Recently, As the frequency of localized heavy rains increases, the use of high-resolution radar data is increasing. The produced radar rainfall has still gaps of spatial and temporal compared to gauge observation rainfall, and in many studies, various statistical techniques are performed for correct rainfall. In this study, the precipitation correction of the S-band Dual Polarization radar in use in the flood forecast was performed using the ConvAE algorithm, one of the Convolutional Neural Network. The ConvAE model was trained based on radar data sets having a 10-min temporal resolution: radar rainfall data, gauge rainfall data for 790minutes(July 2017 in Cheongju flood event). As a result of the validation of corrected radar rainfall were reduced gaps compared to gauge rainfall and the spatial correction was also performed. Therefore, it is judged that the corrected radar rainfall using ConvAE will increase the reliability of the gridded rainfall data used in various physically-based distributed hydrodynamic models.
In this study, a beam steering measurement system was developed to perform functions such as far-field beam steering and near-field beam focusing for TX/RX modes in the near file of the AESA radar. The beam steering measurement system consists of a spherical near-field scanner, an antenna positioner, a near-field controller, a network analyzer, a radar control system, a verification radar, a simulated radio, and an AESA radar. Using the developed system, the characteristics of TX/RX patterns before and after installation of radome to AESA radar were measured, and the beam pattern was analyzed through conversion to far field-after near-field measurement. The boresight error of the radar antenna device was measured, and it was confirmed that the main lobes were formed the same before and after the simulated radar dome was mounted.
Accurately predicting localized heavy rainfall is challenging without high-resolution mesoscale cloud information in the numerical model's initial field, as precipitation intensity and amount vary significantly across regions. In the Korean Peninsula, the radar observation network covers the entire country, providing high-resolution data on hydrometeors which is suitable for data assimilation (DA). During the pre-processing stage, radar reflectivity is classified into hydrometeors (e.g., rain, snow, graupel) using the background temperature field. The mixing ratio of each hydrometeor is converted and inputted into a numerical model. Moreover, assimilating saturated water vapor mixing ratio and decomposing radar radial velocity into a three-dimensional wind vector improves the atmospheric dynamic field. This study presents radar DA experiments using a numerical prediction model to enhance the wind, water vapor, and hydrometeor mixing ratio information. The impact of radar DA on precipitation prediction is analyzed separately for each radar component. Assimilating radial velocity improves the dynamic field, while assimilating hydrometeor mixing ratio reduces the spin-up period in cloud microphysical processes, simulating initial precipitation growth. Assimilating water vapor mixing ratio further captures a moist atmospheric environment, maintaining continuous growth of hydrometeors, resulting in concentrated heavy rainfall. Overall, the radar DA experiment showed a 32.78% improvement in precipitation forecast accuracy compared to experiments without DA across four cases. Further research in related fields is necessary to improve predictions of mesoscale heavy rainfall in South Korea, mitigating its impact on human life and property.

To evaluate the accuracy of currents measured by HF radar in the coastal sea off Keum River estuary, we compared the facing radial vectors of two HF radars, and HF radar-derived currents with in-situ measurement currents. Principal component analysis was used to extract regression line and RMS deviation in the comparison. When two facing radar's radial vectors at the mid-point of baseline are compared, RMS deviation is 4.4 cm/s in winter and 5.4 cm/s in summer. When GDOP(Geometric Dilution of Precision) effect is corrected from the RMS deviations that is analyzed from the comparison between HF radar-derived and current-metermeasured currents, the error of velocity combined by HF radar-derived current is less than 5.1 cm/s in the stations having moderate GDOP values. These two results obtained from different method suggest that the lower limit of HF radar-derived current's accuracy is 5.4 cm/s in our study area. As mentioned in previous researches, RMS deviations become large in the stations located near the islands and increase as a function of mean distance from the radar site due to decrease of signal-to-noise level and the intersect angle of radial vectors. We found that an uncertain error bound of HF radar-derived current can be produced from the separation process of RMS deviations using GDOP value if GDOP value for each component is very close and RMS deviations obtained from current component comparison are also close. When the current measured in the stations having moderate GDOP values is separated into tidal and subtidal current, characteristics of tidal current ellipses analyzed from HF radar-derived current show a good agreement with those from current-meter-measured current, and time variation of subtidal current showed a response reflecting physical process driven by wind and density field.

This study performed to simulate the watershed storm runoff using data of S-band dual-polarization radar rain, GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) satellite rain, and observed rainfall at 21 ground stations operated by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) respectively. For the 3 water level gauge stations (Sancheong, Changchon, and Namgang) of NamgangDam watershed ($2,293km^2$), the KIMSTORM2 (KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model2) was applied and calibrated with parameters of initial soil moisture contents, Manning's roughness of overland and stream to the event of typhoon CHABA (82 mm in watershed aveprage) in $5^{th}$ October 2016. The radar and GPM data was corrected with CM (Conditional Merging) method such as CM-corrected Radar and CM-corrected GPM. The CM has been used for accurate rainfall estimation in water resources and meteorological field and the method combined measured ground rainfall and spatial data such as radar and satellite images by the kriging interpolation technique. For the CM-corrected Radar and CM-corrected GPM data application, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) was 0.96 respectively. The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) was 0.96 and the Volume Conservation Index (VCI) was 1.03 respectively. The CM-corrected data of Radar and GPM showed good results for the CHABA peak runoff and runoff volume simulation and improved all of $R^2$, NSE, and VCI comparing with the original data application. Thus, we need to use and apply the radar and satellite data to monitor the flood within the watershed.

North Korea has various ballistic missiles from short range to long range such as inter continental ballistic missiles. Short range ballistic missiles such as SCUD series are threatening to Korea peninsula. Therefore Korea is constructing various missile defense systems to protect country. Parameters influencing the received power from the target to the radar are transmitting power, antenna gain, carrier frequency, RCS(Radar Cross Section) of target and distance from radar to target. Especially, RCS and distance from target are not radar performance defined parameters but external parameters. Therefore radar deployment position that large RCS can be observed and target to radar distance should be considered in parallel to improve target detection probability. In this paper, RCS pattern of SCUD-B ballistic missile is calculated, received power is analyzed based on radar deployment position during ballistic missile trajectory and methode for optimum radar deployment position to improve target detection probability is suggested.

In this paper, we present the basic design results for high-resolution radar development at S-band frequency that can precisely measure the miss distance between two targets. The basic system requirement is proposed for the design of a 3.5 GHz linear frequency-modulated (LFM) radar with maximum detection distance and distance resolution of 2 km and 1 m, respectively, and the specifications of each module are determined using the radar equation. Our calculations revealed a signal-to-noise ratio ${\geq}30dB$ with a bandwidth of 150 MHz, transmission power of 43 dBm for the power amplifier, gain of 26 dBi for the antenna, noise figure of 8 dB, and radar cross-section of $1m^2$ at a target distance of 2 km from the radar. Based on the calculation results and the theory and method of LFM radar design, the hardware was designed using software defined radar technology. The results of the subsequent field test are presented that prove that the designed radar system satisfies the requirements.
Recently, as disasters caused by weather such as heavy rains have increased, interests in forecasting weather and disasters using radars have been increasing, and related studies have also been actively performed. As the Ministry of Environment(ME) has established and operated a radar network on a national scale, utilization of radars has been emphasized. However, persons in charge and researchers, who want to use the data from radars need to understand characteristics of the radar data and are also experiencing a lot of trials and errors when converting and calibrating the radar data from Universal Format(UF) files. Hence, this study developed a Radar Display and Analysis Program(RaDAP) based on Graphic User Interface(GUI) using the Java Programming Language in order for UF-type radar data to be generated in an ASCII-formatted image file and text file. The developed program can derive desired radar rainfall data and minimize the time required to perform its analysis. Therefore, it is expected that this program will contribute to enhancing the utilization of radar data in various fields.

Active array radar is evolving into digital active array radar. Digital active array radar has many advantages for making several simultaneous radar beams from the digital receive data of each element. A digital-type transceiver(TR) module is suitable for this goal in radar. In this work, the design results of an L-band digital TR module are presented to verify the possibility of fabrication for a digital active array antenna. This L-band digital TR module consists of a gallium-nitride-type HPA to achieve a more than 350-W peak output power and one-chip transceivers that include a digital waveform generator and analog digital converter. The receiving gain was 47 dB, the noise figure was less than 2 dB, and the final output type of the four channel receiving paths was one optic signal.
