populations.

A robust optimization procedure is applied to determine the design of the laminated composite plates with buckling constraints. In order to investigate the variation effect to the whole performance of a structure, both design variables and system parameters are assumed as random variables about their nominal values. The robust optimization method has advantages that the mean value and the variation of the performance function are controlled simultaneously and the second order sensitivity information is not required. Considering the information of uncertainty, robust optima for the buckling load of the laminated composite plates with cut-out is obtained. The robustness of the structures is compared to that of the deterministic optimization using scaling factors.

There is a trade-off between read stability and writability under a full-/half-select condition in static random access memory (SRAM). Another trade-off in the minimum operating voltage between the read and write operation also exists. A new peripheral circuit for SRAM arrays, called a variation sensor, is demonstrated here to balance the read/write margins (i.e., to optimize the read/write trade-off) as well as to lower the minimum operation voltage for both read and write operations. A test chip is fabricated using an industrial 45-nm bulk complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process to demonstrate the operation of the variation sensor. With the variation sensor, the word-line voltage is optimized to minimize the trade-off between read stability and writability ($V_{WL,OPT}=1.055V$) as well as to lower the minimum operating voltage for the read and write operations simultaneously ($V_{MIN,READ}=0.58V$, $V_{MIN,WRITE}=0.82V$ for supply voltage $(V_{DD})=1.1V$).
In this paper, wireless monitoring of typhoon-induced variation of dynamic characteristics of a cable-stayed bridge is presented. Firstly, cable-stayed bridge with the wireless monitoring system is described. Wireless vibration sensor nodes are utilized to measure accelerations from bridge deck and stay cables. Also, modal analysis methods are selected to extract dynamic characteristics. Secondly, dynamic responses of the cable-stayed bridge under the attack of two typhoons are analyzed by estimating relationships between wind velocity and dynamic characteristics. Wind-induced variations of deck and cable vibration responses are examined based on the field measurements under the two consecutive typhoons, Bolaven and Tembin. Finally, time-varying analyses are performed to investigate non-stationary random properties of the dynamic responses under the typhoons.

In this paper, we present parameter optimization technique for GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well avalanche photodiodes used for image capture mechanism in high-definition system. Even under flawless environment in semiconductor manufacturing process, random variation in process parameters can bring the fluctuation to device performance. The precise modeling for this variation is thus required for accurate prediction of device performance. The precise modeling for this variation is thus required for accurate prediction of device performance. This paper will first use experimental design and neural networks to model the nonlinear relationship between device process parameters and device performance parameters. The derived model was then put into genetic algorithms to acquire optimized device process parameters. From the optimized technique, we can predict device performance before high-volume manufacturign, and also increase production efficiency.

The classical statistical approach using test data samples to estimate true value of Random Variables by calculating mean and variation (standard deviation or coefficient of variation) of samples is very useful to understand the existing condition of the structure. But with this classical approach, our prior knowledge through educational background and professional experience cannot provide any benefit to make decisions by the structural engineers. This paper shows the role of Bayesian methodology by providing chance of using valuable prior knowledge to come up with more accurate estimation of structural condition. This paper also shows how important it is to have a proper prior estimate of Random Variables and corresponding confidence level through gathering and studying more relevant information.
Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to investigate the genetic variations of Coreoleuciscus splendidus within and among the West Korea Subdistrict populations (in Han and Geum Rivers) and the South Korea Subdistrict populations (in Seomjin and Nakdong Rivers). Twelve random primers were employed to generate RAPD markers. All primers were produced to identify specific RAPD markers between the West and South Korea Subdistrict populations. Analyses of genetic similarity and distance among the West and South Korea Subdistrict populations of C. splendidus also revealed similar results, with low genetic similarity (0.49~0.53) and high distance value (0.63~0.71). UPGMA dendrogram based on genetic distance was also similar in results. Therefore, the West Korea Subdistrict populations and the South Korea Subdistrict populations vary in genetic structure, and C. splendidus in the South Korea Subdistrict may represent a different species.
