Control Efficacy of Organic Materials Against Artichoke Aphid (Capitophorus elaeagni, Del Guercio) that Damage Korean Thistle (고려엉겅퀴를 가해하는 여뀌못털진딧물에 대한 몇 가지 유기농업자재의 방제효과)

  • Korean thistle (Cirsium setidens Nakai), also called Gondre, is an edible perennial herbaceous plant. A new occurrence of aphids has been confirmed on Korean thistle, which is expected to damage crops. The control effect of organic materials was tested to develop an eco-friendly control method for aphid. Pyrethrins+paraffinic oils exhibited a 98% control effect, pyrethrins+matrine+pyroligneous acid showed a 95% control effect, and azadirachtin+rotenone was found to have a 75% control effect. Pyrethrins appear to be the most effective; no damage (phytotoxticity) was caused with organic materials spraying.

  • The effects of mixtures of each of rice hull charcoal and wood charcoal with pyroligneous acid on the cultivation and antioxidant activities of rice were investigated. Results of the total phenolic compounds, DPPH radical electron-donating ability and xanthine oxidase stress activity analyses revealed that the environment-friendly materials increased the total antioxidant capacity in rice. In the case of palatability of rice, total amylose blue value and starch-I2color reaction analyses, data showed that environment-friendly materials generally decreased the amylose content of rice. Also, the environment-friendly materials improved the rice endosperm quality.

Effect of Pyroligneous Acid Liquor on the Maturity of Pig Manure Compost (목초액 처리가 돈분퇴비의 부숙도에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the effect of pyroligneous acid liquor (PAL) on the maturity of pig manure compost, PAL was treated to the compost piles. The treatments included applications of 100 and 300 times diluted PAL in addition to the control. The compost piles were stirred in three times at the 1st, 10th, and 25th day of composting. Temperature in the compost pile of control treatment increased from 28 to $60^{\circ}C$ within 10 days and remained nearly at the level until 30th day, then it began to decrease. On the other hand, temperature of the PAL-100 and PAL-300 treatments reached 65 to $70^{\circ}C$ within 8 days and became stabilized until 30th day, then the temperature decreased to about $28^{\circ}C$. However, the temperature of control was stabilized approximately at the 40th day. Initially, the pH of control treatment dropped from 8.2 to slightly above pH 8.0 during 4th day, but that of the PAL-100 treatment declined to 7.8. Among treatments, pH value of PAL-100 treatment was the lowest, which was about 7.3 after becoming stabilization. Also the germination index (GI) was increased at all treatments. The C/N ratio range of PAL-100 treatment was better balanced than others and was at 24.3. Moreover the round paper chromatogram of extracted solution of compost of PAL-100 treatment was the sharpest and clearest among treatments. The GI values of control, PAL-100, and PAL-300 in 60 days of composting were about 108, 120, and 118 in germination test using chinese cabbage, respectively. It can be concluded that the addition of diluted PAL solution is effective in composting of pig manure.

Enhanced Effectiveness of Spodoptera litura Nucleopolyhedrovirus with Organic Acids and Functional Matters (유기산, 기능성물질 혼합에 의한 담배거세미나방 핵다각체병바이러스의 병원성 증진효과)

  • This experiment was conducted to improve activity of Spodoptera litura Nucleopoly-hedrovirus (SINPV) combined with organic and functional matters. In combination of SINPV mixed with organic matters, LT$_{50}$ values of SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^{5}$ PIBs/$m\ell$ combined with boric acid of 2,000 ppm were 4.5 days. It was 1.5 days shorter than SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^{5}$ PIBs/$m\ell$ alone. The body weight of larva infected with SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^{5}$ PIBs/$m\ell$ combined with boric acid of 2,000ppm was not increased, and S. litura was completely dead in 7 days after treatment. It suggested that addition of boric acid in SINPV application enhanced the pathogenicity against S. litura larvae. In laboratory experiment of combination of SINPV with functional matters, LT$_{50}$values of SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^4$ PIBs/$m\ell$ alone were 7.3 days, but those of SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^4$ PIBs/$m\ell$ with electrolyzed oxidizing water, pyroligneous liquor or kitosan were 10.4, 9.3 and 11.2 days, respectively. Foliar Fertilization Effect of Environmentally-Friendly Organic Agricultural Materials for Grape Cultivation (포도재배를 위한 친환경 유기농자재의 엽면시비 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate foliar treatment effects of organic agricultural materials for the environmentally-friendly cultivation of grape. The organic materials applied were chitosan, wood vinegar (pyroligneous acid), amino acid solution, and ginkgo leaf extract. All the organic materials were relatively strong acidic ranging lower than pH 4.6. when comparing with other organic materials, amino acid solution contained relatively high contents of selected plant nutrients, such as N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn. As comparison of selected soil properties in the grape cultivating field, soil pH values were lower at the harvest stage than at the first stage of grape growing (before treating the organic materials), and electrical conductivity (EC) and soil organic matter content were higher at the harvest stage in the all plots. The concentrations of available phosphorus increased in most of the plot soils except in control plot (conventional treatment). The concentrations of exchangeable K decreased in the plot treated with ginkgo leaf extract and the control plot. The exchangeable Mg concentrations decreased in soils of all the plots. On the other hand, the concentrations of N and K in the grape leaves were higher with the treatments of chitosan and amino acid solution, P concentrations were higher with the applications of chitosan, wood vinegar and amino acid solution, and Ca and Mg concentrations were higher with chitosan and amino acid solution treatments, respectively, than with others. The yields of grape were higher, $1,581{\sim}1,583kg\;10a^{-1}$, in the control and wood vinegar treatment plots than others. Sugar contents of grape were not different among all the plots.

Evaluation of Rice Bran Pellet for Environment-sound Weed Control in Paddy Fields (쌀겨 펠렛을 이용한 친환경 논 잡초 방제)

  • Weed control is one of the important and difficult practices in environment-sound agriculture. This study was conducted to establish environment-sound weed control in paddy fields using rice bran pellet. Application of rice bran pellet at a rate of 1${\sim}$3 Mg $ha^{-1}$ reduced weed occurrence by 46${\sim}$69% without using any chemical herbicide. However, rice bran application at a rate of greater than 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$ increased protein content in milled rice and decreased palatability value. Therefore, fertilization rate before transplanting needs to be reduced from $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ = 55-45-40 kg $ha^{-1}$ to 28-23-20 kg $ha^{-1}$, in order to decrease protein content and increase palatability value without decreasing rice yield. Pyroligneous acid and brown rice vinegar had a relatively weak activity to inhibit weed emergence compared with rice bran. When butachlor herbicide was applied at a rate of 0.75 kg $ha^{-1}$, 50% of recommended rate, co-application of rice bran pellet at a rate of 1 Mg $ha^{-1}$ enhanced weed control value from 63% to 75%.

Effect of organic medicinal charcoal supplementation in finishing pig diets

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of organic medicinal charcoal as a feed additive on aflatoxin absorption, odor emission, fecal microflora and in vitro digestibility in pig diet. A 10-day trial was conducted with 20 [(Yorkshire ${\times}$ Landrace) ${\times}$ Duroc] finishing pigs ($BW=81{\pm}3.3kg$) to investigate the population of Lactobacillus and E. coli in feces and fecal odor ($NH_3$, $H_2S$, total mercaptans, and Acetic acid) in vivo. The in vitro and in vivo treatments included: control (basal diet; CON); (basal diet + 0.25% Organic Medicinal Charcoal; OMC); (basal diet + 0.50% Pyroligneous Charcoal; PC); and (basal diet + 0.50% Coconut tree Charcoal; CC). The aflatoxin absorption capacity was 100, 10, and 20% in OMC, PC, and CC, respectively. The digestibility of dry matter in OMC was significantly higher than that of CON, PC, or CC in vitro (p < 0.05). The digestibility of organic matter in OMC was found to be significantly different from that of CON (p < 0.05). Fecal ammonia and $H_2S$ emissions of OMC were observed to be significantly lower than those of CON, PC, and CC (p < 0.05). Lactobacillus counts in feces of OMC and CC were significantly higher than those of CON and PC (p < 0.05). Fecal E. coli counts of OMC and CC were lower than those of CON and PC (p < 0.05). It was concluded that organic medicinal charcoal can be used as a feed additive in pig diets because it improves the digestibility of feed and fecal odor, and has positive effects on the population of microorganism in feces.
