In Korea, the pilot construction of the first high-speed railroad on the Seoul-Pusan has already started 2 years ago. In the thesis, an attempt is made to develop reliability-based integrity-assessment models for the computer-aided control and maintenance of high-speed railroad bridges. The strength limit state models for PC railroad bridges encompass the bending and shear strengths as well as the strength interaction equations which simultaneously take into the element and system reliablities of the proposed limit states and reliability models. Then, the actual load carrying capacity and the realistic safety of bridges are evaluated using the system reliability-based equivalent strength, and the results are compared with those of the element reliability-based or conventional methods. Various parametric studies are performed for the proposed reliability-based safety and integrity-assessment models using the actual PC box girder bridges used in the pilot construction. And the sensitivity analyses are performed for the basic random variables included in strength limit state models. It is concluded that proposed models may be practically applied for the rational assessment of safety and integrity of high speed railroad bridges.
This paper investigates the ground vibration induced by high-speed trains moving on multi-span continuous bridges. The dynamic impact factor of multi-span continuous bridges under trainloads was first determined in the parametric study, which shows that the dynamic impact factor will be large when the first bridge vertical natural frequency is equal to the trainload dominant frequencies, nV/D, where n is a positive integer, V is the train speed, and D is the train carriage interval. In addition, more continuous spans will produce smaller dynamic impact factors at this resonance condition. Based on the results of three-dimensional finite element analyses using the soil-structure interaction for realistic high-speed railway bridges, we suggest that the bridge span be set at 1.4 to 1.5 times the carriage interval for simply supported bridges. If not, the use of four or more-than-four-span continuous bridges is suggested to reduce the train-induced vibration. This study also indicates that the vibration in the train is major generated from the rail irregularities and that from the bridge deformation is not dominant.
CWR (continuous welded rail) tracks on high-speed railway bridges have much more complicated axial force distributions caused by track-bridge interaction than those behaviors on embankments, and additional problems caused by track-structure interaction with the axial force of the CWR. In order to analyze and limit other physical phenomena caused by track-bridge interaction, a design guideline (KR C-08080, longitudinal track-bridge interaction analysis) is used when designing CWR track on bridges. Domestic analysis and design methods for track-bridge interaction follow the UIC 774-3R, and they suggest conservative methods and deterministic properties. Recently, many studies analyzing the methods of track-bridge interaction considering the loading history are being carried out; however, there has been insufficient studies of the variation of the resistance properties with a consideration of the actual loading history. In this study, the performances of rail fastening systems used for concrete track on bridges were tested and analyzed while considering the loading history. For this purpose, longitudinal and vertical loading combinations, applied in order to simulate the practical conditions and resistance characteristics (stiffness and elastic limit displacement), are analyzed through the experimental results. Also, a comparison study was conducted with the properties in the KR Code.
Recently, the railroad route plan is trying to minimize the damage of the local resident which is caused by railroad construction. For this reason, reducing the banking height of soil roadbed, lowering the bridge girder height of a solid intersection and a part of cross river, the through bridge type which can achieve a required span length must apply. The representative through bridges of railroad are arch bridges, truss bridges and plate girder bridges, the through plate girder bridge of variable section can apply that the span length of these bridges is about $30{\sim}50m$, namely, middle span length bridge types, and that can satisfy structural capacity and beauty of railroad at the same time. This paper introduces plan and design process of the Su-eo cheon bridge applied by a through plate girder bridge type of the Jinju-Gwangyang double track 6th construction ordered at Korea Rail network Authority in 2005.
To install heavy structures in the railway bridges, crane methods or launching methods using temporary structure have been applied. These methods are uneconomical because working yard is required, temporary cut of rail system, etc. In this study, various construction methods has been developed which are suitable to the filed conditions. In the case of simple span structure like plate girder bridges, the girder is loaded to troy system at the working yard and then transferred to the working place. To lift and lower the girder system, a new transfer system was developed. Different methods each for simple span bridge girder and long span girder were developed and detailed work procedures were proposed. Using these methods, the heavy structures can be installed with simple and safe work procedures and the construction cost and duration can be reduced.
Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutment can cause extreme deformations on track. Especially, since slab track was fixed onto the bridge deck slab on concrete slab track installed bridges, deformations of bridge deck ends directly affect the slab track behavior, and thus these interactions can bring about the premature failure of rail fastenings or other deteriorations to lower the serviceability. In this study, a foreign standard to evaluate forces on track components caused by the track-bridge interactions and the behavior of bridge deck ends was investigated and for real scale bridges. It was found that rail support spring coefficients, as well as toe loads, support spacing were very important parameters.

To absorb the deformation of live load, thermal gradient, shrinkage and creep in bridge structures and general structures, expansion joint has to be established. Especially expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge has to accomodate the static and dynamic forces and it not only has the durability of itself but also maintain the durability of structure by preventing the leakage of water. The actual used product of expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge is only ones made in France, Germany and Japan. In this study, the development process and test results of developed expansion joint are introduced which has the functional operation and durability enough to apply to high-speed railway bridges, roadway bridges and general structures. The tests consist of fatigue-durability test of 3 million times by high-speed rail load, leakage test and jack-up test for verifying the possibility of exchanging it. The performance of developed expansion joint satisfy the specification of Korea High Speed Rail Construction authority.

Ground vibration analysis methods for Light Rail Transit(LRT) on bridges are studied. LRT loads acting on the piers are evaluated considering interactions between trains and a bridge. Two dimensional in-plane and axisymmetric wave propagations are used in ground vibration analyses, and then the results of them are compared one another. A modified axisymmetric method is presented, which can consider the effect of the train loadings on a series of piers as the train moves. Parametric studies are carried out for various train speeds, bridge types and geotechnical conditions to investigate the characteristics of ground vibrations.
Long-span cable-supported bridges are flexible structures vulnerable to unsymmetric loadings such as railway traffic and strong wind. The torsional dynamic response of long-span cable-supported bridges under running trains and/or strong winds may deform the railway track laid on the bridge deck and affect the running safety of trains and the comfort of passengers, and even lead the bridge to collapse. Therefore, it is eager to figure out the torsional dynamic response of long-span cable-supported bridges under running trains and/or strong winds. The Tsing Ma Bridge (TMB) in Hong Kong is a suspension bridge with a main span of 1,377 m, and is currently the world's longest suspension bridge carrying both road and rail traffic. Moreover, this bridge is located in one of the most active typhoon-prone regions in the world. A wind and structural health monitoring system (WASHMS) was installed on the TMB in 1997, and after 17 years of successful operation it is still working well as desired. Making use of one-year monitoring data acquired by the WASHMS, the torsional dynamic responses of the bridge deck under rail traffic and strong winds are analyzed. The monitoring results demonstrate that the differences of vertical displacement at the opposite edges and the corresponding rotations of the bridge deck are less than 60 mm and $0.1^{\circ}$ respectively under weak winds, and less than 300 mm and $0.6^{\circ}$ respectively under typhoons, implying that the torsional dynamic response of the bridge deck under rail traffic and wind loading is not significant due to the rational design.
