Aerodynamic flow control phenomena were investigated with a low-current DC surface discharge plasma actuator. The plasma actuator was found to operate in three different discharge modes with similar discharge currents of about 1 mA or less. Stable continuous DC discharge without audible noise was obtained at higher ballast resistances and lower discharge currents. However, even with continuous DC power input, a low-frequency self-pulsed discharge was obtained at lower ballast resistances, and a high-frequency self-pulsed discharge was obtained at higher set-point currents and higher ballast resistances, both with audible noise. The Schlieren image reveals that the low-frequency self-pulsed mode produces a synthetic jet-like flow implying that a gas heating effect plays a role, even though the discharge current is small. The high-frequency self-pulsed mode produces pulsed jets in a tangent direction, and the continuous DC mode produces a steady straight pressure wave. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) images reveal that the induced flow field by the low-frequency self-pulsed mode has flow propagating in the radial direction and centered between the electrodes. The high-frequency self-pulsed mode and continuous DC mode produce flow from the anode to the cathode. The perturbed region downstream of the cathode is larger in the high-frequency self-pulsed mode with similar maximum speeds.
Background: Although many clinicians know about the reducing effects of the pulsed and low-dose modes for fluoroscopic radiation when performing interventional procedures, few studies have quantified the reduction of radiation-absorbed doses (RADs). The aim of this study is to compare how much the RADs from a fluoroscopy are reduced according to the C-arm fluoroscopic modes used. Methods: We measured the RADs in the C-arm fluoroscopic modes including 'conventional mode', 'pulsed mode', 'low-dose mode', and 'pulsed + low-dose mode'. Clinical imaging conditions were simulated using a lead apron instead of a patient. According to each mode, one experimenter radiographed the lead apron, which was on the table, consecutively 5 times on the AP views. We regarded this as one set and a total of 10 sets were done according to each mode. Cumulative exposure time, RADs, peak X-ray energy, and current, which were viewed on the monitor, were recorded. Results: Pulsed, low-dose, and pulsed + low-dose modes showed significantly decreased RADs by 32%, 57%, and 83% compared to the conventional mode. The mean cumulative exposure time was significantly lower in the pulsed and pulsed + low-dose modes than in the conventional mode. All modes had pretty much the same peak X-ray energy. The mean current was significantly lower in the low-dose and pulsed + low-dose modes than in the conventional mode. Conclusions: The use of the pulsed and low-dose modes together significantly reduced the RADs compared to the conventional mode. Therefore, the proper use of the fluoroscopy and its C-arm modes will reduce the radiation exposure of patients and clinicians.
The characteristics of voltage drop and THD for parallel operating 11 PCRs (Phase Controlled Rectifiers) are analysed. The PCRs are used to drive high current (1.6 kA ${\sim}$ 3.7 kADC) electromagnetic coils for electromagnets. All the PCRs operate simultaneously in pulsed mode, and the pulse shot occurs every 150 seconds. During the pulse operation the PCR output current ramps up for 4 seconds, and then keeps flat top state for 2 seconds, and finally ramps down for 4 seconds. For the flat top mode a severe voltage drop and distortion appear in the power system because transformers for the PCRs are designed considering pulsed mode operation. It is expected that the analysis method can be applied to improve the system performance including power factor and design of high power pulsed mode operating power supply systems.
The advantages of the $CO_2$ laser are offset by the delay in laser wound healing secondary to thermal damage. To minimize the undesirable thermal damage of the $CO_2$ laser, investigators have developed technical advances in the delivery system of the laser energy. This study compared tissue healing of the continuous and the pulsed modes $CO_2$ laser wounds in an animal surgery model. Five healthy Landrace and Yorkshire mixed breeds of both genders were used (45-51 kg, 4-6 months old, three males and two females). A full thickness wound of skin ($2{\times}2{\times}2cm^2$) was made over on the each pig's both sides of dorsal midline at 0, 7, 14, and 18 days. The wounds created at 18, 14, 7 and 0 days were named post-wounding day (PWD) 3, 7, 14 and 21, respectively. In each pig, one wound (left side) was treated pulsed $CO_2$ laser and the other wound (right side) was treated continuous wave $CO_2$ laser. Each wound was closed with two interrupted suture of 3-0 sutures. At 21 days after initial wounding, each wound was taken for histological evaluations. The degrees of reepithelialization were performed more prominently in the pulsed mode group than in the continuous mode group. The degrees of granulation were greater significantly in pulsed mode group than those in the continuous mode on PWD 3 (p < 0.05). The degrees of fibroblasts in the pulsed mode group were greater significantly in comparison to those in the continuous mode group on PWD 7, (p < 0.05). In conclusion, reepithelialization, granulation and fibroblasts in the pulsed mode group were greater markedly in comparison to those in the continuous mode group. It was considered that pulsed mode $CO_2$ laser was more suitable for the skin incision than the continuous mode $CO_2$ laser.
Submerged implants require secondary surgical uncovering of implants after healing period of 3-6 months. In surgical methods, there are surgical scalpel, tissue punch, electro-surgical, and laser-used uncovering, and so forth The objectives of this study are investigation and assessment of 1) thermal change in clinical application for uncovering of HA-coated implant and pure titanium implant irradiated by pulsed Nd-YAG, $CO_2$, and Er-YAG laser. 2) surface change of cover screws aaer irradiation using laser energy. The temperature of apex & side wall of implants were recorded at 10sec, 20sec, 30sec after 30sec irradiation to implant healing screw; 1) pulsed Nd-YAG laser; 2W, 20pps, contact mode 2) $CO_2$ laser; water-infused & non-water infused state, 2.5-3.5W, contibuous mode, noncontact mode 3) $CO_2$ laser ; non-water infused state, 3W, superpulse, noncontact. mode 4) Er-YAG laser; (1) non-water infused state, 10pps, 60mj, contact mode (2) water-infused state, 10pps, 60mj, 80mj, 101mj, contact mode. According to the results of this study, pulsed Nd-YAG laser is not indicated because of increased thermal change and pitting of metal surface of implant cover screw. By contrast, $CO_2$ laser & Er-YAG laser are presumed to indicate because of narrow range of thermal change & near abscence of thermal damage of metal surface. Dental laser is thought to be much helpful to surgical procedure when it is used as optimal power and time condition considering characteristics and indications of each laser. Further research is needed to verify that these techniques are safe and beneficial to implant success.

Dual mode resonators were fabricated using high temperature superconductor. The deposited material was $Y_1Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(YBCO) on MgO(100) substrate using pulsed laser deposition. Dual mode resonators were patterned by standard photolithography process and wet etching. At the back-side of the substrate, the ground plane with the metal layer of Ti and Ag was fabricated. The transition temperatures of YBCO films were 85-88 K, and network analyzer was used for testing the performance of the resonators. The input/output feedline angles of each resonator were $60^{\circ}$and $100^{\circ}$. The resonant frequency of resonators was 10 GHz. In this paper, dual mode resonator was fabricated for the application of satellite communication.
Metal film type of resistor have been tested to invest maximum usable power at the pulsed high voltage and pulsed high current. Experiments were carried out using capacitor charging power supply and dump switch. Pulsed amplitude were varied from 1kV to 25kV. The peak current reached was 1kA. Datasheet are given for the limited pulsed power and energy for metal film type of resistor in nanosecond and microsecond time range. The experimental investigation of the threshold loading of the resistor in the high current and voltage pulsed mode has shown that the process of destruction of resistor has specific features for each mode. The mechanisms of failure and destruction of resistors under action of high-voltage and high-current pulses are discussed.

An airborne radar is an essential aviation electronic system of the helicopter to perform various missions in all-weather environments. This paper presents the conceptual design results of the multi-mode pulsed Doppler radar system testbed model for helicopter. Due to the inherent flight nature of the hovering vehicle which is flying in low-altitude and low speed, as well as rapid maneuvering, the moving clutters from the platform should be suppressed by using a special MTD (Moving Target Detector) processing. For the multi-mode radar system model design, the flight parameters of the moving helicopter platform were assumed: altitude of 3 Km, average cruising velocity of 150knots. The multi-mode operation capability was applied such as short-range, medium-range, and long-range depending on the mission of the vehicle. The nominal detection ranges is 30 Km for the testbed experimental model, but can be expanded up to 75 Km for the long range weather mode. The detection probability of each mode is also compared in terms of the signal-to noise ratio of each mode, and the designed radar system specifications ate provided as a design results.

This paper presents a new motion detector that has a bubble-layer detection zone using a pulsed-mode oscillator and delay line. The proposed motion detector controls the bubble-layer detection zone with pulse width of transmitted signals and creates IF signals only by reflected signals from the target within the detection zone whose position is determined by time delay of the delay line. The fabricated motion detector uses the pulsed-mode voltage controlled oscillator as a signal source which has a center frequency of 8 GHz, pulse width of 2 nsec and pulse period of 30 nsec. It successfully makes the bubble-layer detection zones at 1 m, 3 m and 5 m distant from itself using two delay lines with 7 nsec and 12 nsec delay, and is also demonstrated to detect the target within the detection zones.
