  • A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser with a Z-folded cavity, which was pumped by a freqeuncy-doubled Nd:YAG laser, was developed. It shows 120 nm wavelength tuning range from 740 nm to 860 nm with 90 nm FWHM under a pumping energy of 3 mJ with 18% output coupler. Using a birefringent filter, the effective efficiency was improved about 10 times compare to without a birefringent filter. The output energy obtained was $\365mu$Jwith 4 nm FWHM. And the wavelength tuning range was broadened to about 160 nm within an output energy fluctuation of $\pm$10%.

  • Photochemical defluorination and substitution of fluorocarbon-resin surfaces using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser(266 nm) and copper-sulfate$(CuSO_4)$ aqueous solution were discussed. Interface of copper nuclei and fluorocabon-resin was chemically bonded through oxygen which was photodissociated from water in copper-sulfate aqueous solution under the laser irradiation. The reaction mechanism for chemical surface modification is discussed on the basis of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscope analyses.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation on human gingival tissues. The patients, who were planned to be treated by clinical crown lengthening procedure and gingivectomy, were selected. All the patients received oral hygiene instruction, scaling and root planing at preoperation. The crest of gingival tissue on upper and lower anterior teeth was irradiated by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser(El. EN. EN060, Italy) with a fiber optic of 300 m in contact mode for 20 seconds. Gingival tissues were divided into 4 groups according to the laser power of 1.0W(10Hz, 100mJ), 2.0W(20Hz, 100mJ), 3.0W(30Hz, 100mJ) and 4.0W(40Hz, 100mJ). Immediately after the laser irradiation, the specimens were excised, fixed 10% neutral formalin, sectioned $4-6{\mu}m$ thick, stained by Hematoxylin-Eosin and Periodic Acid Schiff stain and observed under light microscope. The removed tissue depth and the coagulated layer depth due to a laser irradiation by a laser irradiation were measured on the microphotographs. The difference of measurements according to the different laser power was statistical1y analyzed by Kruskal Wallis Test with SAS program. The results were as follows : 1. In histologic findings of irradiated gingival tissues; a. In the irradiated gingival specimen with 1.0W laser power, some vesicles were observed in limited superficial layer of gingival epithelium. b. In the irradiated gingival specimen with 2.0W and 3.0W laser power, the epithelium was almost removed except for the traces of viable basal cell remnants at ret peg, and coagulation necrosis related with the thermal effect of laser was noted. c. In the irradiated gingival specimen with 4.0W laser power, complete removal of epithelium, partial removal of underlying connective tissue, and the coagulation necrosis of subjacent gingival tissue were shown. 2. The removed tissue depth was deeper in the irradiated specimens with higher power. There was a statistical significance in the difference of removed tissue depth between 1.0W group ($44.54{\pm}6.99um$) and 3.0W group ($99.75{\pm}6.64{\mu}m$), and between 1.0W group($44.54{\pm}6.99{\mu}m$) and 4.0W group($111.36{\pm}4.50{\mu}m$), and between 2.0W group($98.01{\pm}4.53{\mu}m$) and 4.0W group($111.36{\pm}4.50{\mu}m$)(P<0.05). 3. The coagulated layer depth was deeper in the irradiated specimens with higher power. There was a statistical significance in the difference of coagulated layer depth between 1.0W group($31.82{\pm}8.99{\mu}m$) and 3.0W group($55.99{\pm}20.94{\mu}m$), and between 1.0W group($31.82{\pm}8.99{\mu}m$) and 4.0W group($83.68{\pm}10.34{\mu}m$)(P<0.05). From this study, the results demonstrated that the effects of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation on gingival tissues seemed to depend on the laser power and that the irradiation with high power could be harmful to adjacent healthy tissue.

  • Enhancement of pulsed-laser ablation by an artificially deposited liquid film is presented. Measurements of ablation rate, ablation threshold, and surface topography arc performed. Correlation between material ablation and photoacoustic effect is examined by the optical beam deflection method. The dependence of ablation rate on liquid-film thickness and chemical composition is also examined. The results indicate that photomechanical effect in the phase explosion of liquid is responsible for the enhanced ablation. The low critical temperature of liquid induces explosive vaporization with localized photoacoustic excitation in the superheat limit and increases the ablation efficiency. Experiments were carried out utilizing a Q-swiched Nd:YAG laser at near-threshold laser fluences with negligible plasma effect (up to ∼100 MW/cm$^2$).

  • The Author examined the clinical and histological changes on the dorsal tongue mucosa of the adult rats after lasing by pulsed Nd:YAG laser and incising with scalpel. The dorsal tongue was lased through 320$\mu\textrm{m}$optic fiber moving 2.5mm/second to make linear incision 5mm. The five conditions of lasing were three application with 1.0W, 1.75W, 3.0W and 3.0W under saline cooling, and single application with 3.0W at 20Hz. With scalpel, linear incisions through the surface epithelium were performed to 5mm in length. After observing the clinical changes of the incised wounds, the animals were sacrified and the tissues were excised to make the tissue specimens. The stained microscopic tissue slide were observed histologically under the microscope. The following results were obtained : 1. While incision with scalpel causes severe bleeding, lasing does not cause bleeding. 2. In three applications with 1.75W and 20Hz, tissue ablation was limited to areas contacted with optic fiber. 3. In three applications with 3.0W and 20Hz, deep incised wound, extensive destruction of the adjacent epithelium and charring were observed. 4. In three applications with 3.0W and 20Hz under saline cooling, tissue ablation was limite to the superficial mucosa and charring was not observed. 5. In single application with 3.0W and 20Hz, the shape of the incised wound was similar to that of the scalpel incision.

  • SmCo films were deposited on Si(100) substrate by a Nd-YAG pulsed laser ablation of the targets of Sm$\_$100-x/Co$\_$x/ (73$\leq$x$\leq$93) at the substrate temperature of 600∼700$\^{C}$ and the laser beam energy density of Q switching mode or fixed Q mode. The magnetic properties of the films obtained from the Q switching mode exhibited a 4 $\pi$ Ms of 5200∼7700 Gauss, iHc of 190-250 Oe, and 4$\pi$M$\_$r//4$\pi$M$\_$s/ of 0.4∼0.74, respectively, while the fixed Q mode gave the magnetic properties of corresponding films of a 4$\pi$M$\_$r//4$\pi$M$\_$s/ = 0.32∼0.91 and iHc of 430-6290 Oe, respectively. The fixed Q mode gave the better magnetic properties of the SmCo films which seems to be due to a formation of magnetically hard minor phases in droplet of Sm-rich intermetallics. However, the resultant rough surface of the SmCo films is a problem to be solved by a continued study.

  • In recent years, concern has been raised about the technique of controlling electrical breakdown by using laser in many fields. Especially, laser has attracted much attention in the Electro-Discharge Macining(EDM) because of its many merits. Therefore, this research has been performed to obtain fundamental data relevant to discharge processing by using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The experiments of laser-guided dc discharge by laser radiation have been carried out at low air pressure ranging from 0.2 to 20 torr. The minimum laser-guided dc discharge voltage V\ulcorner at the given pressures P and distances D between an anode and a cathode was measured. It is found that the minimum laser-guided dc discharge voltage is much lower than the natural discharge voltage V\ulcorner\ulcorner, and the values of V\ulcorner and V\ulcorner as a function of P.D has a similar tendency. The laser output energy Eout decreases with input pulse duration tp increasing, and the more the value of tp increases, the higher that of V\ulcorner is obtained because the number of photons during the discharge time N decreases with t\ulcorner increasing. There is the time lag frequently when the discharge by laser radiation is misguided under the condition of the applied voltage less than V_G.min.
