In order to clarify the vertical ozone distribution in planetary boundary layer of coastal area with complex terrain, an observation campaign was carried out around Gwangyang Bay with dense pollutant emission sources during two days from June, 4 2007. For this observation are Radiosonde, SODAR(SOnic Detection And Ranging) and Tethered ozone sonde were employed. The surface meteorological and photochemical observation data provided by AWS (Automatic Weather System) and AQMS (Air Quality Monitoring System) were also applied for analysis. Synoptic condition is strongly associated with lower level ozone distribution in complex terrain coastal area. Since mesoscale circulation induced by difference of characteristics of land and sea and orographic forcing is predominant under calm synoptic condition, vertical distribution of ozone is complicate and vertical ozone concentration greatly fluctuated. However in second day when synoptic influence become strong, ozone concentration in lower levels is vertically uniform regardless of observation level. This results in vertical observation indicates that vertical ozone distribution is often determined by synoptic condition and also affects surface ozone concentration.

ZHD (Zenith Hydrostatic Delay) model is important parameter in estimating of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) PWV (Precipitable Water Vapor) along with weighted mean temperature. The ZWD (Zenith Wet Delay) is tend to accumulate the ZHD error, so that biases from ZHD will be affected on the precision of GNSS PWV. In this paper, we compared the accuracy of GNSS PWV with radiosonde PWV using three ZHD models, such as Saastamoinen, Hopfield, and Black. Also, we adopted the KWMT (Korean Weighted Mean Temperature) model and the mean temperature which was observed by radiosonde on the retrieval processing of GNSS PWV. To this end, GNSS observation data during one year were processed to produce PWVs from a total of 5 GNSS permanent stations in Korea, and the GNSS PWVs were compared with radiosonde PWVs for the evaluating of biases. The PWV biases using mean temperature estimated by the KWMT model are smaller than radiosonde mean temperature. Also, we could confirm the result that the Saastamoinen ZHD which is most used in the GNSS meteorology is not valid in South Korea, because it cannot be exclude the possibility of biases by latitude or height of GNSS station.
A statistical correlation between cloud thickness and brightness is shown by regression analysis using the least-square method. Cloud thicknesses are obtained from radiosonde observation. Brightness values are obtained from GMS visible channel. Regression analyses are preformed on both thickness data used in conjunction with brightness data for summer season. The results are shown by the regression curve relating thickness and brightness accounting for 79% of variance. And the relationship between thickness and precipitable water in the cloud layers is analyzed. The thickness shows a positive correlation with precipitable water in cloudy layers.
Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) is a major input parameter for weather forecasting and atmosphere diffusion models. In order to estimate the sub-grid scale variability of PBLH, we need to monitor PBLH data with high spatio-temporal resolution. Accordingly, we introduce a LIdar observation VEhicle (LIVE), and analyze PBLH derived from the lidar loaded in LIVE. PBLH estimated from LIVE shows high correlations with those estimated from both WRF model ($R^2=0.68$) and radiosonde ($R^2=0.72$). However, PBLH from lidar tend to be overestimated in comparison with those from both WRF and radiosonde because lidar appears to detect height of Residual Layer (RL) as PBLH which is overall below near the overlap height (< 300 m). PBLH from lidar with 10 min time resolution shows typical diurnal variation since it grows up after sunrise and reaches the maximum after 2 hours of sun culmination. The average growth rate of PBLH during the analysis period (2014/06/26 ~ 30) is 1.79 (-2.9 ~ 5.7) m $min^{-1}$. In addition, the lidar signal measured from moving LIVE shows that there is very low noise in comparison with that from the stationary observation. The PBLH from LIVE is 1065 m, similar to the value (1150 m) derived from the radiosonde launched at Sokcho. This study suggests that LIVE can observe continuous and reliable PBLH with high resolution in both stationary and mobile systems.

Water vapor is an important parameter in monitoring changes in the Earth's climate and it can be used to improve weather forecasting. However, it haven't observed accurately by reasons of structural and economic problem of observation. GPS meteorology technique for precipitable water vapor measurement is currently actively being researched an advanced nation. Main issue of GPS meteorology is an accuracy of PWV measurement related weighted mean temperature and meteorological data. In this study, the korean weighted mean temperature had been recalculated by a linear regression method based on meteorological observations from 6 radiosonde stations for 2003 year. We examined the accuracy of PWV estimates from GPS observations and Radiosonde observations by new korean weighted mean temperature and others.

The GPS radiosonde is designed to conduct a full synoptic sounding to balloon burst using data generated from precision meteorological sensors and the GPS satellite network. The GPS radiosonde include proven, accurate temperature, humidity and capacitance aneroid pressure sensors. The atmospheric boundary layer was intensively observed in three islands of the west sea from 18 LST on March 9, 2016 to 06 LST on March 12, 2016. We investigated the restriction of nocturnal stable layer and rather the development of the mixed layer at night. On March 9, nocturnal mixed layer was developed by buoyancy heat flux. On the other hand, on March 10, the shear production was higher especially at 21 LST when the mixed layer height was the highest during the intensive observation period. The wind shear and the surface heat flux which produce the turbulent kinetic energy played an important role to grow the mixed layer even at night.

Comprehensive observations of the Euler method and the Lagrangian method were performed in order to obtain high-resolution observation data in space and time for the complex environment of new city. The two radiosondes, which measure meteorological parameters using Lagrangian methods, produced air pressure, wind speed and wind direction. They were generally consistent with each other even if the observation points or times were different. The temperature measured by the sensor exposed to the air during the day was relatively high as the altitude increased due to the influence of solar radiation. The temporal difference in wind direction and speed was found in the comparison of Euler's wind profiler data with radiosonde data. When the wind field is horizontally in homogeneous, this result implies the need to consider the advection component to compare the data of the two observation methods. In this study, a method of using observation data at different times for each altitude section depending on the observation period of the Euler method is proposed to effectively compare the data of the two observation methods.
In this study the GPS Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) was derived and evaluated by a radiosode measure during the winter intensive observation in Gangneung site from January 5 till February 29 in 2012. Bernise 5.0 software was used to derive the GPS data. GPS-derived PWV from Zero difference (GANG) and Single difference (GANG and DAEJ) was high variance in time and about 5 times the PWV of radiosonde. GPS post-processing has been performed from two additional IGS site (Xian Dao, Ibaraki-ken) in order to correct the absolute troposphere errors. As a result, the mean bias error (MBE) and root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation compared with radiosonde measure were 0.67 mm, 6.40 mm, and 0.93, respectively. In order to correct the relative troposphere errors from the altitudinal difference between the two GPS receivers, we calculated the GPS-derived PWV by adding the data of GPS that was installed in Gangneung-Wonju University near the Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration. In the end, the improved result showed that MBE, RMSE and correlation in comparison with radiosonde measures were 0.61 mm, 5.79 mm, and 0.93, respectively.
Heavy rainfall ($>30mm\;hr^{-1}$) over the Korean Peninsula is examined in order to understand thermo-dynamic characteristics of the atmosphere, using radiosonde observational data from seven upper-air observation stations during the last 17 years (1997~2013). A total of 82 heavy rainfall cases during the summer season (June-August) were selected for this study. The average values of thermo-dynamic indices of heavy rainfall events are Total Precipitable Water (TPW) = 60 mm, Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) = $850J\;kg^{-1}$, Convective Inhibition (CIN) = $15J\;kg^{-1}$, Storm Relative Helicity (SRH) = $160m^2s^{-2}$, and 0~3 km bulk wind shear = $5s^{-1}$. About 34% of the cases were associated with a Changma front; this pattern is more significant than other synoptic pressure patterns such as troughs (22%), migratory cyclones (15%), edges of high-pressure (12%), typhoons (11%), and low-pressure originating from Changma fronts (6%). The spatial distribution of thermo-dynamic conditions (CAPE and SRH) is similar to the range of thunderstorms over the United States, but extreme conditions (supercell thunderstorms and tornadoes) did not appear in the Korean Peninsula. Synoptic conditions, vertical buoyancy (CAPE, CIN), and wind parameters (SRH, shear) are shown to discriminate among the environments of the three types. The first type occurred with high CAPE and low wind shear by the edge of the high pressure pattern, but Second type is related to Changma front and typhoon, exhibiting low CAPE and high wind shear. The last type exhibited characteristics intermediate between the first and second types, such as moderate CAPE and wind shear near the migratory cyclone and trough.
This paper describes methodology verifying near-surface predictability of numerical weather prediction models against the surface synoptic weather station network (SYNOP) observation. As verification variables, temperature, wind, humidity-related variables, total cloud cover, and surface pressure are included in this tool. Quality controlled SYNOP observation through the pre-processing for data assimilation is used. To consider the difference of topographic height between observation and model grid points, vertical inter/extrapolation is applied for temperature, humidity, and surface pressure verification. This verification algorithm is applied for verifying medium-range forecasts by a global forecasting model developed by Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems to measure the near-surface predictability of the model and to evaluate the capability of the developed verification tool. It is found that the verification of near-surface prediction against SYNOP observation shows consistency with verification of upper atmosphere against global radiosonde observation, suggesting reliability of those data and demonstrating importance of verification against in-situ measurement as well. Although verifying modeled total cloud cover with observation might have limitation due to the different definition between the model and observation, it is also capable to diagnose the relative bias of model predictability such as a regional reliability and diurnal evolution of the bias.
