Xylans are polysaccharides present in large amounts in cell walls of land plants. However, during kraft cooking, a high portion of hemicelluloses including xylans are dissolved in the cooking liquor. In the current trend for a more effective utilization of biomass, attention has been paid to the exploitation of xylans as strength-enhancing additives for paper. It is believed that surface xylan adds flexibility to the cell wall/fiber surface, resulting in stronger fiber-fiber joints or greater contact area between the fibers. Accordingly, there is proposal for a new pulping process involving the extraction of xylan prior to pulping, followed by their re-adsorption on the unbleached pulp. A suitable bleaching process should be employed then, which ought to does not only improve the brightness of the pulp, but also remain the effect of the adsorption of xylan on pulp fibers. The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on the properties of unbleached hardwood kraft pulp pretreated with birchwood xylan by measuring optical properties (brightness, post color number, opacity) as well as physical properties (tensile index, tearing index, bulk) of handsheets made from the bleached pulp. In the meantime, the influence of process variables of peroxide bleaching including bleaching temperature, time, initial pH and $MgSO_4$ dosage were studied.
To separate and utilize the main components of hardwood (Quercus mongolica) by organosov pulping (ester pulping), chips were cooked at various conditions such as; the solvent ratio (acetic acid: ethylacetate: water, 50:25:25; 33:33:34; 25:50:25), maximum temperature (165, 170, $175^{\circ}C$), and cooking times (2, 2.5, 3 hr). The pulps were bleached by the sequences of CEDED, C/DEDED, PEDED. Lignin, sugars, and acetic acid were separated from black liquor and washing liquors. 1. The selective delignification at optimal pulp yield (43-45%) was obtained by cooking at acetic acid: ethylace tate: water ratio of 33:34:34 for 3 hr at $170^{\circ}C$. But in this case, kappa no. of the pulp was not reduced under 60 points. 2. Kappa no. of the pulp could be dropped by an acetone wash to remove reprecipitated lignin a t cooked pulp. 3. The unbleached pulps had a brightness of 45-50%, whereas the bleached pulps gave at 88-93% brightness. Tensile, burst, and tear strengths of the bleached pulps were lower than those of kraft pulp, especially in tear strength. The pulps which were bleached with CEDED sequence were higher in strengths than another bleaching sequences. 4. Lignin of 90-95%(lignin base on wood)was separated from black liquor and washing liquors, while the purified sugars and recovery of acetic acid were a low. An organic phase composed of acetic acid, ethylacetate, and water was separated to a two-phase system by proper adjustment of the solvent ratios.
Fig. 8 summarizes the present status of high yield pulp production and the directions of research on modification. A thick line indicates pulping process presently in use. As mentioned previously, one kind of modification is to introduce hydrophilic groups onto the pulp. Still unsolved is whether or not the introduction of hydrophilic groups should be restricted to lignin only. Goring (28) reported that middle lamella lignin has fewer phenolic hydroxyl groups than cell wall lignin and suggested that such a difference in the lignin may be useful in the removal of middle lamella lignin. The introduction of hydrophilic groups onto pulp may not be enough to modify high yield pulp. The removal of some portion of carbohydrate may be also necessary from the standpoint of softening of pulp fibers. There is no information at what lignin and carbohydrate, and how much should be removed. The combination with synthetic high polymers may also be important in modifying high yield pulp. Prof. C. Schuerch of the State University of New York who was a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo in 1974, mentioned that the hydrophilicity of lignin would be promoted, if phenolic hydroxyl or carboxyl groups could be introduced into the aromatic nucleus of lignin. If this were possible. this process would also mean a pulp yield of more than 100%. This idea is just one example of the expectation made possible through lignin chemistry. Instead of the introduction of hydrophilic group, the oxidative degradation of aromatic nucleus of lignin may also be useful in promoting the hydrophilicity of pulp. In this case, ozone may be an excellent chemical. However, there are a lot of problems to be solved such as homogeneity of reaction and selectivity of ozone for lignin. The above ideas are summarized in Fig. 9. There are many problems to be solved in the production of an excellent high yield pulp which is comparable to chemical pulp. The information from wood chemistry hopefully will elucidate some of the problems mentioned above.
The function of the moisture-proof paper is to prevent moisture from adsorbing into the packed goods. Water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper should be less than 100g/$m^2$.24hr and the optimum rate would be less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. The purpose of this paper was to make moisture-proof paper using the mixture of SB latex and wax emulsion which was recyclable and environmentally friendly. Water vapor transmission rate showed less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr in mixture ratio of 85:15, 87:13, 90:10. Especially the mixture ratio of 87:13 showed the most favorable water-vapor transmission rate. However, the moisture-proof layer was destroyed slightly by folding in packing. It has been observed that there was no close relationship between water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper and grammage of the base paper, but the density of base paper had influenced on water vapor transmission rate. It was also observed that the moisture-proof paper could be recycled. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of the pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particles which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping were measured to examine the fiber bonding, and no significant difference in physical properties was observed.
There are two kinds of cartons for beverage packaging, one is aseptic brick (AB) type and the other is gable top (GT). In this study, AB and GT were used as a raw material of recycled paper to investigate the recyclability at their varied blending ratios. Fiber consistency at pulping decreased as the blending ratio of AB increased. As a result, a lot of fines were generated from AB and flakes from GT increased because shear force in pulper decreased. Bulk of handsheets was more than $2.0cm^3/g$, and ISO brightness decreased as the blending ratio of AB increased. The best condition to recycle beverage cartons is to discriminate each cartons separately because of differences in the composition. However, there are problems such as the limit of the collection system and social costs. Therefore, it is assumed that the blending ratios of AB should be adjusted at less than 20% for effective recycling of beverage cartons.
Biological deinking process of used papers was studied by the polymer modified cellulase. Cellulase was modified with copolymers which consist of polyoxyethylene derivative and maleic anhydride(MA). The MA functional groups of copolymer can react with amino acids groups of the cellulase without much loss of activity. Modified degree of amino acids was controlled by the added copolymer. The maximum modified degree was about 60% and it was obtained when the weight ratio of copolymer and cellulase was 4. The remained activity of the maximum modified cellulase(MMC) was higher than 80% of native cellulase. The MMC's concentration was 0.05-2.0 wt% relative to the dry paper. In mechanical pulping process, cellulase enhanced the detachment of the ink particle from the used paper by partial hydrolysis of the fiber. The polyoxyethylene of modified cellulase produced the forms which can float the separated ink particle. Compared to the convention deinking method with NaOH or organic chemicals, the new biological deinnking process improved the physical properties such as freeness, tearing strength and whiteness.
Com stalk was evaluated to verify the potential as a raw material for papermaking. The lower lignin content and higher hemicelluloses content of cornstalk than any woods were considered to be beneficial for pulping and strength properties of paper. The average fiber length of com stalk was similar to those of hardwood, but longer fiber fraction is little bit included. It was found that the refining of pulp can be eliminated because of higher hemicelluloses content and narrower fiber characteristic. Disadvantages of cornstalk pulp were lower bulk and opacity, but it can be overcome by the proper use of wood pulp and filler.
Bastard indigo, prevailing shrub species planted in erosion control work to constitute vegetation, is proved to be usefull for pulp material other than existing usage of green manure or fuel. Pulp made from bastard indigo is good enough for filler pulp though the quality of it is not remarkably excellent. (1) Sorts of paper possible to make from this pulp. Packing paper of medium grade. (general packing paper except heavy packing) (2) Traits of this pulp as for pulp material (A) It is more preferable than annual plants in these respects, ego collection, transport and storage of pulp material, and yield, freeness and chemical consumption of pulp. (B) Annual probable production of pulp material per ha from this plant is higher than that from long-term tree species or similar to that from fast growing species. (C) Its cultivation on eroded area is welcomed and consecutive annual production of material by copice method is also proved possible.
Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) was made from oil palm trunk (OPT) with soda-anthraquinone pulping, chlorine dioxide bleaching, carboxymethylation, followed by mechanical grinding. Size of this CNF was 16-40 nm of width confirmed by TEM. To evaluate CNF from OPT as cosmetics raw materials for moisturizing component, water holding properties was compared with hyaluronic acid and collagen. CNF from OPT had better water holding property than collagen or hyaluronic acid whether phenoxyethanol was added as antiseptic or without additive.
Tobacco stalks are greatly produced as annual agricultural wastes. These residues are available approximately 70,000 tons per year. This study was performed to evaluate the potentials of tobacco stalks as a new resource for reconstituent tobacco sheet. Tobacco stalk was more lignified than cereal straws, and had similar chemical constituents to hardwood. Pulping yields by cooling at 170$^{\circ}C$ of dry and green tobacco stalks were 56.7% and 66.3% , respectively. Around 50$^{\circ}$SR freeness level of mixed pulp was adjusted by mixing more than 10% chemical pulp9CP) in the case of dry tobacco stalk and more than 15% CP with wet one. By immersing this handsheet in extracted cooking liquors, reconsitutent sheet contained about 0.28% of nicotines could be prepared. This sheet had enough strength properties for cigarette paper making . In conclusion, it was proved that tobacco stalk could be used to produce the reconstituent tobacco sheet.
