We show Akari data, Herschel data and data from the SCUBA2 camera on JCMT, of molecular clouds. We focus on pre-stellar cores within the clouds. We present Akari data of the L1147-1157 ring in Cepheus and show how the data indicate that the cores are being externally heated. We present SCUBA2 and Herschel data of the Ophiuchus region and show how the environment is also affecting core evolution in this region. We discuss the effects of the magnetic field in the Lupus I region, and how this lends support to a model for the formation and evolution of cores in filamentary molecular clouds.
We utilized a 2-D PDR code developed by Lee et al. (2014) to explore the observed OH line fluxes toward embedded protostars. This 2-D PDR code combines self-consistently the FUV radiative transfer, gas-energetics, chemistry, and line radiative transfer. We modeled two sources, GSS30-IRS1 and Elias29, which show conspicuous line emission in the Herschel/PACS wavelength range. The physical and chemical structure for a given embedded source was derived by fitting the PACS CO line fluxes. After exploring various parameter spaces, we conclude that IR-pumping effect either by the central IR source and dust in-situ is insignificant for OH emission, unlike previous studies. We here present a possible solution for the observed OH fluxes, which require a high OH abundance and temperature at the inner-part of the UV heated cavity wall.
L1251B, which was revealed as a small group of protostars by the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST), presents a great site of studying chemical evolution in gas and ice as well as various dynamical processes associated with star formation (infall, rotation, and outflow). We have mapped L1251B with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) aboard the SST to study the chemical distribution in the phases of gas and ice and the dynamical feature related to shock in the region. Various atomic lines and the $H_2$ pure rotational lines, which trace different shock velocities, were detected. In addition, the distribution of the water and $CO_2$ ices hints variety of the ice desorption mechanism in L1251B.
Near-IR $H_2$ emission features in the northern region of the Orion A giant molecular cloud were observed in the $CO\;J\;=\;1\;{\rightarrow}\;0$ line in search of CO outflows. Out of the 30 sources surveyed, CO line wings were detected toward 28 positions, suggesting a strong correlation between $H_2$ jets and CO outflows. Blueshifted wings were detected toward 26 positions while redshifted wings were detected toward 15 positions, which suggests that there is a bias in the source selection. The bias is more severe in OMC 3 than in OMC 2. Since the protostars in OMC 3 are younger and more deeply embedded, the bias may be caused by the difference of extinction between blueshifted and redshifted outflows. Some physical parameters of the outflows were derived from the line profiles.
The advent of robust, reliable and accurate higher order Godunov schemes for many of the systems of equations of interest in computational astrophysics has made it important to understand how to solve them in multi-scale fashion. This is so because the physics associated with astrophysical phenomena evolves in multi-scale fashion and we wish to arrive at a multi-scale simulational capability to represent the physics. Because astrophysical systems have magnetic fields, multi-scale magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is of especial interest. In this paper we first discuss general issues in adaptive mesh refinement (AMR), We then focus on the important issues in carrying out divergence-free AMR-MHD and catalogue the progress we have made in that area. We show that AMR methods lend themselves to easy parallelization. We then discuss applications of the RIEMANN framework for AMR-MHD to problems in computational astophysics.
Protostars grow their mass by the accretion of disk material, which is infalling from the envelope. This accretion process is important to the physical and chemical conditions of the disk and envelope, and thus, the planets yet to be formed from the disk material. Therefore, if we map the physical and chemical properties of disks and envelopes, we can study indirectly the accretion process in star formation. In particular, the chemical distribution in the disk and the inner envelope of a young stellar object is greatly affected by the thermal history, which is mainly determined by the accretion process in the system. In my talk, I will review the episodic accretion model for the low mass star formation and observational efforts to find the evidence of episodic accretion. Finally, I will present our recent ALMA detection of several complex organic molecules associated directly with the planet formation in V883 Ori, which is in the burst accretion phase.

Ices in interstellar environments are well traced mostly by their absorption features in the near- to mid-infrared spectrum. The infrared camera (IRC) aboard AKARI provides us the near-infrared spectroscopic data which cover $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ with a spectral resolution of R ~ 120. Our AKARI spectroscopic survey of young stellar objects (YSOs), including low-luminosity protostars and background stars, revealed the absorption features of $H_2O$, $CO_2$, CO, and XCN ice components. We present near-infrared spectra of the observed targets and compare their ice abundances with those previously derived from various YSOs and the background stars behind dense molecular clouds and cores. In addition, we suggest possible science cases for SPHEREx, NASA's new near-infrared space observatory, based on the results from our AKARI IRC spectroscopic study.

We present Spitzer IRS spectroscopy of $CO_2$ ice toward 19 young stellar objects (YSOs) with luminosity lower than $1L_{\odot}$. Pure $CO_2$ ice forms only at elevated temperatures, T > 20 K, and thus at higher luminosities. Current internal luminosities of YSOs with L < $1L_{\odot}$ do not provide such conditions out to radii of typical envelopes. Significant amounts of pure $CO_2$ ice would signify a higher past luminosity. We analyze $15.2{\mu}m$$CO_2$ ice bending mode absorption lines in comparison to the laboratory data. We decompose pure $CO_2$ ice from 12 out of 19 young low luminosity sources. The presence of the pure $CO_2$ ice component indicates high dust temperature and hence high luminosity in the past. The sum of all the ice components (total $CO_2$ ice amount) can be explained by a long period of low luminosity stage between episodic accretion bursts as predicted in an episodic accretion scenario. Chemical modeling shows that the episodic accretion scenario explains the observed total $CO_2$ ice amount best.
Infrared dark clouds(IRDCs) are believed to be the progenitors of massive stars and clusters. We obtained 350 and 850 ${\mu}m$ continuum maps of the IRDC G049.40-00.01 using SHARC-II on CSO. Twenty-one dense clumps were identified within G049.40-00.01 based on the 350 ${\mu}m$ continuum map with an angular resolution of about 9.6". We present submillimeter continuum maps and report physical properties of the clumps. The masses of clumps are from 50 to 600 solar mass. About 70% of the clumps are associated with bright 24 ${\mu}m$ emission sources indicating protostars. The most massive two clumps show enhanced, extended 4.5 ${\mu}m$ emission representing on-going star forming activity. The size-mass distribution of the clumps suggests that many of them are forming high-mass stars. G049.40-00.01 contains numerous objects in various evolutionary stages of star formation, from pre-stellar clumps to H II regions.

L1251B is an excellent example of a small group of pre- and protostellar objects in low-mass star-forming region. Previous interferometer data with a high angular resolution resolved the outflows associated with L1251B into a few components. To understand the physical conditions of the protostellar outflows in L1251B, we mapped this region spectroscopically with Spitzer/IRS and obtained spectral line data from Herschel/PACS. Spitzer/IRS provides the S(0)-S(7) pure rotational lines of H2 as well as fine-structure emissions produced in shocks such as S, [Si II], and [Fe II] and it is a powerful tool for studying shocked interstellar gas. In addition, [O I] lines observed with Herschel/PACS are described well by J-type shock models expected in the outflows from protostars. We will present an analysis of the L1251B protostellar outflow in the H2 pure rotational lines and fine-structure emissions.
