aluminum sulfate (alum) as a representative retention aid in papermaking processes was added to pulp suspensions, and the aluminum components adsorbed on the pulp were investigated quantitatively by two types of X-ray elementary analyses with regard to simultaneous changes of their surface charges. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XFA) were applied to determine the aluminum components retained in pulp pads up to ca. 10 nm and 100${\mu}$m depth, respectively. In other words, XPS was utilized to analyze the outermost surface layers of the samples, and XFA was available for measurement of their extensive regions. A particle charge detector (PCD) was used to monitor streaming potentials at various pHs of the pulp mixtures under moderate sharing conditions. At pH 4.5 of pulp suspensions containing alum, surface charges of pulp fibers varied from negative to slight negative (approximately neutral) according to adsorption of aluminum components onto the pulp fibers. Subsequently, when a dilute NaOH solution in limited amounts was added to pulp mixtures, both streaming potentials and surface aluminum content of the pulp fibers increased distinctly although little total aluminum retention increased. Further addition of alkali solutions brought drastic decreases of the surface charges and surface aluminum content, while total aluminum content, on the contrary, increased gradually under neutral conditions. These results indicate that residual aluminum ions remained in pulp suspensions are predominantly adsorbed on surfaces of pulp fibers by adequate alkali additions and they must sufficiently cationize the fiber surfaces with increases of somewhat cationic aluminum complexes formed on the surfaces. On the other hand, aluminum components formed in higher pH ranges have nearly no contribution to improvement of charge properties of the pulp fiber surfaces, even though aluminum retention in pulp pads increases. XPS and XFA analyses combined with streaming potential measurement using a PCD suggest close relationships between aluminum content on the pulp fiber surfaces and their charge properties.

It is well known that the recycling of pulp generates a lot of fines, and cause the hornification of fiber. Both phenomena have been contributed to a limited use of recycled fiber. Among several means which can improve the properties of recycled fiber, enzymatic treatments are considered as an effective means. Thus the effects of xylanase on the properties of recycled pulp were investigated in this study Xylanase treatment showed some refining effect at a small dosage while the fines and fibrils were reduced at higher dosage as shown in the treatment with cellulase-hemicellulase. The interesting finding is that the WRV of recycled fiber treated with xylanase was higher than that treated with the mixture of cellulase and hemicellulase. Breaking length and tear index of recycled fiber treated with xylanase were also higher.
Fines in high-yield sulfite pulp have much higher water retention value as compared with fines in Stone groundwood pulp. Therefore, they are apt to adhere partially or entirely onto the fiber surface during the paper making. This tendency is greatly enhance with decrease of the pretreated yield and increase of the water retention value of fines. Fines, which adhere onto the fiber surface in paper, contribute to the light scattering of the paper. Accordingly, the specific scattering coefficient of fines in high-yield sulfite pulp is considerably lower than that of fines in stone groundwood pulp, which hardly adhere onto the fiber surface. The fact that high-yield sulfite pulp is inferior to stone groundwood pulp in opacity is explained on the basis of the high degree of swelling of fined in addition to the softening of fiber fraction.

The utilization of non-woody fibers with the fast growing annual plants has occurred in the paper industry to replace wood and preserve environment of the earth. The non-woody fibers generally used for papermaking are paper mulberry, gampi, manila hemp, rice straw, bamboo, and coton linter etc.. Recently Kenaf has been spot-lighted for the same application. Kenaf is an annual plant of Hibiscus species of Malvaceae family. Kenaf, a rapid growing and high harvesting non-woody fiber plant, was identified as one of the promising fiber sources for the production of paper pulp. This study was carried out to investigate the pulping characteristics of Kenaf bast fiber for Hanji (traditional Korean paper) manufacturing by different pulping methods, such as alkali, alkali-peroxide and sulfomethylated pulpings. It was possible to make superior grade of Hanji. Especially sulfomethylated pulping was resulted in superior pulp in terms of higher yields and qualities in comparison to those of the other pulping methods. Hanji from sulfomethylated pulp was shown the highest brightness of over 60% and higher sheet strength. In addition, the morphological features of pulp fibers (pulp compositions) affect to the sheet properties. Therefore the effect of fiber distribution index(FDI) which was calculated from the data of Confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM) on the sheet properties of Kenaf Hanji was also discussed.
The acetylation of papermaking pulp fiber(SwBKP, SwUKP, HwBKP and HwBCTMF) is carried out to modify the characteristics of pulp and paper. The effects of the addition of acetylated pulp on the filler retention and paper properties were investigated. The acetylation depended upon pulp type and the content of short fiber and fines. The addition of acetylated SwBKP did not deteriorate the retention of clay, talc and calcium carbonate, while the retention of titanium dioxide was increased with the addition of 20% and above. The brightness opacity, air permeability and tear strength were improved, but water resistance, burst strength and folding endurance were decreased by the addition of acetylated SwBKP and SwUKP. The tensile strength of SwBKP was increased until 20% of acetylated pulp is added, and then decreased. The tensile strength of SwUKP, however, was not changed until the acetylated pulp of 25% is added. The dimensional stability was improved by the addition of acetylated pulp and showed the different response to SwBKP and SwUKP.

Properties of pulp fibers can be modified by LbL multilayering technology. We evaluated the effect of stock composition on the polyelectrolyte multilayering performance of pulp fibers in this study. Stock composition was varied with pulp type and fines content. Three types of pulp-Hw-BKP, BCTMP and KOCC-were treated with polyelectrolytes of poly-DADMAC and PSS. Fines content of stock were controlled at 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40%. Zeta potential of pulp fibers and charge demand of filtrate were evaluated. The highest adsorption ratio was obtained for BCTMP because of its shortest fiber length and highest specific surface area. Higher fines content in the stock increased the adsorption ratio of polyelectrolyte onto pulp fiber and it required a higher amount of polyelectrolyte for charge neutralization. For the pulp stock with higher fines content, a higher level of polyelectrolyte and the increased layer number were required to modify and stabilize the electrochemical properties of pulp fibers.

This study was carried out to develop new application field and obtain the basic data of mixed paper with wood pulp and chitosan fiber for producing functional paper. Two types of wood pulp, such as SwBKP and HwBKP, were mixed with chitosan fiber. Physical and optical properties, water vapor absorption, air permeability, antibacterial activity and ash were measured. And the surface morphology of manufactured paper was observed using SEM. The results are as follows. It was revealed that density, breaking length, burst index, tear index, folding endurance and brightness were reduced but water vapor absorption and air permeability were on the rise in the structural view of SwBKP according to increasing the chitosan fiber ratio. Those HwBKP added chitosan fiber were great not only in the strength but also water vapor absorption and air permeability except for brightness. The water vapor absorption was lower and the air permeability was higher in the HwBKP added various chitosan fiber ratios than those with no chitosan fiber. It is estimated that these properties were related with various mixed rate of chitosan fiber. Particularly, air permeability was strongly dependent on the mixed rate of chitosan fiber. The chitosan fiber has superior antibacterial property, comparing with wood fiber. Adding chitosan fiber to the wood pulp was found to have an excellent antibacterial activity, more than 90%. The ashes were determined within 0.5%. Special bonds between chitosan fiber and wood pulp was observed by SEM and it means that the chitosan fiber were combined equally in the interior of wood pulp. In conclusion, mixing wood pulp with chitosan fiber can not only improves the quality of paper but also extend the usage of paper as a functional paper by using inherent property of chitosan. After all, production of functional paper added chitosan fiber is expected for new valuable industry of paper.

Wet compaction test (WCT) is a fiber evaluation method where wet fibers are compressed at one side of a cylinder and water drains out from the other side. The consistency of the fiber furnishes and their pressures are recorded during the test. In the previous study we found that WCT results always gave better coefficients of determination in fiber furnish drainage, and paper properties (density, tensile, tear, and burst strength) than those of WRV (water retention value). Fiber freeness and fiber length correlated well with drainage and tear strength of the furnishes, respectively; however, their correlations were very much improved by combining the WCT results. In this study, we used the WCT test for fractionated fiber furnishes to see whether improvement of the WCT is possible. We found that strength properties such as breaking length and burst index were correlated better with the fractionated long fiber furnishes. Drainage was greatly affected by the presence of short fiber furnishes. We used bleached chemical pulps (SwBKP, HwBKP), recycled pulp (OCC), and mechanical pulp (BCTMP) as fiber furnishes in this study. Fiber fractionation can be performed on-line in these days by using multifractor and WCT can be used as an on-line test in papermachine in the future.

Refining is very important process of fibers treatment for proper paper properties. An extent of refining is usually measured by freeness, although freeness gives complicated meanings. One of a direct way of studying the refining effects on pulp fibers is making photomicrographs of beaten fibers. The conventional microscopy like light microscopy(LM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) require to preserve the wet structure of pulp fibers morphologically since most of papermaking process is carried out almost entirely in water. Recently developed microscopy, especially confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM), offers the possibility of examining fully hydrated pulp fibers. Cross-sectional images of wet pulp fibers are also generated using optical sectioning by CLSM and image analysis in order to verify and quantify the extent of fiber wall swelling indicating the internal fibrillation. At low beating load such as 2.5 kgf, in the same freeness, breaking length is higher than that of high beating load such as 5.6 kgf. fiber wall thickness at low beating load is greater than that at high beating load. This result is accounted for the fact that internal fibrillation in the low beating load was high.

Fiber characteristics and fiber distribution of thermomechanical pulp(TMP), bisulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(bisulfite CTMP), neutral sulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(neutral sulfite CTMP) from kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L., Malvaceae) cultivar Tainug-2 cultivated in the reclaimed land of Korea were examined to use effectively nonwood fibers as an alternative raw material sources for papermaking. Yields of TMP and CTMP from kenaf were lower than those of TMP from hardwoods and CTMP from softwoods and hardwoods. Bark fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 ranged 2.04 to 2.30 mm long and $18.7{\sim}19.7{\mu}m$ width. Core fibers averaged 0.63 to 0.80 mm long and $29.5{\sim}31.4{\mu}m$ wide. Coarseness of bark fiber was higher than that of core fiber, and fiber from TMP were higher than those from both bisulfite CTMP and neutral sulfite CTMP. Curl indexes of bark fibers were higher than those of core fibers. However curl indexes were not significantly affected by the pulping conditions. Short fiber distributions were higher in core fibers from TMP and CTMP and long fiber distributions were higher in bark fibers. There was no significant difference in fiber distribution of whole and core fibers obtained from TMP and CTMP, Fibers from neutral sulfite CTMP, however, exhibited a little higher long fiber distribution. Distinct difference in anatomical characteristics was found between core and bast fibers of kenaf plant. Parenchyma cell, pith parenchyma cell and vessel were observed in core fibers and bast fiber in bast sections.
