  • The objective of this study was to estimate genetic trend on racing time of Thoroughbred racehorses in Korea, using a total of 209,725 racing records of 9,934 racehorses collection from January, 1990 to December, 2006. Phenotypic trends for all distances were negative at a rate of -0.148, -0.137, -0.137 and -0.139 second per race year for distances of 1,000m, 1,400m less than, 1,700m more than and overall dataset, respectively. Environmental trends were similar to phenotypic ones in all distances and trends in permanent environmental and jockey effects by race year were not found. Average genetic improvements for racing time were -0.037 and -0.030 second per race year at the 1,000m and overall dataset, respectively, which is low. But Genetic trends were decreased consistently. There is need to establish the genetic improvement program for quality of racehorses.

  • This paper calculates the elapsed time to go down a straight as a function of the corner exit speed and considers air resistance, rolling resistance, and slope resistance to figure out the force for forward acceleration. In a car racing, the most critical comer in a course is the one before the longest straight. A driver can lose a quite amount of time by taking a bad line in a corner. Taking a bad line also causes poor comer exit speed which in turn costs more elapsed time to go down a straight. The results are not so dramatic as in the case of cornering but are showing why one should take the correct corner racing line to get the maximum exit speed. Also, for the case of drag race, the elapsed time to go 1/4 mile is calculated.

  • Reaseach efforts regarding the handicap system for the fair determination of the ranking of yacht racing for various sizes have started in the end of 19th century led by Europe and America. The development of the handicap system started in 1952 as inshore and offshore races began. A simple empirical handicap system has been selected by IOR and IMS rule in mid 70's, and more advanced technique based on theoretical and computer simulation has been selected in late 70's by IMS rule. While each techniques have relative merits, it is found that the simple empirical handicap system is more effective than the advanced technique in term of reliability and easiness of use as more racing records are accumulated.

  • This study was conducted on 85 non-racing pleasure horses raised in Busan race park of Korea Racing Authority to investigate the prevalence of stereotypic behavioral problems in horses. the observation had been continued from March to October of 2010, and the study animals included warm-bloods, Jeju ponies and donkeys. Although there was no temperament problem detected, a wide range of well-known stable vices were observed in 15 horses. The most frequently observed stereotype was cribbing (8.2%), and it was followed by weaving (1.2%), biting (1.2%), eating too fast (1.2%), pawing (1.2%) and scraping the teeth on something (1.2%) with the equal prevalence rate. These behavioral disorders were only detected in warm-bloods, while those were absent in Jeju ponies and donkeys. In addition, primary behavioral disorders were more dominant than mimicking behaviors.

  • Recently, research has been actively conducted to create artificial intelligence agents that learn games through reinforcement learning. There are several factors that determine performance when the agent learns a game, but using any of the activation functions is also an important factor. This paper compares and evaluates which activation function gets the best results if the agent learns the game through reinforcement learning in the 2D racing game environment. We built the agent using a reinforcement learning algorithm and a neural network. We evaluated the activation functions in the network by switching them together. We measured the reward, the output of the advantage function, and the output of the loss function while training and testing. As a result of performance evaluation, we found out the best activation function for the agent to learn the game. The difference between the best and the worst was 35.4%.

  • A light-weight cantilever type towing carriage was devised and installed in the towing tank at Seoul National University. Wireless measurement devices were also provided for appropriate data acquisition during high-speed towing tests. With the new carriage system, a series of model tests were performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the racing boat in the towing tank and the resistance test results had sufficient accuracy so that they could be used in the development of a high speed planning hull.

  • The objective of present study was to ascertain sex determination for individual identification, parentage control, and sex chromosome anomalies in horse. PCR amplification products of the equine sex determining region of the Y chromosome gene (SRY) and amelogenin gene (AMEL) were detected by using agarose gel electrophoresis. A normal sire and foal II showed 1 SRY band (430 bp) and 3 AMEL (AMELX, AMELY, and AMELX/Y) band, 175 bp, 160 bp, 190 bp, respectively, and a normal dam and foal I showed a single AMELX band (175 bp). These results enables a quick diagnosis for sex determination prior to cytogenetic analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can quickly generate and synthesize city maps in racing games. Racing games are characterized by moving a wide map rather than a fixed map, but designing and developing a wide map requires a lot of production time. This problem can be mitigated by creating a large map in the preprocessing step, but a fixed map makes the game tedious. It is also inefficient to process all the various maps in the preprocessing step. In order to solve this problem, we propose a technique to create a terrain pattern in the preprocessing process, to generate a map in real time, and to synthesize various maps randomly. In addition, we reduced unnecessary rendering computations by integrating view-dependent techniques into the proposed framework. This study was developed in Unity3D and can be used for various contents as well as racing game.

  • An 18-year-old miniature Appaloosa stallion presented with 6 months of history of sanguineous crusts on medial hind limbs and discomfort of micturition. Cauliflower-like and small masses were treated with cryotherapy for 6 months, but the regrowth of masses occurred. Subsequently, local excision via laser and topical treatment with 5% 5-fluorouracil for 5 months were followed. However, the horse was euthanized 4 months later due to regrowth of the masses. The mass was diagnosed as penile papilloma with cellular atypia and Equus caballus papillomavirus type 2 (EcPV-2) DNA was detected. This is the first report of equine penile neoplasm with EcPV-2 infection in Asia.
