The time-stepping boundary element method has been so far applied by the authors to transient heat conduction in isotropic solids as well as in orthotropic solids. In this paper, attempt is made to extend the method to 2-D transient heat conduction in arbitrarily anisotropic solids. The resulting boundary integral equation is discretized by means of the boundary element with quadratic interpolation. The final system of equations thus obtained is solved by advancing the time step from the given initial state to the final state. Through numerical compuation of a few examples the potential usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated.

Hydrodynamic analysis of a surface-piercing body with an open chamber was performed with incident regular waves and forced-heaving body motions. The floating body was simulated in the time domain using a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) technique based on potential theory. This paper focuses on the hydrodynamic behavior of the free surfaces inside the chamber for various input conditions, including a two-input system: both incident wave profiles and forced body velocities were implemented in order to calculate the maximum surface elevations for the respective inputs and evaluate their interactions. An appropriate equivalent linear or quadratic viscous damping coefficient, which was selected from experimental data, was employed on the free surface boundary inside the chamber to account for the viscous energy loss on the system. Then a comprehensive parametric study was performed to investigate the nonlinear behavior of the wave-body interaction.

In this study a control law and performance potential of semi-active suspensions for a tractor/semi-trailer have been investigated. The control law for airbag semi-active suspensions modeled in this study is developed using feedback linearization and Linear Quadratic (LQ) optimal control method. Inherent nonlinearity of the airbag suspensions has been considered in the control law development. It has been shown that the proposed semi-active control law provides better performance than that of well known sky-hook damping control strategy.
This paper addresses linear quadratic regulation (LQR) for variable speed variable pitch wind turbines. Because of the inherent nonlinearity of wind turbines, a set of operating conditions is identified and then a LQR controller is designed for each of the operating points. The feedback controller gains are then interpolated linearly to get a control law for the entire operating region. In addition, the aerodynamic torque and effective wind speed are estimated online to get the gain-scheduling variable for implementing the controller. The potential of this method is verified through simulation with the help of MATLAB/Simulink and GH Bladed. The performance and mechanical load when using LQR are also compared with those obtained when using a PI controller.
This paper presents nonlinear analysis of a functionally graded square plate integrated with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. Geometric nonlinearity was considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential was assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction and trigonometric function along the planar coordinate. The effect of non homogeneous index was investigated on the responses of the system. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation has been performed for studying the effect of two parameters of assumed foundation on the mechanical and electrical components. A comparison between linear and nonlinear responses of the system presents necessity of this study.
This paper presents nonlinear analysis of an arbitrary functionally graded circular plate integrated with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. Geometric nonlinearity is considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential is assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction. After derivation of general nonlinear equations, as an instance, numerical results of a functionally graded material integrated with functionally graded piezoelectric material obeying two different functionalities is investigated. The effect of different parameters such as parameters of foundation, non homogenous index and boundary conditions can be investigated on the mechanical and electrical results of the system. A comprehensive comparison between linear and nonlinear responses of the system presents necessity of this study. Furthermore, the obtained results can be validated by using previous linear and nonlinear analyses after removing the effect of foundation.

Finite element analyses for bursting failure prediction in bulge forming under combined internal pressure and independent axial feeding are carried out. By means of the FEM combined with Oyane's ductile fracture criterion based on Hills quadratic plastic potential, the forming limit and bursting pressure level are investigated for a seamed tube that comprises of weldment, heat affected zone(HAZ) and base material parts. Especially, in order to determine the material property of HAZ tensile tests for the base material and the weld metal are executed based on iso-strain approach. Finally, through a series of bulge forming simulations with consideration of the weldment and HAZ it is concluded that the proposed method would be able to predict the bursting pressure and fracture initiation site more realistically, so the approach can be extended to a wide range of practical bulge forming processes.
Classical and first-order nonlocal beam theory are employed in this study to assess the thermal buckling performance of a small-scale conical, cylindrical beam. The beam is constructed from functionally graded (FG) porosity-dependent material and operates under the thermal conditions of the environment. Imperfections within the non-uniform beam vary along both the radius and length direction, with continuous changes in thickness throughout its length. The resulting structure is functionally graded in both radial and axial directions, forming a bi-directional configuration. Utilizing the energy method, governing equations are derived to analyze the thermal stability and buckling characteristics of a nanobeam across different beam theories. Subsequently, the extracted partial differential equations (PDE) are numerically solved using the generalized differential quadratic method (GDQM), providing a comprehensive exploration of the thermal behavior of the system. The detailed discussion of the produced results is based on various applied effective parameters, with a focus on the potential application of nanotubes in enhancing sports bikes performance.

Quadratic programming problems(QP) have been widely used as a direction-finding subproblem in the engineering and structural design optimization. To develop an efficient solution algorithm for the QP subproblems, theoretical aspects and numerical behavior of mathematical programming methods that can be used as QP solver are studied and compared. For the solution of both primal and dual QP, Simplex, gradient projection(GRP), and augmented Lagrange multiplier algorithms are investigated and coded. From the numerical study, it is found that the primal GRP algorithm with potential constraint strategy and the dual Simplex algorithm are more attractive and effective than the others. They have theoretical robustness as well. Moreover, primal GRP algorithm is preferable in case the number of constraints is larger than the number of design variables. Favorable features of GRP and Simplex algorithm are merged into a combined algorithm, which is useful in the structural design optimization.
In order to analyze the response of the offshore structure numerically, the linear potential theory is generally applied for simplicity, and only the radiation damping is considered among various damping forces. Therefore, the results of a numerical simulation can be different from the motion of the structure in a real environment. To reduce the differences between the simulation results and experimental results, the viscous damping, which affects the motion of the structure, is also taken into account. The appropriate damping model is essential for the numerical simulation in order to obtain precise responses of the offshore structure. In this study, various damping models such as linear or quadratic damping and the nonlinear drag force from numerous slender bodies were used to simulate the free decay motion of the platform, and its characteristics were confirmed. The optimized damping model was found by comparing the simulation results to the experimental results. The hydrodynamic forces and wave exciting forces of the structure were obtained using WAMIT, and the free decay test was simulated using OrcaFlex. A free decay test of the scale model was performed by KRISO.
