혼합사건 동적모사를 이용한 PSA공정 성능 평가 (The performance assessment of PSA process using combined dynamic simulation)

  • The performance of one-column isothermal PSA process is assessed by dynamic simulator, gPROMS. The four-step and five-step processes are compared. A five-step process is employed in order to show the effect of the addtional cocurrent depressurization step on the four-step PSA process. Two processes parameters, purity and recovery of SO$_{2}$ are used for the performance comparison. The results of dynamic simulation show that four-step process is superior to five-step process in recovery, but not in purity.

Molecular phylogeny of the Family Scytosiphonaceae (Phaeophyceae)

  • Recent phylogenetic studies of scytosiphonacean brown algae show many conflicts with current classification. In order to clearly define the phylogenetic relationships of the family, we newly sequenced the photosystem I coding psaA gene (1488 base pairs) from 13 taxa (15 samples), of the family, and, for comparison, rbcL from four taxa. The psaA region has more informative sites (17.9%) than the rbcL (13.1%) and the number of nodes supported by over 50% bootstrap values is more in the psaA phylogeny (53 /57 nodes; 93%) than in the rbcL (47/63 nodes; 74.6%). The psaA phylogenies are basically congruent with the rbcL trees, recognizing two major groups in the monophyletic Scytosiphonaceae. The first group included Myelophycus, Petalonia, Scytosiphon, and elongate sack-shaped species of Colpomenia, primarily cold temperate elements with unilocular zoidangia on sporophytes. The second group, although not resolved, consisted of Hydroclathrus, Chnoospora, Rosenvingea, and ball-shaped Colpomenia, primarily warm-temperate taxa with both unilocular and plurilocular zoidangia on sporophytes. Chnoospora is not monophyletic, as was previously shown the paraphyly of Colpomenia, Petalonia, and Scytosiphon. Hydroclathrus clathratus from Korea and Japan was not monophyletic. Our studies show that gametophytic characters are the main source of conflict for the present taxonomy of the family. The psaA region is a useful tool for resolution of phylogenetic relationships within the Scytosiphonaceae.

Correlation between Low Gleason Score and Prostate Specific Antigen Levels with Incidence of Bone Metastases in Prostate Cancer Patients: When to Omit Bone Scans?

  • Background: To identify correlation and incidence of bone metastases in prostate cancer patient with low Gleason scores (GS) and prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels. Materials and Methods: This descriptive restrospective study covered patients with prostate cancer in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in 2006-2011. Of a total of 478, those who had PSA values, histological examination, and bone scan were included, resulting in 358 eligible cases. PSA values were measured using the sandwich electrochemiluminescent immunoassay. Histological examination was graded according to Gleason's grading system and divided into 3 categories: well differentiated ($GS{\leq}6$), moderately differentiated (GS 7) and poorly differentiated (GS 8-10). Bone scans were performed using a radiopharmaceutical agent ($T_c$ 99m methylenen diphosphonate) with images captured by gamma camera. Results: The mean age was $67.5{\pm}7.8$, mean GS was $7.7{\pm}1.3$ and median PSA was 56.9 (range: 0.48-17000 ng/mL). There were 11 patients (3.0%) with positive bone scan with PSA<20 ng/mL and GS<8. Furthermore, there were 2 patients (0.6%) with $GS{\leq}6$ and PSA<10 ng/mL showing bone metastasis. Conclusions: In our study, there were still small percentage of patients with bone metastasis even when low values of PSA (PSA<10 ng/mL) and GS ($GS{\leq}6$) were applied.

Genomic Features and Lytic Activity of the Bacteriophage PPPL-1 Effective against Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, a Cause of Bacterial Canker in Kiwifruit

  • Bacterial canker in kiwifruit is caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). In this study, the bacteriophage PPPL-1 effective against Psa was characterized. Belonging to the Podoviridae family, PPPL-1 was effective against most Psa strains as well as most Pseudomonas syringae pathovars. PPPL-1 carries a 41,149-bp genome with 49 protein coding sequences and is homologous to the previously reported phiPSA2 bacteriophage. The lytic activity of PPPL-1 was stable up to $40^{\circ}C$, within a range of pH 3-11 and under 365 nm UV light. These results indicate that the bacteriophage PPPL-1 might be useful to control Psa in the kiwifruit field.

Study on multi-unit level 3 PSA to understand a characteristics of risk in a multi-unit context

  • Since the Fukushima Daiichi accident in 2011, concerns for the safety of multi-unit Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) sites have risen. This is because more than 70% of NPP sites are multi-unit sites that have two or more NPP units and a multi-unit accident occurred for the first time. After this accident, Probability Safety Assessment (PSA) has been considered in many countries as one of the tools to quantitatively assess the safety for multi-unit NPP sites. One of the biggest concerns for a multi-unit accident such as Fukushima is that the consequences (health and economic) will be significantly higher than in the case of a single-unit accident. However, many studies on multi-unit PSA have focused on Level 1 & 2 PSA, and there are many challenges in terms of public acceptance due to various speculations without an engineering background. In this study, two kinds of multi-unit Level 3 PSA for multi-unit site have been carried out. The first case was the estimation of multi-unit risk with conservative assumptions to investigate the margin between multi-unit risk and QHO, and the other was to identify the effect of time delays in releases between NPP units on the same site. Through these two kinds of assessments, we aimed at investigating the level of multi-unit risk and understanding the characteristics of risk in a multiunit context.

당뇨흰쥐의 콜라겐 감소 및 인간 피부 섬유아세포의 MMP-1 증가에 대한 목단피(牧丹皮)의 항피부노화 효과 (Anti-skin-aging effects of Paeonia Suffruticosa Andrews on maintaining skin collagen in STZ-induced diabetic rats and inhibiting MMP-1 systhesis in human skin fibroblasts)

  • Objective : Skin aging is commonly observed in patients with diabetes mellitus, which can be accessed by the amount of skin collagen and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1). In the present study, anti-skin-aging effects of Root Cortex of Paeonia Suffruticosa Andrews (PSA), which has been widely used to treat diabetes mellitus, are investigated. Methods : Streptozotocin (STZ) was intraperitoneally injected to rats to induce diabetes. Body weights, feed intake, organ weights, blood glucose, and other biochemical index are determined in both normal and diabetic rats. In order to study the effect of PSA on skin aging, the amount of skin collagen was measured in diabetic rats after PSA treatments. Also, MMP-1 synthesis in UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblasts was investigated. Results : 1. When PSA was administered to STZ-induced diabetic rats, feed intake was significantly increased and blood glucose and total cholesterol were decreased in a dose-dependent manner. However, there are no differences in individual organ weights, GOT, and GPT. 2. A decrease of skin collagen in diabetic rats was significantly suppressed when PSA was treated. 3. PSA also inhibited MMP-1 synthesis in UVB-irradiated normal human skin fibroblasts, similar to retinoid, a well-known effective anti-skin-aging substance. Conclusion: PSA suppressed a collagen decrease in diabetic rats and inhibited MMP-1 synthesis in UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblasts. Therefore, the treatment of PSA is very effective to slow down the skin aging process.

국내에서 분리된 Streptomycin 저항성 Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae Biovar 3 균주에서 rpsL 유전자의 돌연변이 (Mutation of rpsL Gene in Streptomycin-Resistant Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae Biovar 3 Strains Isolated from Korea)

  • Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa)는 키위에 세균성 궤양병을 일으키는 병원균이다. Psa 균주는 유전적 및 생화학적 특징에 따라 5개의 biovar로 나누어진다. 그중 biovar 2와 3이 국내에서 발견되어 광범위한 피해를 주고 있다. Psa를 방제하는 효율적인 방법 중 한가지는 streptomycin과 같은 항생제를 사용하는 것이다. 그러나, 이 항생제에 저항성을 갖는 균주가 국내에서 분리되었고, 선행 연구에서 biovar 2 균주의 저항성이 strA-strB 유전자에 의한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 본 연구에서는 Psa biovar 3 균주에서 streptomycin 저항성의 분자적 기작을 밝히고자 하였다. 실험실에서 선발된 streptomycin 저항성 균주의 리보솜 단백질 S12를 암호화하는 유전자인 rpsL의 염기서열을 결정한 결과, 43번째 또는 88번째 코돈에서 자연발생적 점 돌연변이가 일어난 것을 확인하였다. 한편, 두 곳의 키위 과수원에서 분리된 4개의 streptomycin 저항성 biovar 3 균주에서는 민감성 균주에서 AAA인 rpsL의 코돈 43이 AGA로 단일 염기 치환이 일어났고, 이는 아미노산을 lysine에서 arginine으로 변화시키게 된다. 국내에서 발견된 biovar 3 균주 모두의 저항성 기작은 rpsL 유전자의 돌연변이에 기인하였다.

Treatment of Complete Persistent Sciatic Artery with Distal Thromboembolism by Thromboembolectomy Only

  • A persistent sciatic artery (PSA) is very rare congenital vascular anomaly which is present in 0.025% to 0.04% of the population by an angiographic study. A PSA is usually combined with aneurismal disease or thromboembolic events because of its arteriosclerosis and vessel wall degeneration. The treatments of symptomatic PSA are comprised of exclusion of PSA from circulation and bypass surgery for the lower limb. However, surgical treatment should be tailored to its anatomy and presentation. We report a successful treatment of PSA with distal thromboembolism by thromboembolectomy without bypass surgery.

Why Do We Pay for Advertising Models?: Suggestions for Maximizing Advertising Effectiveness

  • Purpose - In this study, we inspected the effects of public-service advertising (PSA) and commercial advertisements on consumers' social and emotional values. Specifically, we include source credibility on advertising models as a mediating variable to compare the path difference between the social and emotional value of consumers, and to test the appropriateness of advertising expenses. Research design, data, and methodology - A total of 219 copies of effective questionnaires were used and methodologies such as Cronbach's alpha, paired samples t-test, and structural equation modeling (SEM) were conducted. Results - The results showed that the consumer model was effective at PSA, while celebrities and CEOs were effective at commercial advertising. Further, only credibility (among source credibility) made a significant difference in the test of PSA models of both PSA and commercial advertising that consumers preferred. Conclusions - The advertising model types varied depending on advertising types (for example, PSA and commercial advertising). Therefore, celebrities and CEOs appearing in commercial advertising should have no ethical or moral defect by self-control, and marketers should elect the model considering such a fact.

Development of a Computer Code, CONPAS, for an Integrated Level 2 PSA

  • A PC window-based computer code, CONPAS (CONtainment Performance Analysis System), has been developed to integrate the numerical, graphical, and results-operation aspects of Level 2 probabilistic safety assessments (PSA) for nuclear power plants automatically. As a main logic for accident progression analysis, it employs a concept of the small containment phenomenological event tree (CPET) helpful to trace out visually individual accident progressions and of the detailed supporting event tree (DSET) for its detailed quantification. For the integrated analysis of Level 2 PSA, the code utilizes five distinct, but closely related modules. Its computational feasibility to real PSAs has been assessed through an application to the UCN 3&4 full scope Level 2 PSA. Compared with other existing computer codes for Level 2 PSA, the CONPAS code provides several advanced features: (1) systematic uncertainty analysis / importance analysis / sensitivity analysis, (2) table / graphical display & print, (3) employment of the recent Level 2 PSA technologies, and (4) highly effective user interface. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the key features of CONPAS code and results of its feasibility study.
