  • The pyramidal reaction wheel arrangement is one of the configurations that can be used in attitude control simulators for evaluation of attitude control performance in satellites. In this arrangement, the wheels are oriented in a pyramidal configuration with a tilt angle. In this paper, a study of pyramidal reaction wheel arrangement is carried out in order to find the optimum tilt angle that minimizes total power consumption of the system. The attitude control system is analyzed and the pyramidal configuration is implemented in numerical simulation. Optimization is carried out by using an iterative process and the optimum tilt angle that provides minimum system power consumption is obtained. Simulation results show that the system requires the least power by using optimum tilt angle in reaction wheels arrangement.

  • In case of visual sensing systems with multiple mirrors, systematic errors need to be reduced by the system calibration and the mirror position adjustment in order to enhance system measurement accuracy. In this paper, a self calibration method is presented for a visual sensing system designed to measure the three-dimensional information in deformable peg-in-hole tasks. It is composed of a CCD camera and a series of mirrors including two pyramidal mirrors. By using an image of the inner pyramidal mirror taken by the system, the error parameters of the inner pyramidal mirror could be calibrated or adjusted. Also the influence of the plane mirrors is investigated.

  • Triangular pyramid and Quadrangular pyramid elements for partial double-layer spherical reticulated shells of pyramidal system are investigated in the present study. Macro programs for six typical partial double-layer spherical reticulated shells of pyramidal system are compiled by using the ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). Internal force analysis of six spherical reticulated shells is carried out. Distribution regularity of the stress and displacement are studied. A shape optimization program is proposed by adopting the sequence two-stage algorithm (RDQA) in FORTRAN environment based on the characteristics of partial double-layer spherical reticulated shells of pyramidal system and the ideas of discrete variable optimization design. Shape optimization is achieved by considering the objective function of the minimum total steel consumption, global and locality constraints. The shape optimization of six spherical reticulated shells is calculated with the span of 30m~120m and rise to span ratio of 1/7~1/3. The variations of the total steel consumption along with the span and rise to span ratio are discussed with contrast to the results of shape optimization. The optimal combination of main design parameters for six spherical reticulated shells is investigated, i.e., the number of the optimal grids. The results show that: (1) The Kiewitt and Geodesic partial double-layer spherical reticulated shells of triangular pyramidal system should be preferentially adopted in large and medium-span structures. The range of rise to span ratio is from 1/6 to 1/5. (2) The Ribbed and Schwedler partial double-layer spherical reticulated shells of quadrangular pyramidal system should be preferentially adopted in small-span structures. The rise to span ratio should be 1/4. (3) Grids of the six spherical reticulated shells can be optimized after shape optimization and the total steel consumption is optimized to be the least.

  • Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is a new manufacturing process and its application is getting growth. However, the product qualities such as mechanical strength, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality are low compared with conventional manufacturing process such as molding and machining. In this study not only mechanical characteristics of polymer sandwich panel having three dimensional core layer but also mechanical characteristics of core layer itself were analyzed. The shape of three dimensional core layer was pyramidal kagome structure. This core layer was fabricated by two different methods, injection molding with PP resin and material jetting type 3D printing with acrylic photo curable resin. The material for face sheets in the polymer sandwich panel was PP. Maximum load, stiffness, and elongation at break were examined for core layers fabricated by two different methods and also assembled polymer sandwich panels. 3D printed core showed brittle behavior, but the brittleness decreased in polymer sandwich panel containing 3D printed core. The availability of 3D printed article for the three dimensional core layer of polymer sandwich panel was verified.

  • We made a pyramidal horn antenna system for 21cm cosmic radio wave. The antenna system has a rectangular waveguide with $TE_{10}$ mode and a copper probe to detect the electromagnetic wave in waveguide. The parameters of the probe are obtained by experiments using two waveguides. Pyramidal horn antenna is designed to get a gain of 20dB. The size of the aperture of this horn is $94cm{\times}74cm$. The beam width of half power is about $14.7^{\circ}$ for the frequency of 1.4GHz. The horn is made of aluminum plate with a thickness of 2mm. The signal from horn and waveguide is amplified in a receiver system and is converted into DC in the detecter. The intensity of the signal is recorded on a chart recorder. We observed the sun using this simple radio telescope and obtained the brightness temperature of $2.2{\times}10^5K$, which indicates that the sun is quiet at 21cm.

  • In this study, we developed a method of improving the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) response characteristics by depositing a nanoporous Ag metal thin film through cluster source sputtering after forming a pyramidal texture structure on the Si substrate surface. A reactive ion etching (RIE) system with a metal mesh inside the system was used to form a pyramidal texture structure on the Si surface without following a complicated photolithography process, unlike in case of the conventional RIE system. The size of the texture structure increased with the RIE process time. However, after a process time of 60 min, the size of the structure did not increase but tended to saturate. When the RF power increased from 200 to 250 W, the size of the pyramidal texture structure increased from 0.45 to 0.8 ㎛. The SERS response characteristics were measured by depositing approximately 1.5 ㎛ of nanoporous Ag metal thin film through cluster sputtering on the formed texture structure by varying the RIE process conditions. The Raman signal strength of the nanoporous Ag metal thin film deposited on the Si substrate with the texture structure was higher than that deposited on the general silicon substrate by up to 19%. The Raman response characteristics were influenced by the pyramid size and the number of pyramids per unit area but appeared to be influenced more by the number of pyramids per unit area. Therefore, further studies are required in this regard.

  • Vibrational micro-forming of pyramidal shape patterns was conducted for an Al superplastic alloy, Al 5083 and a Zr-based bulk metallic glass, $Zr_{62}Cu_{17}Ni_{13}Al_8$. A vibrational micro-forming system was specially designed for generating vibrational load by combining a PZT actuator with a signal generator. Single crystal Si micro dies with wet-etched pyramidal patterns were used as master dies for vibrational micro-forming. The micro-formed pattern height was increasing with increasing the frequency of the vibrational load. In particular, the vibrationally-microformed pattern height was similar or even higher than the statically-microformed pattern height when the load frequency exceeded about 125 kHz. It was also observed that the crystal grains affect the surface quality of the microformed pattern and the distribution of the pattern height in the die cavity array.

  • The image-based 3D modeling is the technique of generating a 3D graphic model from images acquired using cameras. It is being researched as an alternative technique for the expensive 3D scanner. In this paper, I propose the image-based 3D modeling system using calibrated camera. The proposed algorithm for rendering 3D model is consisted of three steps, camera calibration, 3D shape reconstruction and 3D surface generation step. In the camera calibration step, I estimate the camera matrix for the image aquisition camera. In the 3D shape reconstruction step, I calculate 3D volume data from silhouette using pyramidal volume intersection. In the 3D surface generation step, the reconstructed volume data is converted to 3D mesh surface. As shown the result, I generated relatively accurate 3D model.

  • Objectives : In conditions of brain infarction, irreversible axon damage occurs in the central nerve system (CNS), because gliosis becomes a physical and a mechanical barrier to axonal regeneration. Reactive gliosis induced by ischemic injury such as middle cerebral artery occlusion is involved with up-regulation of GFAP and CD81. This study was undertaken to examine the effect of the Gongjin-dan (GJD) on CD81 and GFAP expression and its pathway in the rat brain following middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Methods : In order to study ischemic injuries on the brain, infarction was induced by MCAO using insertion of a single nylon thread, through the internal carotid artery, into a middle cerebral artery. Cresyl violet staining, cerebral infarction size measurement, immunohistochemistry and microscopic examination were used to detect the expression of CD81 and GFAP and the effect on the infarct size and pyramidal cell death in the brain of the rat with cerebral infarction induced by MCAO. Also, c-Fos and ERK expression were measured to investigate the signaling pathway after GJD administration in MCAO rats. Results : Measuring the size of cerebral infarction induced by MCAO in the rat after injection of GJD showed the size had decreased. GJD administration showed pyramidal cell death protection in the hippocampus in the MCAO rat. GJD administration decreased GF AP expression in the MCAO rat. GJD administration decreased CD81 expression in the MCAO rat. GJD administration induced up-regulation of c-FOS expression compared with MCAO. GJD administration induced down-regulation of ERK expression compared with MCAO. Conclusion : We observed that GJD could suppress the reactive gliosis, which disturbs the axonal regeneration in the brain of a rat with cerebral infarction after MCAO by controlling the expression of CD81 and GFAP. The effect may be modulated by the regulation of c-Fos and ERK. These results suggest that GJD can be a candidate to regenerate CNS injury.

  • This paper describes a new feature based tracking system that can track moving objects with a pan-tilt camera. We extract corner features of the scene and tracks the features using filtering, The global motion energy caused by camera movement is eliminated by finding the maximal matching position between consecutive frames using Pyramidal template matching. The region of moving object is segmented by clustering the motion trajectories and command the pan-tilt controller to follow the object such that the object will always lie at the center of the camera. The proposed system has demonstrated good performance for several video sequences.
