  • Two empirical studies were conducted to examine what determines the happiness of Korean adolescents. In Study 1, 155 high school students were asked to describe situations where they felt happy. Content analysis was conducted for their responses, which led to three categories, physical (economy, health and appearance), psychological (self-related responses, rest and leasure, and religion), and social one (haman relationship including family, friendship, etc, and social achievement). In Study 2, 450 high school students rated themselves on each of 88 happiness items developed through the responses obtained in Study 1. Factor analysis created 10 happiness factors labeled familial relationship, individuality, academic performance, religion, dating friends, appearance, self-discovery, economy, friendships, and psychological composure. These findings were compared with those findings about the middle-aged and the old-aged, and discussed on the developmental and cultural perspective.

  • This study examines Gijesa, a Korean tradition of memorial worship for departed ancestors, from the perspective of analytical psychology. To understand the psychological background of ancestral rites, a literature search was conducted to examine the basis for ancestral spirits, the objects of ancestral rites, the symbolic meaning of the customs and practice of Gijesa, and the contents of volume 3 of the book Jhuza-uryu about 'Ghosts and Ancestral Rituals'. Gijesa, the Korean ancestor worship, may appear as a complicated formal ritual, but it reveals a psychological phenomenon of individuation. Gijesa facilitates a conversation between descendants and ancestors, bridging the conscious and the unconscious, leading to a realization of totality. The creative aspect of spirit worship lies in the 'realization of the individuation process' in that it fosters a connection with the collective unconscious, the root of consciousness. When an individual develops into a new integrated personality, we could gain strength from the support of ancestors, the support of the unconscious. The relationship with the spirits of ancestors is essential because consciousness has an important relationship with its root, the collective unconscious, especially for those of us living in an era of chaos where the fundamental meaning of human existence is lost due to rationalism and materialism.

  • The objective of this study is to review the expressive effect of fashion illustrations and to enlarge its expressive range by analysing the correlations between fashion illustrations and surrealistic expressive characteristics. The results are as follows. The surrealistic expressive methods of fashion illustration such as depaysement and automatism have been used by many foreign and domestic fashion illustrators. I think that these methods reinforce the subjective aspect of expressive effects and enlarge the transmitting function of fashion message. The elements of expression are divided into color, texture, shape/form and space. Subjective colors rather than natural colors are used for the surrealistic expressive effect of color in fashion illustrations, and illusion of space is expressed by the change of brightness. The surrealistic expressive effect in fashion illustrations distorted the experience of factual texture and disturbed the visual texture. The use of tactile texture presented strange effects perspectively. The objects of shape in fashion illustrations were mainly human body. The form of human body presents reconstituted and reinterpreted figure by transformation or distortion according to the intention of the artist rather than realistic and physical form. In fashion illustration, the transformation of the human body itself whose body parts get separated, superposition of exterior material and human body, and the distortion of human body by the change are done. Space is where background and shapes are inter-penetrated because they are ambiguous and untransparent, and where all are in disorder and unbalance. The method of projection uses distance perspective, multiple perspective and amplified perspective representation, and forms a psychological space feeling. And I think the use of surrealistic expressive methods are very useful for the subjective sensitiveness and the transmission of a fashion message, and presents a possibility to develop a new expressive method.

  • Secondary school environmental education is offered mostly in extra-curricular activities, not included in the school curriculum. Therefore, drawing out its curriculum has been left to teachers' discretion. Teachers' beliefs in EE have much more influence on the selection of content of EE than any other psychological factors. It follows that the reality of school EE depends on what teachers believes about EE and which content of EE they select according to their beliefs. This study is to research the realities of the secondary school EE: examine teachers' beliefs about EE and analyse environmental views in their environment-related programs; examine whether teachers' programs reflect their beliefs and environmental views; identify the factors which teachers inhibit teachers from their expression of these beliefs. To identify what perspective was reflected to these programs, this study employs environmentalism. Environmentalism can be classified into 3 categories: environmental management; deep ecology; social ecology. Data were gathered by means of in-depth interviews with five teachers. To show teachers' beliefs clearly, the analysis of the data was conducted on the basis of 5 categories: 'ecological sensitivity', 'value education', 'behaviors', 'issues', 'perception of a cause of environmental problems, related to social structures'. These belifs reflect deep ecological perspective and social ecology. But these perspectives did not accord with those in programs. Most EE programs included only the deep ecological perspective. They didn't reflect their beliefs that students should perceive the cause of environmental problems in the social structure. The factors which teachers find as inhibiting or supporting their expression of these beliefs were analysed as following: (1) EE requests the change of curriculum and methods of instruction; (2) teachers should acquire 'environmental consciousness' and environmentrelated knowledge; (3) programs requests an administrative and financial support.

  • Computer with various powerful functions has profound potential for mathematics instruction and learning. As computer technology progress, its applicability to mathematics education become more comprehensive. Not only its functional development but various psychological positions also changed the way computer technology utilized in mathematics education. In behaviorist's perspective, computer viewed as a teaching machine and constructivist viewed computer as microworld where students could explore various mathematical contents. Both theoretical positions emphasized individual aspect of learning because behaviorist tried to individualize learning using computer and constructivist focused on the process of individual construction. But learning is not only a individual event but also a social event. Therefore we must take social aspect into account. This is especially important when it comes to computer based learning. So far, mathematics loaming with computer weighed individual aspect of loaming. Even in microworld environment, learning should be mediated by teacher and collaborative learning activities. In this aspect, the roles of teacher and peers are very important and socio-cultural perspective sheds light on the computer based learning. In socio-cultural perspective, the idea of scaffold is very important in learning and students gradually internalize the social dimension and scaffolding is gradually faded. And in the zone of proximal development, teacher and more competent peers guide students to formulate their own understanding. In sum, we must take following points into account. First of all, computer should not be viewed as a medium for individualized teaming. That is, interaction with computer should be catalyst for collaborative activities with peers. So, exploration in computer environment has to be followed by small group activities including small group discussion. Secondly, regardless of the role that computer would play, teacher should play a crucial role in computer based learning. This does not mean teacher should direct every steps in learning process. Teacher's intervention should help student construct actively. Thirdly, it is needed to conceptualize computer in learning situation as medium. This would affect learning situation and result in the change of pre-service and in-service teacher training. Computer to be used effectively in mathematics classroom, researches on assessment of computer based learning are needed.

  • The present study examined whether individuals would respond differently, as a function of cultural self-orientations, when their requests were rejected. Also examined was whether individuals with different cultural self-orientations would predict differently how their interaction partner would respond when they rejected his or her request. Furthermore, it was investigated whether experimentally induced perspective-taking would influence responses to rejection and predictions of responses to rejection. It was found that responses to rejection as well as predictions of responses to rejection varied as a function of individual's independent self-orientation and perspective-taking. However, no significant effects were found with regard to interdependent self-orientation. Based on these results, the implications that cultural self-orientations have for request rejection and social behavior in general are discussed, and future directions are suggested.

  • This purposed of this study was to investigate the effect of empathy on social justice commitment from a social-cognitive perspective. Specifically, we examined how cognitive and affective empathy affect social justice commitment through social justice self-efficacy, social justice outcome expectation, and social justice interest which represent a social-cognitive path of behavior. Based on the self-report survey sample of 537 people in their twenties, we first controlled social desirability, and then analyzed the measurement and structure model using Structure Estimate Modeling(SEM). As a result, it turned out that both cognitive and affective empathy indirectly affected social justice commitment through the path of the social-cognitive model. However, affective empathy had a larger effect size compared to cognitive empathy. Results suggest that empathy competence has an effect on not only general altruistic behavior as known before but also social justice behavior which include the value of equality and anti-discrimination. Finally, ways for facilitating social justice commitment in terms of cognitive and affective empathy were suggested.
