Only employing historical data limits the estimation of the full distribution of probable Tropical Cyclone (TC) risk due to the insufficiency of samples. Addressing this limitation, this study introduces a semi-physical TC rainfall model that produces spatially and temporally resolved TC rainfall data to improve TC risk assessments. The model combines a statistical-based track model based on the Markov renewal process to produce synthetic TC tracks, with a physics-based model that considers the interaction between TC and the atmospheric environment to estimate TC rainfall. The simulated data from the combined model are then fitted to a probability distribution function to compute the spatially heterogeneous risk brought by landfalling TCs. The methodology is employed in South Korea as a case study to be able to implement a country-scale-based vulnerability inspection from damaging TC impacts. Results show that the proposed model can produce TC tracks that do not only follow the spatial distribution of past TCs but also reveal new paths that could be utilized to consider events outside of what has been historically observed. The model is also found to be suitable for properly estimating the total rainfall induced by landfalling TCs across various points of interest within the study area. The simulated TC rainfall data enable us to reliably estimate extreme rainfall from higher return periods that are often overlooked when only the historical data is employed. In addition, the model can properly describe the distribution of rainfall extremes that show a heterogeneous pattern throughout the study area and that vary per return period. Overall, results show that the proposed approach can be a valuable tool in providing sufficient TC rainfall samples that could be an aid in improving TC risk assessment.
The rainfall pattern analysis on time distribution characteristics of rainfall rates in important in determination of design flow for hydraulic structures, particularly in urban area drainage network system design. The historical data from about 400 storm samples during 31 years in Seoul have been used to investigate the time distribution of 5-minute rainfall in the warm season. Time distribution relations have been deveolped for heavy stroms over 20mm in total rainfall and represented by relation percentage of total storm rainfall to percentage of total storm time and grouping the data according to the quartile in which rainfall was heaviest. And also time distribution presented in probability terms to provide quantitative information on inter-strom variability. The resulted time distribution relations are applicable to construction of rainfall hyetograph of design storm for determination of design flow hydrograph and identification of rainfall pattern at given watershed area. They can be used in conjuction with informations on spatstorm models for hydrologic applications. It was found that second-quartile storms occurred most frequently and fourth-quartile storms most infrequently. The time distribution characteristics resulted in this study have been presented in graphic forms such as time distribution curves with probability in cumulative percent of storm-time and precipitation, and selected histograms for first, second, third, and fourth quartile stroms.

Design rainfall using LH-moments following the consecutive duration were derived by the regional and at-site analysis using the observed and simulated data resulted from Monte Carlo techniques. RRMSE, RBIAS and RR in RRMSE for the design rainfall were computed and compared in the regional and at-site frequency analysis. Consequently, it was shown that the regional analysis can substantially more reduce the RRMSE, RBIAS and RR in RRMSE than at-site analysis in the prediction of design rainfall. RE for an optimal order of L-moments was also computed by the methods of L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments for GEV distribution. It was found that the method of L-moments is more effective than the others for getting optimal design rainfall according to the regions and consecutive durations in the regional frequency analysis. Diagrams for the design rainfall derived by the regional frequency analysis using L-moments were drawn according to the regions and consecutive durations by GIS techniques.
In Korea, most of the rainfalls have been concentrated in the flood season and the flood study has received more attention than low flow analysis. One of the reasons that the analysis of low flows has less attention is the lacks of the required data like daily rainfall and so we have used the stochastic processes such as pulse noise, exponential distribution, and state model of Markov chain for the rainfall simulation in short term such as daily. Especially this study will pay attention to the state model of Markov chain. The previous study had performed the simulation study by the state model without considerations of the flood and non-flood periods and without consideration of the frequency of rainfall for the period of a state. Therefore this study considers afore mentioned two cases and compares the results with the known state model. As the results, the RMSEs of the suggested and known models represent the similar results. However, the PRE(relative percentage error) shows the suggested model is better results.

Typhoons occurred in the tropical Pacific region, these might be affected the Korea moving toward north. The strong winds and the heavy rains by the typhoons caused a natural disaster in Korea. In the research, the heavy rainfall events based on typhoons were evaluated quantitative through various statistical techniques. First, probability precipitation and typhoon probability precipitation were compared using frequency analysis. Second, EST probability precipitation was calculated by Empirical Simulation Techniques (EST). Third, NL probability precipitation was estimated by coupled Nonparametric monte carlo simulation and Locally weighted polynomial regression. At the analysis results, the typhoons can be effected Gangneung and Mokpo stations more than other stations. Conversely, the typhoons can be effected Seoul and Inchen stations less than other stations. Also, EST and NL probability precipitation were estimated by the long-term simulation using observed data. Consequently, major hydrologic structures and regions where received the big typhoons impact should be review necessary. Also, EST and NL techniques can be used for climate change by the global warming. Because, these techniques used the relationship between the heavy rainfall events and the typhoons characteristics.
A slope may fail after construction owing to external factors such as localized rainfall, earthquake, and weathering. Therefore, the grasp of failure probability for slope failures is necessary to maintain their stability. In particular, it is very difficult to detect the symptoms of rock slope failure in advance by using traditional methods, such as displacement due to the brittleness of rocks. However, Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques can predict slope failures earlier than the traditional methods. This study grasped failure probability of slope by applying AE techniques to a rock slope with a history of collapse. When applying AE techniques to a slope that has a high probability of failure, the grasp of failure probability of the specific location became possible.
This study suggested the parameter estimation method for given rainfall events to be properly expressed by the beta distribution. For this purpose, this study compared the characteristics of probability density function with the parameter proposed considering the cases with and without addition to the rainfall peak, and the cases of using the real hyetograph and the rearranged hyetograph about the rainfall peak. As an example, this study analyzed the independent rainfall events at Seoul in 2010 and the annual maximum independent rainfall events from 1961 to 2010. The results derived are as follows. First, this study confirmed the necessity of additional consideration on rainfall peak to mimic the real hyetograph of rainfall events by the beta distribution. Second, this study confirmed the case of using rearranged hyetograph about the rainfall peak derived a better beta distribution to well mimic the characteristics of real rainfall than the case using the real hyetograph.
