  • The setting of protective relays, which is critical to the system security, requires a huge volume of data and a lot of repetitive calculations. Therefore computerization of this process, named PROSET2000 is in progress in KEPCO. PROSET2000 is based on a power system protection database. The database must accomodate a variety of protective device data efficiently, which need be viewed and updated with ease. This paper suggests several database management functions for PROSET2000.

  • In order to advance and improve the performance of domestic aged power plants, IEDs have been developed for power generation systems. For smooth installation and operation of the protection relays, a detail settings study of IED is required. This paper deals with an analysis based on PSCAD and setting investigation of IED for loss of field, reverse power protection in Small Hydro Generation System.

  • A program for the protection coordination of distribution systems is reported. The developed program nailed DISCO, consisting of two modules has a capability of selling the overcurrent relays, reclosers, sectionalizers, fuses which are commonly used in the primary feeder systems. Setting is performed in a downstream fashion starting from the substation, and coordination rules are applied identifying the pattern of the primary-backup devices based on the depth-first search. T/C curves of various devices are handled by digitization for accuracy and various graphics and windows are adopted for user-friendly interface.

Modified Differential Protection for Transformers in Wind Farms

  • The liberalization of electricity market and environmental concerns are the major driving forces for the development of Distributed Generation (DG). The mode of grid-connected wind power generation is becoming popular and has matured as a reliable DG technology. The voltage generated by the wind generator is stepped up to the higher voltage by the transformers before connecting to the grid. Operating algorithm of the differential relays for transformer protection used in the wind farms need to be modified to take care of the dynamic nature of fault current caused by the intermittent nature of the wind power. An algorithm for the differential relay is proposed in which dual slope characteristics are adjusted with varying fault level situation according to the wind generator in service as well as with the wind speed. A case study conducted for a typical wind farm shows that the proposed method avoids mal-operation of the differential relay in varying wind power conditions.

  • Recently, advanced digital protection relays were developed in Japan. This improved relaying system for the next generation is expected to have higher performance for the discrimination of the fault, functions for multi-purpose use of acquired data, easy operation and maintance, and also have friendly man-machine interface. This paper describes the system configuration of the developed relay and its representive characteristics.

  • 본 논문은 저장 탱크용 임시전력설비를 보호하기 위한 목적으로 특히 변압기를 감시하고 절연파괴 등과 같은 고장을 차단하고 보호하기 위한 보호계전기 정정에 관한 연구이다. 전력계통에 단락 또는 지락고장 등과 같은 이상이 발생하였을 때 이를 검출하여 고장이 발생한 기기 및 설비를 신속하게 차단하고 전력계통으로부터 분리하여 전력공급에 지장이 없도록 하여야 한다. 전력계통의 이상 상태를 빠르고 정확하게 감지할 수 있는 보호계전기의 정정이 중요하다. 또한 보호협조를 위해 고장종류와 고장의 원인을 정확히 적용한 고장전류 계산이 보호계전기 정정에 가장 중요한 요소이다. 저장 탱크용 임시전력설비 보호를 위해 적용하는 과전류계전기, 지락과전류계전기, 부족전압계전기, 지락과전압계전기 등이 보호협조가 가능하도록 보호계전기 정정 방법에 대해 연구하였다.

신경회로망과 고장전류의 변화를 이용한 고장판별 알고리즘에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Algorithm for Fault Discrimination in Transmission Lines Using Neural Network and the Variation of Fault Currents)

  • When faults occur in transmission lines, the classification of faults is very important. If the fault is HIF(High Impedance Fault), it cannot be detected or removed by conventional overcurrent relays (OCRs), and results in fire hazards and causes damages in electrical equipment or personal threat. The fast discrimination of fault needs to effective protection and treatment and is important problem for power system protection. This paper proposes the fault detection and discrimination algorithm for LIFs(Low Impedance Faults) and HIFs(High Impedance Faults). This algorithm uses artificial neural networks and variation of 3-phase maximum currents per period while faults. A double lines-to-ground and line-to-line faults can be detected using Neural Network. Also, the other faults can be detected using the value of variation of maximum current. Test results show that the proposed algorithms discriminate LIFs and HIFs accurately within a half cycle.

원자력발전소 안전등급 계통 적용을 위한 디지털 상용기기 품질검증 (Commercial Grade Item Dedication of Digital Devices for Safety-related System in Nuclear Power Plant)

  • In the past, the analog protection relays have been widely used for the safety-related systems in the nuclear power plants due to their stability and reliability. Meanwhile, as the high performance digital system has been developed, the digital systems have been adopted in the non-safety systems. However, since the digital systems currently used in the non-safety systems were not developed according to Q-class standard, Commercial Grade Item Dedication (CGID) procedure should be performed in order to apply them to the safety-related system. The purpose of this paper is to describe the CGID procedure including the analysis of the hardware architecture as well as the software embedded in protective relay to apply to the emergency diesel generator in the nuclear power plant. The entire CGID procedure was performed strictly according to the international standard and regulations.

발전기의 고장 판별을 위한 웨이브릿 변환의 적용 (Application of Wavelet Transform for Fault Discriminant of Generator)

  • Generators are the most complex and expensive single element in a power system. The generator protection relays should to minimize damage during fault states and must be designed for maximum reliability. A conventional CDR(Current Differential Relaying) technique based on DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) filter have the disadvantages that the time information can lead to loss in the process of converting the signal from the time domain to the frequency domain. A WT(Wavelet transform) and WT analysis is known that it is possible with the local analysis of the fault and transient signal. In this paper, to overcome the defects in the DFT process, an application of WT for fault detection of generator is presented. This paper describes an selection of mother Wavelet to detect faults of generator. Using collected data from the fault simulation with ATPdraw, we analyzed the several mother Wavelet through the course of MLD(multi-level decomposition) using MATLAB software. Finally, it can be seen that the proposed technique using detail coefficient of Daubechies level 2 which can be fault discriminant of generator.

고주파를 이용한 송전선로의 사고 검출 및 판별에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fault Detection and Discrimination of Transmission Line using Fault-generated High Frequency Signals)

  • Most conventional protection relays are based on processing information in the spectrum that is close to or at power frequency. It is, however, widely known that faults on transmission lines produce frequency components of a wide range. High frequency signals caused by sudden changes in system voltage that occurs in the immediate post-fault period are generally outside the bandwidth of receptibility of most protection scheme. In this respect, a specially designed stack tuner is connected to the coupling capacitor of CVT, in order to capture the high frequency signals. Digital signal processing is then applied to the captured information to determine whether the fault is inside or outside the protected zone, and to discriminate the fault type. In this paper, modal transform is not applied to fault generated signals, because signals which are converted by modal transform are not have an information of each phase any longer. Instead, using peak voltage value of data windows is able to discriminate fault type. The paper concludes by presenting fault detection and discrimination of various faults on transmission line which are based on extensive simulation studies carried out on a typical 154kV Korean transmission line, using the EMTP software.
