Ocean surface wind speed was estimated using TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission) TMI (TRMM Microwave/Imager) data. It is used the TRMM TMI brightness temperature and National Data Buoy Center's buoy winds speed dataset near North-America to estimate by the algorithm of the ocean surface wind speed retrieval over North America. Comparing with the buoy data by D-matrix equation, the result that RMSE, BIAS, and correlation coefficient are 2.19 $ms^{-1}$, 1.10 $ms^{-1}$, and 0.81, respectively. Therefore the estimated oceanic surface wind speed by TRMM TMI brightness temperature data show that available to ocean research over upper ocean.
A solar concentrator, named KIERDISH II, was built at KIER in order to investigate the feasibility of high temperature solar energy application system. The constructed concentrator is a dish type solar concentrator with a focal length of 4.68m and a diameter of 7.9m. To successfully operate KIERDISH II, optimal design of the absorber is very important and flux density distribution has to be known. The focal flux density distribution on the receiver was measured. We have observed the shape and size of flux images and evaluated percent power within radius. Flux density distribution is usually measured by a CCD(charge coupled device) camera and a radiometer. In this paper we present a flux mapping method to estimate the characteristic features of the flux density distribution in the focal region of solar concentrator. The minimum radius of receiver is found to be 0.15m and approximately 90% of the incident radiation is intercepted by receiver aperture.
Daegu Solar Power Tower Plant of 200 kW thermal capacity was developed for the first time in Korea, 2011. Measurement of the heat flux distribution is essential to evaluate the solar energy concentrated by reflectors and to design a suitable receiver. The flux mapping technique, which uses a radiometer and a diffuse plate, is common for measurement of the heat flux distribution. Because the solar power tower plant has a wide concentration area, the flux mapping technique using a fixed diffuse plate is difficult to apply. Therefore, the flux distribution in the solar power tower plant should be measured by the flux mapping technique using a small moving bar. In this study, we measured flux distributions with the moving-bar system developed at the KIER solar furnace and evaluated its applicability for the solar power tower plant.
Theoretical models of radiative transfer are developed to simulate the 85 GHz brightness temperature (T85) observed by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) radiometer as a function of rain rate. These simulations are performed separately over regions of the convective and stratiform rain. TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) observations are utilized to construct vertical profiles of hydrometeors in the regions. For a given rain rate, the extinction in 85 GHz due to hydrometeors above the freezing level is found to be relatively weak in the convective regions compared to that in the stratiform. The hydrometeor profile above the freezing level responsible for the weak extinction in convective regions is inferred from theoretical considerations to contain two layers: 1) a mixed (or mixed-phase) layer of 2 km thickness with mixed-phase particles, liquid drops and graupel above the freezing level, and 2) a layer of graupel extending from the top of the mixed layer to the cloud top. Strong extinction in the stratiform regions is inferred to result from slowly-falling, low-density ice aggregates (snow) above the freezing level. These theoretical results are consistent with the T85 measured by TMI, and with the rain rate deduced from PR for the convective and stratiform rain regions. On the basis of this study, the accuracy of the rain rate sensed by TMI is inferred to depend critically on the specification of the convective or stratiform nature of the rain.
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of wavelength and intensity of light curing units on the curing of composite resin. The wavelength and intensity of nine units were evaluated with Optical Multichannel Analyzer and Radiometer. Two-part split stainless steel mold with a cylindrical hole-3.0mm in diameter, 6.0mm in hgieht-was prepared. After placing a Mylar strip between two parts, 100 specimens were made by inserting each of four composite resins into the mold and irradiating for 20 seconds with five light units alternatively. The curing depths were measured by scraping method and evaluated by two-way ANOVA. And Vicker's hardness measurements were made on the longitudinally sectioned surface at 0.5mm interval. The results were as follows: 1. Visilux 2 showed a narrow spectral band within the effective wavelength in initiating polymerization and the highest intensity. Translux showed the diffuse spectrum of wavelength and the lower light intensity. 2. Visilux 2 showed the highest curing effect in any composite resin and then followed by Optilux, Efos 35, Heliomat and Translux. (p < 0.01) 3. Durafill showed the deepest curing depth in any light unit and then followed by Bisfil M, Silux and Heliosit. (p < 0.01). 4. Maximum hardness values showed 0.1mm and 0.5mm under top surface and then gradually decreased with depth.

A new technique, namely the combination of satellite and trajectory analysis (CSTA), for exploring the spatio-temporal distribution information of volcanic ash plume (VAP) from volcanic eruption. CSTA uses the satellite derived ash property data and a matching forward-trajectories, which can generate airmass history pattern for specific VAP. In detail, VAP properties such as ash mask, aerosol optical thickness at 11 ${\mu}m$ ($AOT_{11}$), ash layer height, and effective radius from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) satellite were retrieved, and used to estimate the possibility of the ash forecasting in local atmosphere near volcano. The use of CSTA for Iceland's Eyjafjallaj$\ddot{o}$kull volcano erupted in May 2010 reveals remarkable spatial coherence for some VAP source-transport pattern. The CSTA forecasted points of VAP are consistent with the area of MODIS retrieved VAP. The success rate of the 24 hour VAP forecast result was about 77.8% in this study. Finally, the use of CSTA could provide promising results for VAP monitoring and forecasting by satellite observation data and verification with long term measurement dataset.

In this paper we present an adaptive method for accelerating conventional Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) for restoration of Passive Millimeter-Wave (PMMW) image from its blurred and noisy version. MEM is nonlinear and its convergence is very slow. We present a new method to accelerate the MEM by using an exponent on the correction ratio. In this method the exponent is computed adaptively in each iteration, using first-order derivatives of deblurred image in previous two iterations. Using this exponent the accelerated MEM emphasizes speed at the beginning stages and stability at later stages. In accelerated MEM the non-negativity is automatically ensured and also conservation of flux without additional computation. Simulation study shows that the accelerated MEM gives better results in terms of RMSE, SNR, moreover, it takes only about 46% lesser iterations than conventional MEM. This is also confirmed by applying this algorithm on actual PMMW image captured by 94 GHz mechanically scanned radiometer.

Latent and sensible heat fluxes over the global oceans are estimated using SSM/I (Special Sensor Microwave Imager) and AVHRR MCSST (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature). The heat fluxes are computed from SSM/I wind speeds and surface humidity, the MCSST, and NCEP Reanalysis sea level pressures and 2-m temperatures from 1996 to 1997. The diabatic conditions bulk formula (Kondo, 1975) is used to compute the heat fluxes. To validate, the derived fluxes are compared to the measurements of 3 JMA buoys. The wind speeds and surface humidity derived from SSM/I have accuracies of 1.37m/s and 1.7g/kg, respectively. The heat fluxes were estimated these factors and the standard error of the latent and sensible heat fluxes are 5.53 W/m$^2$ and 3.33 W/m$^2$. The latest El-Nino phenomenon started at the beginning of 1997 and this event was larger than any others. We compare the heat fluxes in 1997 with the fluxes in 1996 and investigate the spatial movement of meteorological factors as well as the heat fluxes associated with El-Nino appearance.
Cloudsat satellite data is sensitive to snowfall and collected during each month beginning with Dec 2007 and ending Feb 2008. In this study, we attempt to develop a snowfall retrieval algorithm using a combination of radiometer and cloud radar data. We trained data from the relation between brightness temperature measurements from NOAA's Advanced Microwave Sounder Unit-B(AMSU-B) and the radar reflectivity of the 2B-GEOPROF product from W-band(94 GHz) cloud radar onboard Cloudsat and applied it to the Korea peninsula. We use a principal components analysis to quantify the variations that are the result of the radiometric signatures of snowfall from those of the surface. Finally, we quantify the correlation between the higher principal component (orthogonal to surface variability) of the microwave radiances and the precipitation-sensitive CloudSat radar reflectivities. This work summarizes the results of applying this approach to observations over the East Sea during Feb. 2008. The retrieved data show reasonable estimation for snowfall rate compared with Cloudsat vertical image.
Concentration characteristics of the KIER solar furnace are analyzed with a heat flux measurement technique. Total heat capacity of 40kW was confirmed within 1.04% average error, and the normalized maximum heat flux of 3,452 $kW/m^2$ was proved. Non-Gaussian flux distribution in the vertical direction implies that reflectors should not be random rather inclined downwards. Moreover, we characterized flux distribution variations with furnace blind opening ratio, distance from the focal plane, and misalignment of the measurement system. Based on the results, the heat flux distribution can be simply estimated once reflectivity and direct normal insolation values are known. This study will be helpful to the design and the performance evaluation of receivers or chemical reactors.
