This study is conducted to eveluate the potential of a GIS to assist an application problem. GIS has been applied to rainfall-runoff modeling over Soyang area. Various rainfall-runoff models have been developed over the years. A distributed rainfall-runoff model is selected because it considers the topographic characteristics over the basin. GIS can handle the spatial data to enhance the modeling. GRASS-a public domain GIS S/W-is used for GIS tools. Digital database is generated, including soil map, vegetation map, digital elevation model, basin and subbasin map, and water stream. The inpu data for the model has been generated and manupulated using GIS. The database, model and GIS are integrated for on-line operation. The inflow hydrographs are tested for the flood of Sept., 1990. This shows the promising results even without the calibration.
The objective of this study is to develop a method of rainfall adjustment on duration and topographic elevation for rainfall data in Jejudo. The method of rainfall adjustment is based on the polynomial regression analysis for the hourly rainfall data and the distribution of observatories of korea meteorological administration. As the results of modeling have shown, duration and rainfall are more correlated than topographic elevation and rainfall, and the model which considers only an elevation exaggerates the amount of rainfall adjustment. Hence the model of duration-elevation-rainfall is more competitive to the natural rainfall event than the model of topographic elevation-rainfall. However this model require to supplement a small number of rainfall observatories and short observed period.
This study analyzed the applicability of a rainfall downscaling algorithm in space-time multifractal framework (RDSTMF) in Korean Peninsula. To achieve this purpose, the 8 heavy rainfall events that occurred in Korea during the period between 2008 and 2012 were analyzed using the radar rainfall imagery. The result of the analysis indicated that there is a strong tendency of the multifractality for all 8 heavy rainfall events. Based on the multifractal exponents obtained from the analysis, the parameters of the RDSTMF were obtained and the relationship between the average intensity of the rainfall events and the parameters of the RDSTMF was developed. Based on this relationship, the synthetic space-time rainfall fields were generated using the RDSTMF. Then, the generated synthetic space-time rainfall fields were compared to the observation. The result of the comparison indicated that the RDSTMF can accurately reproduce the multifractal exponents of the observed rainfall field up to 3rd order and the cumulative density function of the observed space-time rainfall field with a reasoable accuracy.
The subject basin of the research was the basin of Yeongcheon Dam located in the upper reaches of the Kumho River. The parameters of the model were derived from the results of abstracting topological properties out of rainfall-runoff observation data about heavy rains and Digital Elevation Modeling(DEM) materials. This research aimed at suggesting the applicability of the CELLMOD Model, a distribution-type model, in interpreting runoff based on the topological properties of a river basin, by carrying out runoff interpretation far heavy rains using the model. To examine the applicability of the model, the calculated peaking characteristics in the hydrograph was analyzed in comparison with observed values and interpretation results by the Clark Model. According to the result of analysis using the CELLMOD Model proposed in the present research for interpreting the rainfall-runoff process, the model reduced the physical uncertainty in the rainfall-runoff process, and consequently, generated improved results in forecasting river runoff. Therefore it was concluded that the algorithm is appropriate for interpreting rainfall-runoff in river basins. However, to enhance accuracy in interpreting rainfall-runoff it is necessary to supplement heavy rain patterns in subject basins and to subdivide a basin into minor basins for analysis. In addition, it is necessary to apply the model to basins that have sufficient observation data, and to identify the correlation between model parameters and the basin characteristics(channel characteristics).
Jeju Island, the heaviest raining area in Korea, is a volcanic Island located at the southernmost of Korea, but most streams are of the dry due to its hydrological/geological characteristics different from those of inland areas. Therefore, there are limitations in applying the results from the mainland to the studies on stream run-off characteristics analysis and water resource analysis of Jeju Island. In this study, the SWAT(soil & water assessment tool) model is used for the Hwabuk stream watershed located east of the downtown to calculate the long-term stream run-off rate, and WMS(watershed modeling system) and HEC-HMS(hydrologic modeling system) models are used to figure out the stream run-off characteristics due to short-term heavy rainfall. As the result of SWAT modelling for the long-term rainfall-runoff model for Hwabuk stream watershed in 2008, 5.66% of the average precipitation of the entire basin was run off, with 3.47% in 2009, 8.12% in 2010, and root mean square error(RMSE) and determination coefficient($R^2$) was 496.9 and 0.87, respectively, with model efficient(ME) of 0.72. From the results of WMS and HEC-HMS models which are short-term rainfall-runoff models, unless there was a preceding rainfall, the runoff occurred only for rainfall of 40mm or greater, and the run-off duration averaged 10~14 hours.

In this study, we developed the GIS-based Geomorpho-hydrological Watershed Modeling System($G^{2}WMS$) which could consider both nonlilear rainfall-runoff relationship based on Geomorpho-Climatic Unit Hydrograph(GCUH) as well as watershed system inducing river routing. The developed new model was calibrated at the gaged rainfall events at natural watersheds and previewed to apply at the ungaged mountain basins, such as Sulma basin for small mountain basin and Andong-Dam basin for large scale basin, compared single with partitioned basin in the observed unit hydrographs and rainfall-discharge events. Finally, at the large scale Andong dam basin, we concluded that partitioned basin cases which including th nonlinear GCUH and river routing methods were superior to single basins which including the traditional methods in rainfall-discharge simulation at the mountain basins.
This study examined characteristic differences by the rainfall direction on the runoff responses. The directional characteristics of hydrological components in a basin were quantified by von Mises distribution. The runoff hydrograph was derived using the result of convolution integration of each distribution and this hydrograph was compared with GIUH model and observed data. As a result, it was found that runoff response by rainfall direction was more similar the observed rainfall-runoff data than the runoff result using GIUH model. These results implies that runoff modeling could be improved by considering directional components in hydrologic analysis. This study would be helpful to reduce uncertainties of hydrologic analysis considering a non-linearity of rainfall-runoff process by the rainfall direction.
According to the report of hydrologic modeling study, from a quantitative point of view, a lumped model is more efficient than a distributed model. A distributed model has to simplify geospatial characteristics for the shake of restricted application on computer calculation and field observation. In this reason, a distributed model can not help having some errors of water quantity modelling. However, considering a distribution of rainfall-runoff reflected spatial characteristics, a distributed model is more efficient to simulate a flow of surface water, The purpose of this study is modeling of spatial rainfall-runoff of surface water using grid based distributed model, which is consisted of storage function model and essential basin-channel parameters( slope, flow direction & accumulation), and that procedure is able to be executed at a personal computer. The prototype of this model is developed in Heongseong Multipunose Dam basin and adapted in Hapchon Multipurpose Dam basin, which is larger than the former about five times. The efficiency coefficients in result of two dam basin simulations are more than about 0.9, but ones at the upstream water level gauge station meet with bad result owing to overestimated rating curves in high water level. As a result of this study, it is easily implemented that spatially distributed rainfall-runoff model using GIS, and geophysical characteristics of the catchment, hereafter it is anticipated that this model is easily able to apply rainfall data by real time.

The Tonle Sap is the richest and diverseness of freshwater ecosystem in Southeast Asia, receiving nurturing water flows from the Mekong and its immediate basin. In addition, the rapid development in the Tonle Sap Lake (TSL) Basin, and flood inundation may threaten the natural diversities and characteristics. The impacts of flood inundation in 11 sub-basins contributing to the Tonle Sap Lake were assessed using the Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) model to quantify the potential magnitude and extent of the flooding. The RRI model is set up by using gauged rainfall data to simulate the information of river discharge and flood inundation of huge possible flood events. Moreover, two satellite precipitation products (SPPs), CHIRPS and GSMaP, within respectively spatial resolutions of 0.05° and 0.1°, are utilized as an input for the RRI model to simulate river discharge, flood depth, and flood extent for the great TSL Basin of Cambodia. This study used statistical indicators such as NSE, PBIAS, RSR, and R2 as crucial indices to evaluate the performance of the RRI model. Therefore, the findings of this study could provide promising guidance in hydrological modeling and the significant implications for flood risk management and disaster preparedness in the region.
