  • A four-legged Walking Machine can move on the plain terrain with mobility and stability and stability, but if there exist any obstacles on the terrain of the motion direction, it takes extra time to cross those obstacles and the stability should be considered during motion. The main objective is the study a Quadruped which can cross obstacles with better mobility, stability and fuel economy than any other wheeled or tracked vehicles. Vertical step, isolated wall and ditch are the basic obstacles and by understanding those three cases perfectly, a Quadruped can move on any mixed rough terrain as 4-legged terrestrial vertebrates move. Each leg of a Quadruped has a limited walk space called a walking volume and this is very important to deter- mine the crossing capability in a static analysis. A Quadruped can be simplified with links and joints. By applying the research method, a quadruped can determine the control procedures as soon as it receives the terrain information from scanner and finally can move with mobility and stability.

  • This paper describes a static gait generation process and a mechanical design process of leg mechanisms for quadruped robots. Actually robot walking is realized with the joint motion of leg mechanisms. In order to calculate the time-angle trajectories for each joint of leg mechanisms, we generate end-tip trajectories with time for each leg in the global inertial coordinate system intuitively, followed by coordinate transformations of the trajectories into the local coordinates system fixed in each leg, finally the angle-time trajectories of each joint of leg mechanisms are obtained with inverse kinematics. The stability of the gait generated in this paper was verified by a multi-body dynamic analysis using the commercial software $ADAMS^{(R)}$. Additionally the mechanical specifications such as gear reduction ratio, electrical specifications of motor and electrical power consumption during walking have been confirmed by the multi-body dynamic analysis. Finally we constructed a small quadruped robot and confirmed the gait.

  • There are many types of walking robots in the world. For dynamic walking of the robots it is necessary to keep its dynamic stability. The dynamic stability is influenced by the position of ZMP (zero moment point). In this paper we study the control of the ZMP position of walking robot. For experiment we developed a quadruped robot and analyzed the dynamic stability of the robot. Developed robot has 2 joints at each leg and WBO (weight balancing oscillator) on the body of the robot. The WBO is designed to move linearly from side to side when the robot walks dynamically. Walking test was performed to verify the validity of the proposed methods. Especially we showed that the dynamic stability of the robot can be improved without sacrifice of the walking speed by control the WBO.

  • A proper walking pattern is to be assigned for a walk of multi-legged robots. For the purpose of identifying a good walking pattern for multi-legged robots, this paper consider a simple model of quadruped robotic walking and analyze its walking balance based on the centroid of foot polygons formed in every step. A performance index to estimate the walking balance is also proposed. Simulation studies show that the centroid trajectory of foot polygons and the walking balance in a common quadruped walking are different according to the walking pattern employed. Based on the walking balance index and a bio-mimetic aspect, a useful walking pattern for quadruped robots is finally addressed.

  • Though a legged robot has high terrain adaptability as compared with a wheeled vehicle, its moving speed is considerably low in general. For attaining a high moving speed with a legged robot, a dynamically stable walking, such as running for a biped robot and a trot gait or a bound gait for a quadruped robot, is a promising solution. However, energy efficiency of a dynamically stable walking is generally lower than the efficiency of a stable gait such as a crawl gait. In this paper, we present an experimental study on the energy efficiency of a quadruped walking vehicle. Energy consumption of two walking patterns for a trot gait is investigated though experiments using a TITAN-VIII.

  • This paper presents a gait control scheme for teleoperation of a quadruped-walking robot. In teleoperation of a walking robot, an operator gives a real-time generated velocity command to a walking robot instead of a moving trajectory. When the direction of the velocity command is changed, the periodic gait is not available because this requires an initial foot position . This paper proposes the aperiodic gait control scheme that can converge to a periodic gait Simulation results are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed control scheme.

  • Most of the existing multiped walking robots are biomimetic, i.e. they are designed to have the shapes of living things such as animals or insects. Even though those robots are familiar to us, they have some drawbacks in the view point of walking efficiency such as stability and walking speed. In this paper, we introduce a quadruped walking robot that can perform fast and stable walking by virtue of its distinctive leg positions. The proposed quadruped robot has a foreleg, a hindleg, a left leg, and a right leg. In the conventional robots, dynamic walking is needed to increase walking speed. Dynamic walking is difficult to be accomplished and is apt to be unstable. The proposed robot can move its legs in a manner that its center of gravity is always laid in the supporting polygon, so it can perform fast and stable walking without dynamic walking.

  • Until present, most studies about energy efficiency of quadruped walking robot are mathematical modelings, dynamic analysis or simulation consumption energy per period by basic efficiency evaluate in this paper, a quadruped walking robot Titan-VIII is used for walking experience. The total moving length is about 2[m]. The stride length is 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, walking period is changed by 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0[sec] per each stride length. So consumption energy of 12 cases are measured. The energy efficiency of quadruped walking robot was analyzed by data that is saved by an experiment.

  • This paper presents a novel bio-mimetic quadruped walking robot with a waist joint, which connects the front and the rear parts of the body. The new robot, called ELIRO-1(Eating LIzard RObot version 1), can bend its body while the legs is transferred, thereby increasing the stride and speed of the robot. The waist-jointed walking robot can move easily from side to side, which is an important feature to guarantee a larger gait stability margin than that of a conventional single rigid-body walking robot. We design the mechanical structure of the robot, which is small and light to have high movability and high degree of human friendship. In this paper, we describe characteristics of the waist joint and leg mechanism as well as the analysis using ADAMS to select appropriate actuators. In addition, a hardware and software of the controller of ELIRO-1 are described.

  • A quadruped walking robot has a superior adaptablility as well as highly adaptable mobility in various environments. These special advantages are outstanding in the mobile robot group. In this work, we introduce the method for omni-directional gait and rotational gait which is the generalized control algorithm to perform any direction commands. In addition, to improve the stability of quadruped walking robot, we performed the optimization between walking angle and sequence of feet. The proposed ideas are applied to the actual design of MRWALLSPECT III(Multifunctional Robot for Wall inSpection version 3) that is designed to inspect of the large surface of industrial utilities. By implementing the proposed idea on the robot, it’s effectiveness is experimentally confirmed.
