This study was carried out to investgate the possiblity of using waste bamboo and bast fiber from paper mulberry for Hwaseonji production. 3 types of Hwaseonji were made in an experimental system, 100% bamboo pulp, bamboo pulp mixed with bast fiber in two different ratios, 70% : 30% and 40% : 60%, respectively. The result were as follows: 1. The chinese ink blots of Hwaseonji made from bamboo pulp only was satisfactory, but its tensile strength showed a low value. In order to improve the tensile strength, we must develope a new beating method with musilige. 2. The burst strength increased as the bast fiber content increased. But it is a special characteristic of Hwaseonji, that an even formation of paper is required. Therefore, only the short bast fiber is needed. 3. The tensile strength was raised by increasing the bast fiber content to 60%, resulting in a more durable Hwaseonji. 4. In even thickness, the higher opacity showed the more bast fiber. So the opacity of product III (bamboo: 40%, bast fiber: 60%) is the highest. 5. The commodity value of hand-made paper should be grade-up after a dedusting process.
The CLSM and the image analysis technique enhanced observation of fiber wall fibrillation occurred in both the outer and the fiber wall surfaces during refining by non-destructive techniques. In the early stages of refining, it was well observed that a partial separation between the S1 and S2 layer in the secondary wall was made generating a space in the wet fiber walls . With further refining, it was clearly shown that the shear forces imparted by the refiner bar surfaces caused the S1 layer to become totally separated from the S2 layer as well as creating microfibrils. Furthermore, the fibrillation in the inner fiber wall surfaces could be due to the normal force (Fn) by refiner bars, friction force between a fiber and refiner bars (Fs) and inner friction force between fiber walls(fs). It was confirmed that the concept of fibrillation should be extended to fibrillation in the inner fiber wall surfaces as well as internal and external fribrillation.
Oriental painting paper (Hwaseonji) was prepared from various kinds of plant fibers and its physical properties were investigated. The fibers used were classified into three different length of fibers; long fiber (<1.8 mm), medium fiber (1.4-1.8 mm) and short fiber (>1.4 mm). The fibers were mixed in the ratio of 15% long fiber, 25% medium fiber and 60% short fiber. The Hwaseonji prepared from mixing of the bamboo or rice straw pulp as a short fiber with the long and medium fibers showed excellent physical properties with a high smoothness and uniformity of Chinese ink blot. Mixing with LBKP as a short fiber was resulted in low physical properties, smoothness and wide ink blot. The properties of Hwaseonji, such as ink absorption, roughness and smoothness, may be predicted from the correlation of density with Chinese ink blot and smoothness.
Tritium has been used to directly measure the exchangeable hydrogen in bleached softwood kraft pulp. The hydrogen atoms associated with hydroxyl groups in pulp or with water contained in the pulp can dissociate and exchange with the hydrogen atoms in bulk water. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen and behaves almost identically to it. The distribution of tritium between pulp and water ($k_{pw}$) can be easily measured and becomes an index of the protons available fur hydrogen bonding. Bleached kraft pulp was refined in a PFI mill to a range of freenesses. Tritiated water was added and the amount exchanged measured. There was a slight steady increase in $k_{pw}$ until approximately 300 CSF; $k_{pw}$ then rose sharply between 300 CSF and 100 CSF. This rise appears to correlate with FSP. It is likely that the action of refining on the fiber reaches a threshold at about 300 CSF causing the fiber surface to break open creating exponentially more surface area. This theory is visually confirmed through light microscopy. The slow increase in fibrillation of the fibers above 300 CSF correlates with the increase in $k_{pw}$. Beyond the threshold of 300 CSF a dramatic difference in fibrillation is shown, also corresponding with the large increase in $k_{pw}$. The freeness difference around 300 CSF is small, but the change in fiber properties is extreme within this region. This change in properties could lead to sheet breaks and other disruptions when producing products around the threshold. This study leads to a better understanding of how fiber changes during refining, resulting in a practical benefit of target freeness determination. Presently, freeness is selected based on product quality and on some measure of runnability. Yet, there are other considerations, demonstrated by the extreme change in fiber properties around 300 CSF.
Whole, bast and core fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 were pulped under different pulping methods, thermomechanical and kraft pulping methods. The physical and optical properties of kenaf TMP(thermomechanical pulp) and KP(kraft pulp) handsheets were investigated and the results from the study are summarized as follows: Yields of TMP and KP were $77{\sim}87%\;and\;43{\sim}52%$, respectively. There was no significant change in apparent density between kenaf KP and USKP(unbleached softwood kraft pulp) but TMP showed a little lower apparent density. Bast pulp had the lowest apparent density regardless of pulping methods. Tensile strength of kenaf KP was higher than that of TMP but similar to that of USKP. Both TMP and KP handsheets of bast fraction showed the highest tear strengths among whole, bast, and core fractions. Core fraction showed the lowest tear strengths under different pulping methods. In general burst strength of kenaf pulp under different pulping methods was lower than that of USKP, and kenaf pulp had better stiffness than USKP. Brightness of kenaf KP and TMP was higher than that of USKP. There was no significant variation in opacity between kenaf pulp and USKP even though kenaf pulp showed a little lower opacity. The main difference in paper quality between the core fiber and bast fiber is derived from the fact that bast fiber is long and thin, whereas core fiber is short and thick.
Various mechanical and chemical pretreatment methods including alkali treatment, pre-beating, enzyme treatment and oxidation treatment have been used to reduce the production energy of the microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). Among them, alkali swelling can be helpful to reduce the energy consumption because the internal bonding between fibrils could be weakened. In this study, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used as a cosolvent to improve alkali pretreatment efficiency and the effects of NaOH concentration during NaOH-DMSO swelling on changes in fiber characteristics of softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) were elucidated. For alkali treatment in H2O-DMSO solvents, fiber length were decreased with increasing NaOH concentration while fiber width, curl and WRV were increased. WRV began to increase at 8% NaOH solution. In addition, above 8% concentration of NaOH, crystalline structure of pulp fibers converted from cellulose II to cellulose III by DMSO cosolvent. Comparing the previous results with this study, it was shown that DMSO cosolvent could promote swelling of pulp fibers and thus reduce NaOH concentration for the maximum swelling of fibers.

Hanji is a traditional Korean handmade paper, made of bast fibers of the paper mulberry. Its fiber furnish is much more expensive than wood fiber furnish. Hanji with a low basis weight requires additional opacity and smoothness for better writing and printing. Filler such as calcium carbonate can not be used to raise the opacity of Hanji because of its low retention in low basis weight paper and the high freeness of the Hanji fiber furnish. Addition of red algae pulp, which is prepared from marine red algae to the Hanji fiber furnish negated retention problems happening in the case of mineral filler addition, and produced a substantial improvement in the opacity and smoothness of Hanji. The higher retention was due to the much larger size of the red algae fibers compared to the mineral fillers. The improvement in opacity and smoothness were also due to the shape of the red algae fibers: that red algae fibers are narrower in widths and shorter in lengths than wood fibers results in increased surface area and smoothness.
Anatomical and chemical properties of three mulberry species (Morus spp) were analyzed as an alternative row material for the paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki) . The pulping and papermaing characteristics of bast fiber and whole stalks by three different pulping processes, conventional alkali, alkali-hydrogen peroxide, and sulfomethylated, for the Hanji were investigated. The fiber dimension of M.bombycis was the biggest of the species. The fiber length of upper part and the fiber width and cell wall thickness of lower part were bigger than the others. The extractives and ash contents of bast fiber were higher than those of whole stalk , and holocellulose and lignin contents of whole stalk were higher than those of bast fiber. The pulp yields of M.alba bast fiber, M.bombycis whole stalk, and sufomethylated pulping were higher than the others.
The accelerated aging characteristics of electroconductive papers manufactured with a mixture of carbon fiber were investigated by heating in dry oven. By accelerated aging time, the tensile strength, tensile stretch of the papers were decreased more slowly with increase of carbon fiber content, but the electrical conductivity was more rapidly decreased in case of high carbon fiber content. The weight loss of papers by thermal analysis were reduced as increasing the carbon fiber content. These results were indicated that the electrical conductivity of carbon fiber was diminished easily by heat aging, but thermal characteristic of carbon fiber was much better than that of wood pulp.
