  • The RUSLE(Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) has been most widely used to estimate sediment yield in Korea. However RUSLE factors have not been verified based on measured data of sediment yield. The analysis of characteristics for the rainfall erosivity factor R was performed in this study. The R factor of RUSLE is expressed as multiple of total rainfall energy and maximum 30 min rainfall intensity. In this study, the characteristics of 10 rainfall energy equations were investigated using data measured in Gangneung experimental watershed, and applicability of each equations was reviewed based on results of the correlation analysis between measured sediment yield and total rainfall, between measured sediment yield and maximum intensity, and between measured sediment yield and total rainfall energy yield. Also, the relationship of I30 and I60 was proposed using 10-min rainfall data during 9 years.

  • Rainfall weather patterns have changed due to global warming and sudden heavy rainfalls have become more frequent. Economic loss due to heavy rainfall has increased. We study the generalized Pareto distribution for modelling rainfall in Seoul based on data from 1973 to 2008. We use several priors including Jeffrey's noninformative prior and Gibbs sampling method to derive Bayesian posterior predictive distributions. The probability of heavy rainfall has increased over the last ten years based on estimated posterior predictive distribution.

  • An optimization model is presented that can be used in the determination of a loss rate function and conceptual runoff models using observed rainfall and runoff data. In order to estimate the lumped parameters and to control inputs of the model, the differential equations, linear for underground flow and non-linear for overland flow, are transformed into state equations. Parameters of a loss rate function and runoff model under stationary assumption can be determined by the following procedures: optimization technique, linear control and non-linear curve fitting theory using several multiperiod storms simultaneously or using individual multiperiod storms. An infiltration equation that includes rainful intensity is used to dtermine the effective rainfall for a given rain of varying. The optimization model is applied to storms in Hyong Song watershed of Wonju area. The results of the new model are compared with earlier one.

  • Soil aggregation begins with flocculation of clay particles triggered by interfacial reactions of polyvalent cation such as Ca2+ and Fe3+, and they are also known as important elements to control the mobility of arsenic in soil environment. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of CMDS (coal mine drainage sludge) for soil loss reduction and stabilization of arsenic-contaminated soil in a 37% sloped farmland under rainfall simulation. The amount of soil loss decreased by 43% when CMDS was applied, and this result was not significantly different from the case of limestone application, which yielded 46% decrease of soil loss. However, the relative amount of dispersed clay particles in the sediment CMDS-applied soil was 10% lower than that of limestone-applied soil, suggesting CMDS is more effective than limestone in inducing soil aggregation. The concentrations of bioavailable arsenic in CMDS amended soil decreased by 46%~78%, which was lower than the amount in limestone amended soil. Therefore, CMDS can be used as an effective amendment material to reduce soil loss and stabilize arsenic in sloped farmland areas.

  • In order to investigate the runoff characteristics of nonpoint source pollutants in the Lake Doam watershed, water quality and flow rate were monitored for 38-rainfall events from 2009 to 2016. The EMC values of SS, COD, TN and TP were in the range of 33~2,169, 3.5~56.9, 0.09~7.65 and $0.06{\sim}2.21mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. As a result of analyzing the effect of rainfall factor on the nonpoint source pollutant load, EMCs of SS, COD and TP showed a statistically significant correlation with rainfall (RA) (p<0.01) and SS showed highly significant correlation with maximum rainfall intensity (MRI, R=0.48). The load ranges of SS, COD, TN and TP were 10.4~11,984.6, 1.1~724.4, 0.6~51.6 and $0.03{\sim}22.85ton\;event^{-1}$, respectively, showing large variation depending on the characteristics of rainfall events. The effect of rainfall on the load was analyzed. SS, COD and TP showed a positive correlation, but TN did not show any significant correlation. The annual load of SS was the highest with $88,645tons\;year^{-1}$ in 2011 when rainfall was the highest with 1,669 mm. The result of impact analysis of nonpoint source pollution reduction project and land-use change on runoff load showed that pollutant load significantly reduced from 2009 to 2014 but SS and TP loads were increased from 2014 to 2016 due to increase in construction area. Therefore, we suggested that nonpoint source pollution abatement plan should be continued to reduce the soil loss and pollutants during rainfall, and countermeasures to reduce nonpoint source pollution due to construction need to be established.

  • Many landslides have been taken place during the wet season in Korea. Rainfall in one of the most significant factors relevant to the landsildes, which cause a great loss of lived and properties every year, However, forecast systems for landslides have not been sufficiently established in Korea. In order to minimize a disaster due to landslides, the relationship between landslides and rainfall was investigated based on meteorological records and landslides occrrence ranging from 1977 to 1987. According to rainfall patterns which cause landslides, such as the daily rainfall on failure day or the cumulative rainfalls before failure day, the area in which landslides were taken place, could be divided into three groups of Middl area, Young- Ho Nam area, and Young-Dong Area. And the frequency of landslides was also dependent on the hourly rainfall intensity. It shows from the analyses that prediction of landslides can be made based on both the cumulative rainfall and the hourly rainfall intensity.

  • A correction method of reflectivity in partial beam blockage (PBB) area is suggested, which is based on the combination of digital terrain information and self-consistency principle between polarimetric observation. First, the reflectivity was corrected by adding the radar energy loss estimated from beam blockage simulation using digital elevation model (DEM) and beam propagation geometry in standard atmosphere. The additional energy loss by unexpected obstacles and non-standard beam propagation was estimated by using the coefficient between accumulated reflectivity ($Z_H$) and differences of differential phase shift (${\Phi}_{DP}$) along radial direction. The proposed method was applied to operational S-band dual-polarization radar at Jindo and its performance was compared with those of simulation method and self-consistency method for six rainfall cases. When the accumulated reflectivity and increment of ${\Phi}_{DP}$ along radial direction are too small, the self-consistency method has failed to correct the reflectivity while the combined method has corrected the reflectivity bias reasonably. The correction based on beam simulation showed the underestimation. For evaluation of rainfall estimation, the FBs (FRMSEs) of simulation method and self-consistency principle were -0.32 (0.59) and -0.30 (0.57), respectively. The proposed method showed the lowest FB (-0.24) and FRMSE (0.50). The FB and FMSE were improved by about 18% and by 19% in comparison to those before correction (-0.42 and 0.70). We can conclude that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of rainfall estimation in PBB area.

  • This study was attempted to derivate empirical formulas for the runoff: ratio during ilood. season at three watersheds of Dan Yang, Chung Ju, and Yeo Ju are located at upper, middle, and lower portion of Nam Han river basin, respectively. Obtained formulas for flood runoff ratio can be applied as an element for the estimation, peak discharge for the design of various hydraulics structures which can be concidented with meteorological and topographical condition. The obtained through this study were analyzed as follows. 1.It was found that the magnitude of runoff ratio depends on the amount of rainfall for all studying basins. 2.Empirical formulas 'for the runoff' ratio were derivated as 1- 2,707 Rt0.345, 1-1.691 Rt0.242 and 1-1.807 Rt0.227 at Dan Yang, Chung Ju and Yeo Ju watershed, respectively. 3.The magnitude of runoff ratio was appeared in the order of Dan Yang, Chung Ju, and Yeo Ju are located at upper, middle and lower portion of Nam Han rivet basin, respectively. 4.It was assumed that in general the more it rains, the lesser becomes the ratio of loss rainfall. Especially, the ratio of loss rainfall for Dan Yang, upper portion of river basin was shown as the lowest among three watersheds. Besides, the magnitude of that was appeared in the order of Chung Ju and Yeo Ju watershed located at middle, and lower part of river basin, respectively. 5.Relative and standard errors of runoff ratio calculated by empirical formulas were shown to be within ten percent to the observed runoff ratio in all watersheds. 6.It is urgently essential that the effect of antecedent rainfall have an influence on the next coming flood should be studied in near future.

  • Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been used to estimate potential long-term soil erosion in the fields. However, the USLE does not estimate sediment yield due to lack of module considering sediment delivery ratio (SDR) for watershed application. For that reason, the Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) system was developed and applied to compute the sediment yield at watershed scale. However, the R factor of current SATEEC Ver. 2.1 was estimated based on 5-day antecedent rainfall, it is not related with fundamental concept of R factor. To compute R factor accurately, the energy of rainfall strikes should be considered. In this study, the R module in the SATEEC system was enhanced using formulas of Williams, Foster, Cooley, CREAMS which could consider the energy of rainfall strikes. The enhanced SATEEC system ver. 2.2 was applied to the Imha watershed and monthly sediment yield was estimated. As a result of this study, the $R^2$ and NSE values are 0.591 and 0.573 for calibration period, and 0.927 and 0.911 for validation period, respectively. The results demonstrate the enhanced SATEEC System estimates the sediment yield suitably, and it could be used to establish the detailed environmental policy standard using USLE input dataset at watershed scale.
