  • Compressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in two dimension is studied through high-resolution, numerical simulations with the isothermal equation of state. First, hydrodynamic turbulence with Mach number $(M)_{rms}\;\~$1 is generated by enforcing a random force. Next, initial, uniform magnetic field of various strengths with Alfvenic Mach number Ma $\gg$ 1 is added. Then, the simulations are followed until MHD turbulence is fully developed. Such turbulence is expected to exist in a variety of astrophysical environments including clusters of galaxies. Although no dissipation is included explicitly in our simulations, truncation errors produce dissipation which induces numerical resistivity. It mimics a hyper-resistivity in our second-order accurate code. After saturation, the resulting flows are categorized as SF (strong field), WF (weak field), and VWF (very weak field) classes respectively, depending on the average magnetic field strength described with Alfvenic Mach number, $(Ma)_{rms}{\ge}1$, $(Ma)_{rms}{\~}1$, and $(Ma)_{rms}{\gg}1$. The characteristics of each class are discussed.

  • Spectral features of the seismic wave propagation from Odaesan Earthquake were evaluated based on the commonly treated random error between the observed data and the prediction values by the stochastic point-source ground-motion spectral model regarding the source, path and site effects. Radiation pattern of the error according to azimuth angle was found to be similar to the theoretical estimate. It was also observed that the spatial distribution of the errors was correlated with the geological map and the Q0 map which are indicatives of seismic boundaries.

  • Polymer materials are very difficult to decompose for the purpose of chemical analysis. Nondestructive analysis without pretreatment provides a suitable solution that will overcome this obstacle. In this study, CRM candidate samples that contained toxic elements such as As, Cd, Cr and Zn in a polypropylene (PP) were analyzed using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The analytical results were obtained from ten samples selected by random sampling at two different concentration levels (low and high). Particular attention was paid to reducing analytical errors and evaluating the associated uncertainty.

  • Recently, neural network methods have been studied to find out more valuable information in data bases. But the supervised learning methods of neural networks have an overfitting problem, which leads to errors of target patterns. And the unsupervised learning methods can distort important information in the process of regularizing data. Thus they can't efficiently classify data, To solve the problems, this paper introduces a hybrid neural networks HACAB(Hybrid Algorithm combining a Competition learning model And BP Algorithm) combining a competition learning model and 8P algorithm. HACAB is designed for cases which there is no target patterns. HACAB makes target patterns by adopting a competition learning model and classifies input patterns using the target patterns by BP algorithm. HACAB is evaluated with random input patterns and Iris data In cases of no target patterns, HACAB can classify data more effectively than BP algorithm does.

  • The average velocity, 330km/sec. of the high velocity stars with respect to the galactic center is obtained from the data used by Fricke on the assumption that the rotational velocity of the Local Standard of Rest is 250km/sec. Comparing this value with the escape velocity, 380km/sec, at the solar neighborhood which is calculated from Mestel's model of the Galaxy, it is shown that most of the high velocity stars are bound to the Galaxy and that their average apogalacticon is about 40 kpc from the galactic center. And the fact that stars with radial velocities larger than 63km/sec are missing in the direction of galactic rotation of L.S.R. is interpreted as the result partly of the random distribution of the directions of motion of the high velocity stars and partly of the observational errors.

  • Stereo vision is useful in obtaining three dimensional depth information from two images taken from different view points. Neural network modeling for stereo matching, the key step in stereo vision, is defined by an energy function satisfying with three constraints proposed by Marr and Poggio. Stereo matching is then carried out through the network to find minimum energy corresponding to the optimized solution of the problem. An algorithm for stereo matching using an analog neural network is presented here. The network can reduce errors in initial state an early iteration steps by adoption of continuous sigmoid function in stead of binary state. The experimental results show good matching performance for sparse random dot stereogram and real image.

  • In this paper, the efficient architecture of small Reed-solomon architecture is suggested. Here, 3-stage pipeline is adopted. In decoding, error-location polynomials are obtained by BMA using fast iteration method, and syndrome polynomials, where calculation complexity is required, are obtained by parallel calculation using ROM table, and the roots of error location polynomial are calculated by ROM table using Chein search algorithm. In the suggested decoder, it is confirmed that 3 symbol random errors can be corrected and 124Mbps decoding rate is obtained using 25 Mhz system clock.

  • High accuracy of the load forecasting for power systems improves the security of the power system and generation cost. However, the forecasting problem is difficult to handle due to the nonlinear and the random-like behavior of system loads as well as weather conditions and variation of economical environments. So far. many studies on the problem have been made to improve the prediction accuracy using deterministic, stochastic, knowledge based and artificial neural net(ANN) method. In the conventional load forecasting method, the load forecasting maximum error occurred for the holidays on Saturday and Monday. In order to reduce the load forecasting error of the daily peak load for the holidays on Saturday and Monday, fuzzy concept and linear regression theory have been adopted into the load forecasting problem. The proposed algorithm shows its good accuracy that the average percentage errors are 2.11% in 1996 and 2.84% in 1997.

  • In code division multiple access systems using all-optical signal processing, the optical multiple access interference by simultaneous multiple users degrades the system performance and eventually can limit the number of active users. To reduce the effect of the interference, error-correction codes are used in 2-dimensional FO-CDMA systems. In this paper we propose a method of applying product code to 2-dimensional FO-CDMA systems. The proposed coding scheme can correct a random error and burst errors with small redundancy to the conventional case. In result we show significant performance enhancement of the system in terms of HER, the number of active users.

  • Though conventional calorimetry methods such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) are used generally in measuring heat of fusion, T-history method has the advantages of a simple experimental apparatus and no requirements of sampling process, which is particularly useful for measuring thermal properties of inhomogeneous phase change materials (PCMs) in sealed tubes. However, random criteria (a degree of supercooling) used in selecting the range of latent heat release and neglecting sensible heat during the phase change process can cause significant errors in determining the heat of fusion. In the present study, it was shown that a 40% discrepancy exists between the original T-history and the present methods when analyzing the same experimental data. As a result, a reasonable modification to the original T-history method is proposed.
