  • The combustion characteristics using forced pulsating flow were experimentally investigated with confined premixed flames stabilized by a reward-facing step. The intermittent combustion has many merits, for instance, such as high load combustion, high heat transfer, low emission gas, compared with those of continuous combustion. For these purposes, data processing of binary image was conducted to reveal the differences between intermittent and continuous combustion. As the results, it was possible to calculate the reaction zone using OH-emission band and, therefore, showed that forced pulsating flow was useful in combustion technology.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a cooler/heater using a thermoelectric module combined with a parallel flow type pulsating heat pipe with R-142b as a working fluid. The experiment was performed for 16 thermoelectric modules (6A/15V, size: $40\times40\times4mm$), varying design parameters of the heat pipe (inclination angle, working fluid charging ratio, etc.). Experimental results indicate that the optimum charging ratio and the inclination angle of the parallel flow type pulsating heat pipe were $30\%$ by volume and $30^{\circ}$, respectively. The maximum cooler/heater capacity were 479 W (COP: 0.47) and 630 W (COP: 0.9), respectively.

  • For in-depth research of blood flow, it is important to create pulsating flow like the blood flow from heart beat. In this study, we developed a heart mimicking pulsatile pump and evaluated its performances. Main body of pump was produced using a piston pump, and its rpm and duty ratio was modulated by DC motor and encoder. To determine the part dimensions, principle stress theory and simple fluidic pressure analysis were used. The performance of pulsating pump was evaluated by comparing the pressure values and their deviations according to experimental variables. For the results, the output value of pressure followed the distribution of pulsating flow and its deviation was negligible. Through this study, we expect the established pulsating pump can be widely used in study of blood flow produce easy ways to related researchers.

  • The characteristics of the pulsating flow in a hydraulic pipe have been investigated. It is necessary to study the power control of the power transmission system in the landing gear system of aircraft and the design of robots. In this system, the power transmission pipeline is composed of a hydraulic system, and the operating flow is unsteady flow. The wave equation varying with frequency is analyzed in order to investigate the characteristics of unsteady flow in such a pipe. This wave equation involves the propagation coefficient in terns of frequency and viscosity. The theoretical result of this wave equation are compared with experimental result. Each wave equation, varying with the propagation coefficient, is analyzed theoretically. then, a sinusoidal wave generator is built in order to make better sinusoidal waves, and a rectifier is built to eliminate the noise from the hydraulic pump. The theoretical results of the wave equation in the flow of viscous fluid agree well with experimental results.

  • In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent pulsating flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct were experimentally investigated. Experimental studies for air flows were conducted to measure axial velocity and wall shear stress distributions and entrance length in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV with the data acquisition and the processing system. The experiment was conducted in seven sections from the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) at $30^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct. The results obtained from the experimentation were summarized as follows ; (1) When the ratio of velocity amplitude ($A_1$) was less than one, there was hardly any velocity change in the section except near the wall and any change in axial velocity distributions along the phase. When the ratio of velocity amplitude ($A_1$) was 0.6, the change rate of velocity was slow. (2) Wall shear stress distributions of turbulent pulsating flow were similar to those of turbulent steady flow. The value of the wall shear stress became minimum in the inner wall aid gradually increased toward the outer wall where it became maximum. (3) The entrance length of turbulent pulsating flow reached near the region of bend angle of $90^{\circ}$, like that of turbulent steady flow. The entrance length was changed by the dimensionless angular frequency (${\omega}^+$).

  • The left ventricular filling flow is now considered as an indicator which can be used for early diagnosing of cardiovascular diseases. Because the understanding of left ventricular flow physics is critical for this purpose, the downstream flow characteristics of the artificial heart valve are investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. In this study, we investigated the wake characteristics of flows passing through three different artificial valves (St.Jude medical bileaflet mechanical valve. Bjork-Shiley monostrut mechanical valve and St.Jude medical Biocor bio valve). The downstream flow field has remarkably altered according to the different valves. SJM MHV has the flow field similar to the pulsating circular jet and BS MHV has oblique pulsating jet. SJM BHV shows the similar flow field of clinical data of normal heart.

  • Vibration and noise problem in a hydraulic system became one of very important factors in evaluating the performance of a hydraulic system. It is known that vibration and noise in a hydraulic system is directly related to flow pulsation in the hydraulic pump in the system. This study investigated a modeling and simulation technique for pulsating flow in a swash plate type axial piston pump. The key design factors of the pump related to flow pulsation phenomenon of the pump are the physical parameters for notches on the valve plate of the pump. By the numerical analysis, effects of the physical parameters of the notch on the flow pulsation was elucidated.

  • An experimental study of thermal transport from a uniformly heated pipe to a pulsating flow has been carried out. Surface of the pipe is imposed with constant heat flux providing by electric heating band. This problem is of particular interest in the design of Stirling engine heat exchangers and in understanding the blood flow in the aorta. Temporal Variatiens of temperature and pressure inside the circular pipe are measured. The dependence of temperature distributions and heat transfer rate on the mean flow rate in the pipe and on the pulsating frequency is investigated in detail. The experimental results indicate that the measured temporal variations of temperature and pressure become nearly sinusoidal The amplitude of temperature variation near the pipe wall is much more substantial than that in core of the pipe. It is also found that the heat transfer rate is increased significantly as the frequency of the pulsating pressure is increased or the mean flow rate in a pipe is increased. The results obtained are also compared with those for non-pulsating flow circumstance.

  • Turbocharging is becoming a key technology for both diesel and gasoline engines. Regarding gasoline engines, turbocharging can help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when used in conjunction with other technologies. This paper presents measurements of the turbine efficiency of pulsating flow in a twin-scroll turbocharger for gasoline engines. A cold gas test bench with a pulse generator was manufactured. The turbine efficiencies were calculated using the measured data of the instantaneous pressure and temperature of the inlet and exit of the turbine. The measurements were carried out at turbine speeds from 60,000 to 100,000 rpm under a pulsating flow of 25.0 Hz and 33.0 Hz. The turbine efficiencies ranged from 0.517 to 0.544. At the pulse frequency, 33.3 Hz, the variations in efficiency were 7.7% and 2.6% at turbine speeds of 60,000 rpm and 100,000 rpm, respectively. The turbine efficiency of the pulsating flow compared to those of steady flow was 7.0% and 3.0% lower at a turbine speed of 60,000 rpm and 100,000 rpm, respectively. The pulsating flow deteriorated the turbine efficiency, but the effects of pulsating flow decreased with increasing turbine speed.
