This study proposes a method to analyze the distribution of coal porosity disturbances after the excavation of ultra-large-diameter water jet boreholes using a coal wetting and softening model. The high-pressure jet is regarded as a short-term high-pressure water injection process. The water injection range is the coal softening range. The time when the reference point of the borehole wall is shocked by the high-pressure water column is equivalent to the time of high-pressure water injection of the coal wall. The influence of roadway excavation with support and borehole diameter on the ultra-large-diameter jet drilling excavation is also studied. The coal core around the borehole is used to measure the gas permeability for determining the porosity disturbance distribution of the coal in the sampling plane to verify the correctness of the simulation results. Results show that the excavation borehole is beneficial to the expansion of the roadway excavation disturbance, and the expansion distance of the roadway excavation disturbance has a quadratic relationship with the borehole diameter. Wetting and softening of the coal around the borehole wall will promote the uniform distribution of the overall porosity disturbance and reduce the amplitude of disturbance fluctuations.
Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is a promising method for hydrogen supplying as a critical step in hydrogen fuel cell commercialization in mobile applications. Modelling and understanding of the reactor behavior is an attractive research field to develop an efficient reformer. Three-layer feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) and Box-Behnken design (BBD) were used to modelling of MSR process using the Cu-SiO2 aerogel catalyst. Furthermore, impacts of the basic operational variables and their mutual interactions were studied. The results showed that the most affecting parameters were the reaction temperature (56%) and its quadratic term (20.5%). In addition, it was also found that the interaction between temperature and Steam/Methanol ratio is important on the MSR performance. These models precisely predict MSR performance and have great agreement with experimental results. However, on the basis of statistical criteria the ANN technique showed the greater modelling ability as compared with statistical BBD approach.

RSA, the most commonly used public-key cryptosystem, is based on the difficulty of factoring very large integers. The fastest known factoring algorithm is the Number Field Sieve(NFS). NFS first chooses two polynomials having common root modulo N and consists of the following four major steps; 1. Polynomial Selection 2. Sieving 3. Matrix 4. Square Root, of which the most time consuming step is the Sieving step. However, in recent years, the importance of the Polynomial Selection step has been studied widely, because one can save a lot of time and memory in sieving and matrix step if one chooses optimal polynomial for NFS. One of the ideal ways of choosing sieving polynomial is to choose two polynomials with same degree. Montgomery proposed the method of selecting two (nonlinear) quadratic sieving polynomials. We proposed two cubic polynomials using 5-term geometric progression.
The probabilistic characterization of wind field characteristics is a significant task for fatigue reliability assessment of long-span railway bridges in wind-prone regions. In consideration of the effect of wind direction, the stochastic properties of wind field should be represented by a bivariate statistical model of wind speed and direction. This paper presents the construction of the bivariate model of wind speed and direction at the site of a railway arch bridge by use of the long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) data. The wind characteristics are derived by analyzing the real-time wind monitoring data, such as the mean wind speed and direction, turbulence intensity, turbulence integral scale, and power spectral density. A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm-based finite mixture modeling method is proposed to formulate the joint distribution model of wind speed and direction. For the probability density function (PDF) of wind speed, a double-parameter Weibull distribution function is utilized, and a von Mises distribution function is applied to represent the PDF of wind direction. The SQP algorithm with multi-start points is used to estimate the parameters in the bivariate model, namely Weibull-von Mises mixture model. One-year wind monitoring data are selected to validate the effectiveness of the proposed modeling method. The optimal model is jointly evaluated by the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and coefficient of determination, $R^2$. The obtained results indicate that the proposed SQP algorithm-based finite mixture modeling method can effectively establish the bivariate model of wind speed and direction. The established bivariate model of wind speed and direction will facilitate the wind-induced fatigue reliability assessment of long-span bridges.

The log-density ratio of the conditional densities of the predictors given the response variable provides useful information for variable selection in the logistic regression model. In this paper, we consider the predictors that are needed and how they should be included in the model. If the conditional distributions are skewed, the distributions can be considered as gamma distributions. Under this assumption, linear and log terms are generally included in the model. The log-odds graph is a very useful graphical tool in this study. A graphical study is presented which shows that if the conditional distributions of x|y for the two groups overlap significantly, we need both the linear and quadratic terms. On the contrary, if they are well separated, only the linear or log term is needed in the model.
There is a growing trend of considering uncertainty in optimization process since last few decades. In this regard, Robust Design Optimization (RDO) scheme has gained increasing momentum because of its virtue of improving performance of structure by minimizing the variation of performance and ensuring necessary safety and feasibility of constraint under uncertainty. In the present study, RDO of reinforced concrete folded plate and shell structure has been carried out incorporating uncertainty in the relevant parameters by Monte Carlo Simulation. Folded plate and shell structures are among the new generation popular structures often used in aesthetically appealing constructions. However, RDO study of such important structures is observed to be scarce. The optimization problem is formulated as cost minimization problem subjected to the force and displacements constraints considering dead, live and wind load. Then, the RDO is framed by simultaneously optimizing the expected value and the variation of the performance function using weighted sum approach. The robustness in constraint is ensured by adding suitable penalty term and through a target reliability index. The RDO problem is solved by Sequential Quadratic Programming. Subsequently, the results of the RDO are compared with conventional deterministic design approach. The parametric study implies that robust designs can be achieved by sacrificing only small increment in initial cost, but at the same time, considerable quality and guarantee of the structural behaviour can be ensured by the RDO solutions.
We investigate solar and lunar motions in the Seonmyeong (SM) calendar that was compiled by Xu, Ang of the Tang dynasty (A.D. 618-907) in China and used for 71 years from 822 to 892. This calendar was also used in Korea during the Goryeo dynasty (A.D. 918-1392) and in Japan for 823 years from 862 to 1684, the longest time among the three countries. Referring to historical documents of China, Korea, and Japan, we analyze the calendrical methods of calculating the daily apparent movements of the Sun and Moon in the SM calendar, which were considered their unequal motions, and compare the movements with the results of modern calculations for three periods in the Goryeo dynasty: 919, 1155, and 1392 years (i.e., the beginning, middle, and ending of the dynasty, respectively). We find that a quadratic equation was employed to obtain the daily movement of the Sun using physical quantities on the instant of each solar term, which was tabulated in its calendar book such as the Goryeosa (History of the Goryeo Dynasty). For quantitative analysis, we compute the mean absolute difference (MAD) of the daily apparent movement between the SM calendar and modern calculations and obtain 0.33, 0.30, and 0.31 arcmin for the periods of 919, 1155, and 1392 years, respectively. Meanwhile, we find relatively large MAD values in the daily movement of the Moon: 0.217, 0.284, and 0.240 degrees for each corresponding year. An interesting point is that the MAD value in the lunar motion shows the maximum in 1155 years, and is the minimum in the solar motion. In conclusion, we believe that this study will facilitate in the understanding of the SM calendar further, particularly in the calendrical methods of calculating sunrise, sunset, and eclipse times.

A numerical model has been developed by employing a finite element method to simulate the depth-averaged 2-D dispersion of the heat pollutant, which is an important pollutant material in natural streams. Among the finite element methods, the Streamline Upwind/Petrov Galerkin (SUPG) method was applied. Also both linear and quadratic elements can be applied so that irregular river boundaries can be easily represented. To show the movement of heat pollutants, the reaction term describing heat transfer was represented as an equation in which sink/source term is proportional to the difference between the equilibrium temperature and water surface temperature. The equation was expressed so that the water surface temperature changes according to the temperature transfer coefficient and the equilibrium temperature. For the calibration of the model developed, analytic and numerical results from a case of rectangular channel with full width continuous injection have been compared in a steady state. The comparisons showed that the numerical results were in good agreement with analytical solutions. The application site was selected from the downstream of Paldang dam to Jamsil submerged weir, and overall length of this site is about 22.5 km. The change of water temperature caused by the discharge from the Guri sewage treatment plant has been simulated, and results were similar to the observed data. Overall it is concluded that the developed model can represent the water temperature changes due to heat transport accurately. But the verification using observed data will further enhance the validity of the model.

Two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures of tidal currents on southeastern waters of Korea off Kyungnam coast were investigated via a series of numerical models based on dynamic principles. With a two-dimensional tidal model, tidal regimes of major eight tidal constituents (M$_2$, S$_2$, K$_1$, O$_1$, N$_2$, K$_2$, P$_1$, Q$_1$) were computed. Model results showed that the computed results were in good agreement with coastal observations. On the basis of these results the model was further improved to compute three-dimensional structure of tidal current in inner Jinhai and Masan Bay regions of the model area where severe pollutions occur due to red tide by combination of the previous two-dimensional model and inner three-dimensional model. For this work, three-dimensional Galerkin-Spectral model and two-dimensional depth-integrated model are dynamically combined by the method presented by Davies (1980). In addition to the previous work by Davies, the advective term and quadratic bottom friction term are included in present Three-dimensional numerical model. The computed results of M$_2$ tidal current ellipses with respect to depth showed general agreements with those of current observations by KORDI (1990).
Purpose - This research intends to find out whether R&D cost stickiness shows differentiated aspects depending on exports in Korea. A cost behavior that indicates a lower rate of costs decrease when sales decrease than the rate of costs increase when sales increase is called cost stickiness. This sticky cost behavior is caused by considering the adjusting costs. This study aims to empirically verify that R&D cost stickiness is greater in export firms than in non-export firms. We also investigate the effect of exports on R&D cost stickiness is nonlinear. Design/methodology - We obtain data for the analysis from Kis-Value and TS2000 from 2012 to 2020. This study tests for R&D cost stickiness of exports using the cost stickiness model developed by Anderson et al. (2003) that is used in a lot of prior literature. To explore the nonlinear behavior of R&D cost stickiness we include a quadratic term of exports in our model. Findings - The results of our analysis are as follows. First, we observed that R&D costs of export firms are more sticky than that of non-export firms. Our result indicated that export firms are less likely to reduce R&D costs in decreasing sales periods in preparation for future sales recovery. Second, our empirical evidence shows that export firms view R&D costs much favorably. However, we hypothesize that the effect of export intensity on R&D costs may not necessarily be linear. Our result shows the effect of exports intensity on R&D stickiness is thus nonlinear, forming a reverse U-shaped curve. When export intensity exceeds a certain threshold, the growth rate of R&D costs appears to be viewed negatively. Firms with relatively high export intensity do not support R&D costs, viewing them as taking away firms' resources from other more productive costs. On the contrary, those with export intensity under the threshold view R&D costs as beneficial and therefore promote further R&D costs when revenue decreases. Originality/value - The results of this research can contribute academically to the expansion of empirical research on R&D cost stickiness. R&D cost stickiness varies by industry. As a result of our research, the managers of export firms recognize the importance of R&D to lead innovation. We expected that this research contributes to further studies on R&D costs and cost stickiness. Second, this research has implications from a business perspectives. Our findings of export firms' R&D stickiness suggest that export firms' managers should consider keeping the stickiness of R&D when revenue decreases because it is essential for exporting firms to maintain their R&D stickiness to secure long-term competitiveness. R&D stickiness can be used on a practical basis to emphasize the need for continuous investment in exporting firms' R&D activities.
