This study simulates the responses of large-scale bridge piers under pseudo-dynamic tests to investigate the performance of four types of numerical models that consider the nonlinear behavior of the pier and the rocking behavior of the footing. In the models, beam-column elements with plastic hinges are used for the pier, two types of foundation models (rotational spring and distributed spring models) are adopted for the footing behavior, and two types of viscous damping models (Rayleigh and dashpot models) are applied for energy dissipation. Results show that the nonlinear pier model combined with the distributed spring-dashpot foundation model can reasonably capture the behavior of the piers in the tests. Although the commonly used rotational spring foundation model adopts a nonlinear moment-rotation property that reflects the effect of footing uplift, it cannot suitably simulate the hysteretic moment-rotation response of the footing in the dynamic analysis once the footing uplifts. In addition, the piers are susceptible to cracking damage under strong seismic loading and the induced plastic response can provide contribution to earthquake energy dissipation.

Posttraumatic pseudoaneurysm of the face is caused by blunt, penetrating, or surgical trauma. Although its incidence is low, pseudoaneurysm rupture can cause a life-threatening, massive hemorrhage. A 48-year-old man visited our emergency center due to a fall-down accident. Three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) showed a comminuted zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture of the left face. After open reduction and internal fixation, the surgical wound healed without any complications. However, the patient was readmitted 10 days after surgery due to pus-like discharge from the wound. Contrast-enhanced CT to find the abscess unexpectedly revealed a pseudoaneurysm in the left retromaxillary area. Massive oral bleeding occurred on the night of re-hospitalization and emergency surgery was done. The bleeding site was identified as a pseudo-aneurysmal rupture of the posterior superior alveolar artery in the retromaxillary area. Hemostasis was achieved by packing Vaseline gauze in the maxillary sinus using an endoscope. Delayed rupture and massive bleeding of posttraumatic retromaxillary pseudoaneurysm after a zygomaticomaxillary fracture is a low-probability, but high-impact event. Therefore, additional contrast-enhanced CT should be considered to evaluate the possibility of a posttraumatic pseudoaneurysm in cases of severe comminuted zygomaticomaxillary fracture.

Flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays with organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) backplanes have been studied. A gate driver is required to drive the OLED display. The gate driver is integrated into the panel to reduce the manufacturing cost of the display panel and to simplify the module structure using fabrication methods based on low-temperature, low-cost, and large-area printing processes. In this paper, pseudo complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) logic gates are implemented using OTFTs for the gate driver integrated in the flexible OLED display. The pseudo CMOS inverter and NAND gates are designed and fabricated on a flexible plastic substrate using inkjet-printed OTFTs and the same process as the display. Moreover, the operation of the logic gates is confirmed by measurement. The measurement results show that the pseudo CMOS inverter can operate at input signal frequencies up to 1 kHz, indicating the possibility of the gate driver being integrated in the flexible OLED display.

The objective of this experimental research is to assess the seismic performance of circular RC bridge pier specimens retrofitted with fibers which were designed as a prototype of Hagal bridge in the city of Suwon, Korea. Pseudo-dynamic test has been done for two nonseismic test specimens which were nonseismic designed by the related provisions of the Highway Design Specification, and four nonseismic test specimens retrofitted with fibers in the plastic hinge region. Important test parameters were load patterns, and retrofit. The seismic behavior has been analyzed through the displacement ductility, energy analysis, and capacity spectrum. Approximate 7.0 displacement ductility was observed for nonseismic test specimens retrofitted with fibers. It is concluded that these retrofitting test specimens could have sufficient seismic capacity in the region of moderate seismic zone.

Recently, polymethyl methacrylate based plastic optical fibers (POFs) have attracted considerable attention as a potential medium for local area network (LAN) and home network applications. Since the POFs have very low optical loss at around 650mm, in particular, it becomes quite important to develop GHz transmitters operating at this wavelength for high bit rate optical transmission applications of the POFs. In this paper, we present generation of ${\geq}1.5 Gbps$ pseudo-random binary sequence optical signals by using a gain switched InGaA1P Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser with a high frequency filter, operating at 650mm, and the application of these signals to bandwidth measurement of POFs.

The objective of this study is to analyze the influences of fatty alcohols and fatty acids on rheological properties of oil in water (O/W) emulsions using viscosity and rheograms. As the chain length of fatty alcohols and fatty acids lengthened, the viscosity of emulsions was increased. The influence of fatty alcohols on viscosity enhancement was stronger than that of fatty acids. Both stearyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol, which have carbon chain length similar to lipophilic portion of surfactant used in emulsion preparation, had showed the best increase in viscosity of O/W emulsions. O/W emulsions prepared with fatty alcohols and fatty acids were pseudo-plastic fluid and they showed shear thinning behaviour like as the common cosmetic emulsions. O/W emulsions prepared with cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol were thixotropic fluids and thixotropy increased with an increase in the concentration of fatty alcohols and fatty acids. Also O/W emulsions prepared with fatty alcohols were more thixotropic than those prepared with fatty acids. For the sake of viscosity increase related to O/W emulsions stability and spreadability enhancement related to payoff, it is thought that fatty alcohols are more useful than fatty acids in the O/W emulsions as the emulsion stabilizer.

Due to the 1989 Loma Prieta, 1995 Hyogoken Nambu earthquakes, etc, a number of bridge columns were collapsed in flexure-shear failures as a consequence of the premature termination of the column longitudinal reinforcement. Nevertheless, previous researches for the performance of bridge columns were concentrated on the flexural failure mode. It is well understood that the seismic behaviour of RC bridge piers was dependent on the performance of the plastic hinge of RC bridge piers, the ductility of which was desirable to be computed on the basis of the curvature. Experimental investigation was made to evaluate the variation of the curvature of the plastic hinge region for the seismic performance of earthquake-damaged RC columns in flexure-shear failure mode. Seven test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2.5 were made with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading under a constant axial load, $P=0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Residual seismic capacity of damaged specimens was evaluated by analzying the moment-curvature hysteresis and the curvature ductility. Test results show that the biggest curvature was developed around 15cm above the footing, which induced the column failure. It was observed that RC bridge specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low curvature ductility but significant improvement was made in the curvature ductility of RC specimens with FRP straps wrapped around the plastic hinge region. Based on the experimental variation of the curvature of RC specimens, new equivalent length of the plastic hinge region was proposed by considering the lateral confinement in this study. The analytical and experimental relationship between the displacement and the curvature ductility were compared based on this proposal, which gave excellent result.

This research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement steels in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity. Six circular columns of 0.6m diameter and 1.5m height were made with two confinement steel ratios. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading simultaneously under an axial load, P=$0.1f_{ck}A_{g}$, and residual seismic performance of damaged columns was evaluated. Test results show that RC bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels behaved with minor damage even under artificial earthquakes with 0.22g PGA, but failed at low ductility subjected to the subsequent quasi-static load test. This failure was due to the debonding of the lap splice. The specimens externally wrapped with composite FRP straps in the potential plastic hinge region showed significant improvement both in flexural strength and displacement ductility.

For the construction of PC bridge piers the implementation of 1992 seismic provisions, longitudinal steels were practically lap-spliced in the plastic hinge region. Experimental investigation was conducted ductility of evaluate the seismic earthquake-experienced reinforced concrete columns with 2,5 aspect ratio. Six test specimens were mode with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading simultaneously under a constant axial load, P=0.1f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. Residual seismic performance of damaged columns was evaluated and compared to that of the corresponding original columns. Test results show that PC bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low ductility. This was due to the debonding of the lap splice, which resulted from insufficient development of the longitudinal steels. The specimens externally wrapped with composite FRP straps in the potential plastic hinge region indicated significant improvement both in flexural strength and displacement ductility.
Purpose: We have classified blepharoptosis into the categories including pseudoptosis in Koreans and compared with other previous studies. Methods: Total of 250 patients(398 eyes) who underwent surgery for blepharoptosis from 1987 to 2006 were studied. By classification of Beard, patients were categorized into congenital, acquired and pseudo blepharoptosis and later they were reclassified by their etiologies. Also addition of pseudoptosis to the classification of Frueh, blepharoptosis were categorized into neurogenic type, myogenic type, aponeurotic type, mechanical type and pseudoptosis. And we divided these cases by the degree of blepharoptosis, levator function and the operation methods. Results: Out of the 250 patients, 175 patients were congenital type, 49 were acquired type and 26 were pseudoptosis. According to the mechanistic classification, 177 myogenic type, 30 aponeurotic, 7 mechanic, 8 neurogenic and 28 pseudoptosis were categorized. Regarding severity of blepharoptosis, there were 29.2% of mild, 40% of moderate, and 30.8% of severe cases. Out of the 398 cases, in terms of the operation methods, there were 39 aponeurosis plication, 184 levator resection, 5 Muller tucking, 60 Orbicularis oculi muscle flap, 66 frontalis transfer, and 21 blepharoplasty. Conclusion: The cause and degree of ptosis, and levator function are very important when considering the amount of resected muscle. There were only a few studies about blepharoptosis classification including pseudoptosis category. Therefore, through this study, we can investigate the relationship between the pseudoptosis and the others. This study could be useful for the making future management plans of blepharoptosis in Korean patients.
