A Study on Comparing Characteristics of Philippe Starck's furniture design with Ron Arad's (필립 스탁과 론 아라드의 가구디자인 특성 비교 연구)

  • Design took a radical turn in the 1980's, deconstructing the rigid ideology of the Modernism, often with great humor. Contemporary representable Avant-garde designers, Philippe Starck and Ron Arad brazenly borrowed from the 'historical elements' of previous styles and created bio-morphic forms with whimsical names of furniture. This study is proposed to understand the diversity of contemporary design, by comparing these two furniture designers. It also covers the common factors in contemporary furniture design, and analyzes their individual differences and similarities in design. It helps to plan the foundation of design methods for 21C, and predict and respond to the future as a reference point. Philippe Starck links Romantic Rationalism within Minimal style and Ron Arad links Deconstructivism within High-tech style but both of them pursue of Organic concept design in their furniture through the concept of humanism. They are able to establish a base of contemporary furniture design by adapting new conceptual form, and design process for the general public.

Surface Properties of Epoxy Composites by Plasma Treatment (플라즈마처리에 따른 에폭시 복합재료의 표면특성)

  • In this study performed to identify a degradation mechanism in macromolecular insulating material, the contact angel, surface potential decay, surface resistivity, and XPS analysis were compared after exposure of FRP laminate to plasma discharge. In the case of contact angle, the surface of specimen untreated showed weak hydrophobic property of 73。. However, the contact angle was decreased to 20。in the plasma-treated specimen. In the case of chemical changes arising form plasma treatment, carboxl radicals were generated mainly in the surface treated, which was rapidly changed to the hydrophilic one. In the corona potential decay study to determine the electrical changes of the surface, positive charges were rapidly decreased when compared with negative charges, leading to negative property in the surface of specimen not treated. However, in the case of the hydrophilic surface, lots of carboxl radicals acting as positive polarity were generated, resulting in positive surface. Owing to such positive surface, charges of negative polarity applied were rapidly decreased.

  • Highly temperature stable mesoporous materials have excellent properties and potential applications. Here we show a novel poly(vinyl)silazane-block-polystyrene diblock copolymer, which was synthesized by controlled/living free radical polymerization with reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) route. The obtained diblock copolymer occurs the phaseseparation on the nanoscale to form ordered nanostructure, which is converted to mesoprorous ceramic after heating at 800oC. This route demonstrates the preparation of highly temperature stable mesoporous silicon carbon nitrides (SiCN) ceramic film directed from highly cross-linking poly(vinyl)silazane blocks with high ceramic yield, which is different from previous pathway.

  • After a digital modelling method has been introduced into architectural design in 1990s, a radical change was taken place in generating architectural form and space. Many architects have a view that digital modelling method is the most Important invention in the visual presentation since the moment that architect Philippo Brunelleschi experimented initially the linear perspective. Therefore, in this study, comparing between perspectiva artificialis and digital modelling method, we clarify 1) the relationship of architectural design and presentation method, 2) the practical and philosophical background inherent in digital modelling method which played key role in developing non-representational architecture, 3) and the principles of non-representational architecture like diagram, folding, and trace.

Lipid Peroxidation and Its Toxicological Implications

  • Lipid peroxidation is a free radical oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid or arachidonic acid. This process has been related with various pathologies and disease status mainly because of the oxidation products formed during the process. The oxidation products include reactive aldehydes such as malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynonenal. These reactive aldehydes can form adducts with DNAs and proteins, leading to the alterations in their functions to cause various diseases. This review will provide a short summary on the implication of lipid peroxidation on cancer, atherosclerosis, and neurodegeneration as well as chemical and biochemical mechanisms by which these adducts affect the pathological conditions. In addition, select examples will be presented where antioxidants were used to counteract oxidative damage caused by lipid peroxidation. At the end, isoprostanes are discussed as a gold standard for the assessment of oxidative damages.

A Study on the Architectural Manifesto and Design Works Characteristics of Walter Gropius (월터 그로피우스의 건축선언과 작품특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the architectural manifesto and design works characteristics of Walter Gropius. He was the director of Weimar Bauhaus that one of the advanced artificial movements in the early modern period. The almost of the early modern movements was related to the radical ideology and the manifesto. Especially Bauhaus originated from manifesto of artists teaching group with architect Walter Gropius. Therefore, the category of the study pitch upon Bauhaus architectural manifesto - Bauhaus Manifesto and Programme(1919) - and the representative works of Walter Gropius - Fagus Factory(1911-14), Dessau Bauhaus Building(1925-26), Siedlung Berlin-Siemensstadt(1929-30) and Harvard Graduate Center(1949). The conclusions of the study as per the above mentioned pill pose are the dynamic integration by non-symmetry in cubic form (formal characteristics) and organic continuity by reciprocality in transparent space (spatial characteristics).

  • In the oligomerization of p-aminophenol by the catalytic action of Fe-EDTA complex in the aqueous medium, the mixed complex intermediate, Fe-EDTA-M type, is considered to be formed, from which active radicals of the monomer are produced. In this system, polymerization is presumed to proceed as follows: Free radical formation ${\to}$ Coupling ${\to}$ Activation ${\to}$ Coupling, and so on. In this study, the form of the monomer and coordination state in the mixed complex, the catalytic action of Fe-EDTA the complex, the reaction mechanism, and the structure of the oligomers are discussed.

COLLAPSE CHARACTERISTICS OF ALUMINUM EXTRUSIONS FILLED WITH STRUCTURAL FOAM FOR SPACE FRAME VEHICLES

  • For improving high-safety, convenience, and ride comfort, the automotive design suffers from radical increase of the weight, the recycling-related rules, regulations on the waste gas, and environmental protection of the resources. Among them, it is well known that the weight increase is the most critical. Thus, in order to minimize the weight of the body-in-white that takes up 20-30% of the whole weight of the automobile, most automotive manufacturers have attempted to develop the aluminum intensive body-in-white using aluminum space frames. In this research, the crush test and simulation for aluminum extrusions are performed to evaluate the collapse characteristics of that light weighted material. Also. the same test and simulation was done for aluminum extrusions filled with structural foam. Then, these results are analyzed and compared. From these studies, the effectiveness of structural foam is evaluated in improving automotive crashworthiness. Finally, the design strategy and guideline of the structural form are suggested in order to improve the crashworthiness for aluminum space frame in the vehicle.

  • The types of the products of the reactions between RuH(NO)(Cyttp) and alkynes are sensitive to the nature of alkynes. Terminal, nonactivated alkynes (HC${\equiv}$CR, R=Ph, hexyl and $CH_2OH)$ produce acetylide complexes and terminal (HC${\equiv}$CR, R=C(O)Me, COOEt) or internal activated ones (RC${\equiv}$ CR, R=COOMe) lead to form alkenyl complexes. On the other hand, internal nonactivated alkynes (RC${\equiv}$CR, R=Ph) do not show reactivity toward RuH(NO)(Cyttp). These products can be rationalized by the cis-concerted mechanism but the radical pathway appears to work in the reaction of propargyl chloride. From the spectroscopic data, the trigonal bipyramidal structure with a linear NO group is proposed for these products.

Theoretical Studies on the Gas-Phase Wittig-Oxy-Cope Rearrangement of Deprotonated Diallyl Ether

  • The Wittig-oxy-Cope rearrangements of deprotonated diallyl ether, I, $CH_2={\bar{C}}H-CH-O-CH_2-CH=CH_2$, have been investigated theoretically by the AM1 method. A two step mechanism forming a Wittig product ion, II, $(CH_2=CH)$ $(CH_2=CH-CH_2)$ $CHO^-$, through a radical-pair intermediate was found to provide the most favored reaction pathway in the Wittig rearrangement. The subsequent oxy-Cope rearrangement from species II also involves a two step mechanism through a biradicaloid intermediate. The intramolecular proton transfer in I (to form $CH_2=CH-CH_2-O-{\bar{C}}H-CH=CH_2$) is a higher activation energy barrier process compared to the Wittig and oxy-Cope rearrangements and is considered to be insignificant. These results are in good agreement with the condensed-phase as well as gas-phase experimental results.
