A new algorithm for satellite microwave rainfall retrievals over the land of Taiwan using TMI (TRMM Microwave Imager) data on board TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) satellite is described in this study. The scattering index method (Grody, 1991) was accepted to develop a rainfall estimation algorithm and the measurements from Automatic Rainfall and Meteorological Telemetry System (ARMTS) were employed to evaluate the satellite rainfall retrievals. Based on the standard products of 2A25 derived from TRMM/PR data, the rainfall areas over Taiwan were divided into convective rainfall area and stratiform rainfall areas with/without bright band. The results of rainfall estimation from the division of rain type are compared with those without the division of rain type. It is shown that the mean rainfall difference for the convective rain type is reduced from -6.2mm/hr to 1.7mm/hr and for the stratiform rain type with bright band is decreased from 10.7 mm/hr to 2.1mm/hr. But it seems not significant improvement for the stratiform rain type without bright band.

Generally speaking, agriculture exist in a climatic environment of uncertainty. Namely, normal rainfall value, as given by the mean values, does not exist. Thought on exists, itl does not affect like extreme Precipitation value on the part of agriculture and of others. Therefore, it is important that we measure the duration and severity index of drought caused by extreme precipitation deficit. In this purpose, this study was dealt with the calculation of drought duration and severity indexs by the method of monthly weighting coefficient. There is no quantitive definition of drought that is universally acceptable. Most of the criteria was used to identify drought have been arbitrary because a drought is a 'non-event' as opposed to a distinct event such as a flood. Therefore, confusion arises when an attempt is made to define the drought phenomenon, the calculation of duration, drought index is based on the following four fundamental question, and this study was dealt with the answers of these four questions as they related to this analytical method, as follows. First, the primary interest in this study is to be the lack of precipitation as it relates to agricultural effective rainfall. Second, the time interval was used to be month in this analysis. Third, Drought event, distinguished analytically from other event, is noted by monthly weighting coefficient method based on monthly rainfall data. Fin-ally, the seven regions used in this study have continually affected by drought on account of their rainfall deficit. The result from this method was very similar to the previous papers studied by many workers. Therefore, I think that this method is very available in Korea to identify the duration of drought, the deficit of precipitation and severity index of drought, But according to the climate of Korea exist the Asia Monsoon zone. The monthly weighting coefficient is modify a little, Because get out of 0.1-0.4 occasionally.

In order to analysis of the water pollution of the Anyang stream(one of the biggest branch streams of the Han River) and its main tributaries, the geological and topographical and rainfall features in its basin were investigated. To do this, the water samples were collected 23 points of the upper, mid and down of Anyang stream and its tributaries and were analyzed based on the chemical methods, Korean Biotic Index(KBI) and Saprobien systems. The Anyang stream basin has a characteristic of topographical torrential heavy rainfall like a typical rainfall feature in Korea. The concentration and the outflow rate of rainfall is very different in seasonal, and water pollution in dry season is especially severe. After 1997, although the water quality status of stream has been improved gradually, the concentration of T-N and SS at the upstream is increased due to the deficiency of facility used for collecting wastewater released from industrial factories, livestock farms and residential areas. The mainstream of the Anyang stream is classified into the 5th grade water as polysaprobic water area according to Saprobien system and the biotic index is over 2.5 in overall. Most of tributaries have 1~3 grade water limit with ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic except the upper and mid streams of Samsung tributary, in which pollution status is the lowest part. Though Sambong tributary is ${\alpha}$-mesosaproboic, biotic index is low because of the appearance of abundant benthos animals in farming and fishing villages.
The purpose of this study is to examine the methods of estimation, comparing U.S. SCS method and $\Phi$-index with effective rainfall. And also comparision was made among SCS method, Chow method and Mockus method as to the peak discharge of design storm hydrograph by small river basin. Hydrological data of the Shin river basin which was used in this study and the results of study are as follow; 1) As a result of applying the SCS method to determine the effective rainfall out of total rainfall, it turned out that the everage CN of the basin as obtained by the analysis of hydrologic soil-cover complex was varied as follows; AMC-I was 27.9%, AMC-II 16.4%, AMC-III 8.1% less than the value given by SC method using discharge measurement. 2) The comparision of effective rainfall by the ungaged SCS method with that of gauged $\Phi$-index method showed that the $\Phi$-index method showed that the $\Phi$-index method gives large value by 4.7% to those given by hydrograph. The result of analysis by the SCS method resulted in great difference from discharge measurement. 3) The comparision of SCS method, Chow method, and Mockus method showed that dimensionless hydrograph of SCS method and Chow method were close to the peak discharge of the gauged unit hydrograph, while the other methods gave far different results. 4) Attempts were made, for a better adaptation to the Shin river basin, to introduce lag time formula constant of dimensionless hydrograph of the SCS method by using the peak discharge of the gauged flow hydrograph.
This study was to investigate characteristics of Seoho watershed in Suwon city. $BOD_5$ and SS were selected due to the one of the important factors of the water qualities. Monitoring was conducted monthly for four years during the non-rainfall time. Also, we have been monitored $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, TN and TP with two times sampling after the rainfalls. The highest concentrations of $BOD_5$ and SS were observed in downstream compare with upstream and midstream during the non-rainfall time. No change was observed in $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ during the non-rainfall time and after the rainfalls. The monitoring result indicated that the concentration of SS was the highest in downstream after the rainfalls. We have collected the samples two times after the rainfalls. The rainfall intensity in first sampling was two times higher than second sampling. TN and TP concentrations were increased with increasing the rainfall intensity at all stream. The ESB (Ecological Score of Benthic macroinverterbrate community) index was used to evaluate the statement of stream. ESB results were identified that the upstream is protected waters and the down and midstream is reformed waters. EBS analysis results indicated that the Seoho watershed was ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic at all stream.

In this study, following works have been carried out : division of Nakdong River Basin into 25 sub basins, development of a technique to evaluate spatial distribution of rainfall and analysis of rainfall data of 169 stations, selection of control points, and selection of a hydrologic model(SSARR). The runoff analysis showed that the surface-subsurface separation and soil moisture index parameters are the most important two to the simulation result.

This study was to introduced estimation model for optimum probabilistic rainfall intensity on hydrological area. Originally, probabilistic rainfall intensity formula have been characterized different coefficient of formula and model following watersheds. But recently in korea rainfall intensity formula does not use unionize applyment standard between administration and district. And mingle use planning formula with not assumption model. Following the number of year hydrological duration adjust areal index. But, with adjusting formula applyment was without systematic conduct. This study perceive the point as following : 1) Use method of excess probability of Iwai to calculate survey rainfall intensity value. 2) And, use method of least squares to calculate areal coefficient for a unit of 157 rain gauge station. And, use areal coefficient was introduced new probabilistic rainfall intensity formula for each rain gauge station. 3) And, use new probabilistic rainfall intensity formula to adjust a unit of fourteen duration-a unit of fifteen year probabilistic rainfall intensity. 4) The above survey value compared with adjustment value. And use three theory of error(absolute mean error, squares mean error, relative error ratio) to choice optimum probabilistic rainfall intensity formula for a unit of 157 rain gauge station.

Various techniques for bias correction and statistical downscaling have been developed to overcome the limitations related to the spatial and temporal resolution and error of climate change scenario data required in various applied research fields including agriculture and water resources. In this study, the characteristics of three different statistical dowscaling methods (i.e., SQM, SDQDM, and BCSA) provided by AIMS were summarized, and climate change scenarios produced by applying each method were comparatively evaluated. In order to compare the average rainfall characteristics of the past period, an index representing the average rainfall characteristics was used, and the reproducibility of extreme weather conditions was evaluated through the abnormal climate-related index. The reproducibility comparison of spatial distribution and variability was compared through variogram and pattern identification of spatial distribution using the average value of the index of the past period. For temporal reproducibility comparison, the raw data and each detailing technique were compared using the transition probability. The results of the study are presented by quantitatively evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each method. Through comparison of statistical techniques, we expect that the strengths and weaknesses of each detailing technique can be represented, and the most appropriate statistical detailing technique can be advised for the relevant research.

GIS (Geographic Information System) is very useful in describing basin wide geographic characteristics and hydrologic analysis. This study estimated long term hydrologic variations in the Geum river basin using the SSARR rainfall runoff simulation model to provide reliable hydrologic information associated with rainfall runoff management module. Calibrated various hydrologic information such as soil moisture index, water use, direct and base flow are generated using GIS tools to display spatial hydrologic information in the unit of subbasin of target watershed. In addition, the graphic user interface toolkit designed for data compilation is expected to support efficient basin wide rainfall runoff analysis.
This study proposes a modified standardized precipitation index (MSPI) which was developed to make up for the weakness of the SPI. Both MSPI and SPI are applied to the monthly rainfall at the Seoul station for the drought analysis. The MSPI proposed is nothing but the SPI for the normalized monthly rainfall, that is, an extra step for normalizing the monthly rainfall is included before driving the SPI. Thus, the MSPI has a structure to transfer the relative amount of rainfall to the next months, but the SPI the absolute amount of rainfall. The monthly rainfall data at the Seoul station used in this study are those collected from 1777 to 1996. The rainfall data collected before and after the long dry period around 1900 were also analyzed separately for the comparison. The results derived are as follows. (1) The MSPI was found to be more practical compared to the SPI. This was assured by comparing the analysis results of the data including and excluding the long dry period around 1900. (2) The MSPI is found to be less sensitive than the SPI to the extreme rainfall events. For the MSPI, the occurrence probabilities of moderate drought before and after the long dry period are similar, but those for the extreme drought becomes slightly decreased after the long dry period (from about 18 years of return period before the long dry period to the 16 years after the long dry period). However, the duration becomes longer after the long dry period (the duration for the extreme drought has been increased from 2 to 2.5 months after the long dry period). This results can also be compared with a rather unreasonable result derived by applying the SPI (for the extreme drought the return period has been decreased to be from 25 to 10 years after the long dry period, on the other hand the duration has been increased from 1.5 months to 3.5 months). So, we man conclude that the MSPI is more practical for the drought analysis that the SPI.
