  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the use of Korean medicine for treating radial nerve palsy. Methods : We searched for studies on the use of Korean medicine for the treatment of radial nerve palsy in 7 electronic databases and analyzed these studies. Results : We found 95 studies on radial nerve palsy from 7 electronic databases. We excluded 77 duplicate studies, 1 review article and 2 studies published before 2000. As a result, 15 case studies(36 patients) were included. Acupuncture(15 times), electroacupuncture(6 times), pharmacopuncture(9 times), herbal medicine(11 times), physical therapy(10 times), moxibustion(3 times), cupping therapy(1 time), chuna manual therapy(1 time) and yinyang balancing appliance(1 time) were used. LI11 for acupuncture, LI4, LI11 for electroacupuncture, bee venom as pharmacopuncture material and LI4, LI10, LI11 in pharmacopuncture point, Boik-tang gami as herbal medicine, hot pack for physical therapy, LI4, LI11 for moxibustion were the most frequently used. Conclusions : Korean medicine treatment for radial nerve palsy has been performed in various ways. However, we found limited evidence regarding Korean medicine for radial nerve palsy. Thus, we think various types of studies including more case reports, for radial nerve palsy should be performed in the future.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the patient with radial nerve palsy, who improved by oriental medical treatment. Methods : The patient was managed by bee venom aqua-acupuncture, sclp acupuncture and herbal medicine. We took picture of the patients's wrist and checked the power of muscles. Results : After 4 week treatment, the movement and power of wrist was restored of nearly normal range. also the numbness of hand was removed. Combined oriental medical treatment can treat radial nerve palsy earlier than other methods. Conclusions : The results suggest that combination of bee venom aqua-acupuncture, scalp acupuncture and herbal medicine is good method for treatment of radial nerve palsy. But further studies are required to concretely prove the effectiveness of this methods for treating radial nerve palsy.

  • Radial nerve palsy after surgery of humerus fracture is uncommon complication. Occasionally it needs operative treatment because of difficulty to accurate evaluation. We report this case of radial nerve palsy after surgery of humerus shaft fracture with ultrasound examination. We checked the continuity of radial nerve and radial nerve palsy was complete recovered with conservative treatment.

  • Primary radial nerve palsy occurs in association with approximately 10% of humerus shaft fractures. Secondary radial nerve palsy, which is iatrogenic, occurs in association with approximately 10% to 20% of humerus shaft fractures. Whether the radial nerve palsy is caused primarily by the fracture or secondarily by the surgery, it is necessary to determine whether the radial nerve is being disrupted or compressed by the surrounding structures. This evaluation will dictate whether to await natural recovery or to perform surgical exploration. The current authors report one case of primary radial nerve palsy, due to the humerus fracture, and one case of secondary radial nerve palsy, associated with the osteosynthesis procedure. In both patients, the radial nerve was assessed for anatomical integrity with ultrasonography. Nerve disruption was found in one patient, and a sural nerve graft was performed. Nerve adhesion was found in the other patient, and neurolysis was performed. In both cases, the clinical results were satisfactory. This report focuses on the usefulness of ultrasonography in radial nerve assessment in patients with radial nerve palsy.

  • Objective : Radial nerve palsy is characterized by palsy or paralysis of extensors of the wrist and digits, as well as the forearm supinators. Very proximal lesions also may affect the triceps. Numbness occurs on the dorsoradial aspect of the hand and the dorsal aspect of the radial 3 and 1/2 digits. We observed 7 patients with radial nerve palsy, the results are as follows. Methods & Results : All patients were treated by the same method and treatment was performed by acupuncture and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation. the electrode were placed unilaterally on the motor points of forearm. As the result, symptoms are improved remarkably. Conclusions : Patients were treated for 5.4 weeks, 14.7 times(average). The grade was that 6 cases were good and 1 case was excellent.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the efficiency of Bee Venom Therapy by managering of radial nerve palsy patients. Method : Three patients were treatmented by Bee Venom therapy and acupucture therapy. And we took pictures of someone's wrist and checked the power of muscles by the improving phase. Results : Almost cases shows the improvement in the movement of wrist and the numbness of hand. By using acuputure and Bee Venom therapy, the symptoms of radial nerv palsy was more fastly recovered.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the korean medical treatment for compressive neuropathy of radial nerve, especially chuna treatment of cervical vertebrae. Methods : Two patients were treated with acupuncture and moxibustion, herbal medication, chuna treatment on cervical vertebrae. To evaluate the wrist drop and numbness of hand, Coding Result of arbitrary values and manual muscle test(MMT), visual analogue scale(VAS) were used. Results : After 2 weeks-treatment(in case 1) & 5 weeks-treatment(in case 2), the movement and power of wrist were restored to nearly normal range, also the numbness of hands was removed. All cases show the improvement in the movement of wrist and the numbness of hands. Conclusions : Korean medical treatment including cervical manual therapy as chuna treatment is remarkably effective for radial nerve palsy. But further studies are required to concretely prove the effectiveness of chuna treatment on central vertebrae for peripheral neuropathy.

  • Purpose: Saturday night palsy is a transient form of nerve palsy that occurs after a prolonged period of direct pressure on the course of radial nerve by one's own or spouse's head. Although commonly encountered, there have been only few studies concerning its convalescence. The purpose of this study is to predict the prognosis of Saturday night palsy based on the causes, time to recovery and degree of recovery. Materials and Methods: Retrospective study of 20 patients who were diagnosed compression radial nerve palsy was performed. The average age was 36.7 years old and the mean follow-up period was 19.6 months. We investigated sleeping hours as an indirect measure of nerve compression time, recovery of wrist and finger extension, DASH score on the monthly based follow up. Results: The mean sleeping hours was 5.8 hours and all patients showed full recovery of wrist and fingers extension with the mean duration of symptom for 3.2 months. DASH score was an average 1.53 at the last follow up and we found no statistical significance between the time to recovery and the sleeping hours. Conclusion: Complete natural recovery can be expected in compression radial nerve palsy in this study without correlation with sleeping time. Accurate diagnosis is important in order to avoid unnecessary therapeutic intervention and further study should be accomplished for clarifying the related prognostic factors in larger scale of the cases.
