  • Recently increasing in marketing or policy decision is the trend of reflecting big data, which, however, has yet to be used directly for the location analysis of public facilities in terms of urban planning. This study examined how the local currency big data, issued often recently by municipalities throughout the country, can be used for the decision-making to select the location of public facilities more rationally. It is such an interesting attempt to acquire the big data of local currency payments by local residents and directly apply it to analyzing the location analysis of public facilities they use. The big data of local currencies which are issued by most municipalities now in Korea will continue to extend its role as the public data. Relatively easily available for municipalities with low cost, it is expected to be used for various policy decisions in future. Although the analysis of big data can make more accurate results than conventional survey methods, however, local residents' participation should not be scaled down in policy decisions. Rather, they should be given the findings of this kind of scientific survey so as to extend the citizen-participatory decision-making model.

WISE AND AKARI

  • The first all-sky mid-/far-infrared survey by IRAS in the 1980s, has been followed by only two more, by AKARI, from 2006, and WISE in 2010. I discuss some features of the WISE survey, and highlight some key results from early extragalactic observations that have been made by the science team during the operation of the telescope, and the post-operation proprietary period during which the public release data products were being generated. The efficient survey strategy and very high-data rate from WISE produced a catalogue of 530 million objects that was released to the public in March 2012. The WISE survey strategy naturally provided the deepest coverage at the ecliptic poles, where matched comparison fields were obtained using Spitzer, and where AKARI also observed deep fields. I describe some of the follow-up work that has been carried out based on the WISE survey, and the prospects for enhancing the WISE data by combining the AKARI survey results are also discussed. While the all-sky AKARI survey is less deep than the WISE catalogue, and is still being worked on by the AKARI science team, it includes a larger number of bands, extends to longer wavelengths, and in particular has very complementary band passes to WISE in the mid-infrared waveband, which will provide enhanced spectral information for relatively bright targets.

  • Researchers have been perplexed by the issue of unit nonresponse since the beginning of practicing survey research and have been attentive to the causes that lead to the occurrence of unit nonresponse as well as the impact of unit nonresponse. However, because researchers have little to no information regarding unit nonrespondents, it is unlikely that they are able to examine the differences between participants and nonrespondents to estimate the loss of representativeness in the final sample compared with the target population. Therefore, the lack of information regarding the absentees complicates addressing the unit nonresponse bias in a satisfactory manner. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the demographic characteristics and political attitudes of nonrespondents by relying on information provided by their spouses, which was obtained through a telephone survey conducted in Taiwan. It is found that demographic variables as well as political attitudes are related to the likelihood of an individual becoming a unit nonrespondent in telephone surveys.

  • The Spitzer Public Legacy Survey of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (SpUDS) has been carried out with four IRAC bands and one MIPS band (24um). SpUDS surveys 1 square degree of the UDS field, that has been covered by one of the deepest near IR surveys and by various multiwavelength observations from X-ray to radio (XMM, GALEX, Subaru, SCUBA, VLA). We present a summary of the photometric data including number counts derived at 3.6-24 microns. In conjunction with extensive multiwavelengh data, we are able to show the multiwavelenght color distribution of MIR sources, and how different SED types contribute to the number counts.

  • The headline of advertisements holds the important position in advertisement recognition and receptivity. In this paper, we classified the headlines as several types with measuring the response effects for purpose of understanding the customer's behavior. Also we conducted the decision tree analysis and correspondence analysis. The decision tree shows the difference between responders and non-responders, and the correspondence analysis shows the relationship between the sales and the customer's demographic information.

The Analysis on Causes of Areas with Public Appeals to the Ecosystem and Nature Map (생태·자연도 이의신청지역의 원인 분석)

  • The objective of this study is to seek for improvement measures to make the Ecosystem and Nature Map by analyzing causes for grade changes and distributional characteristics of areas with public objections to the Ecosystem and Nature Map notified by e-official gazette from 2014 to June 2016. The receipt of public appeals has been recently increased from average 23 cases a year(2007-2013) to average 33 cases a year(2014-June 2016) while there were 42 areas with public appeals for less than the minimum area($62,500m^2$) for the evaluation of grade of the Ecosystem and Nature Map. Most of the public appeals focused on the 1st grade zone of the Ecosystem and Nature Map. Before grade changes by public appeals, the 1st grade zone of the Ecosystem and Nature Map were 76.0% of the whole areas with public appeals. However, after grade changes by public appeals, it was rapidly decreased to 25.2%, which means that a lot of the 1st grade zone with public appeals were lowered. In the results of analyzing the distributional characteristics of areas with public appeals, they were mostly distributed in lowland(less than 250m altitude), section with $10{\sim}20^{\circ}$ slope, and areas close to or within 100m from built-up area. Regarding areas with public appeals, the biggest time difference between the period of the existing research by National Ecosystem Survey and the period of notice after completing the treatment of public appeals was 18 years while areas showing 6-15 years of time difference were about 70%. Thus, there were huge differences in time of research and notice. Also, the biggest causes for grade changes were boundary errors caused by small-scale survey, and then followed by changes in evaluation of endangered species and occurrence of built-up area and damaged land. Analyzing areas with public appeals in each evaluation item of the Ecosystem and Nature Map, vegetation part was 73.0%, and endangered species area was 23.1% while topography and wetland was less.

Public Housing and Social Capital in Australia

  • This paper addresses the relationship between public housing tenure and social disadvantage. The research examines social capital levels among public tenants in Australia, concentrating on their level of interpersonal trust and confidence in a range of public institutions. Through multivariate analyses of national survey data it also profiles the social and political background of public housing tenants. Although public housing tenants have access to secure and affordable housing, they appear to be less trusting and 'happy' than private renters or homeowners, and exhibit less confidence in some institutions such as the Australian parliament, universities and the ABC (the Australian public television broadcaster). These results probably reflect the residualised nature of public housing in Australia and indicate that public tenants are likely to be 'alienated' from certain aspects of mainstream culture. However, public tenants have higher levels of confidence than homeowners in the Australian defence forces and trade unions. So public housing may 'shore up' confidence and social capital in some areas, and levels of trust would be lower if public housing was not available to disadvantaged citizens.
