Environmental concerns and shortage of petroleum have promoted considerable interest in the use of alternate fuels in stationary diesel engine. In this study, a heavy-duty, intercooler-turbocharged 6-cylinder stationary diesel engine was converted into stationary gas engine fueled with propane or natural gas for the cogeneration plants. One of the most important factors in the combustion features of a stationary gas engine is the fuel composition and operating parameters in terms of compression ratio, spark advance, and engine loads. Experiments with different fuel gas and load conditions were carried out with combustion pressure analysis and NOx measurement. Combustion analysis based on P-$\theta$ diagrams was also investigated by means of combustion duration and cycle variation. Compression ratio is 10.0 and ignition timing is set by using the gasoline setting as a base line and advanced toward BTDC. The results show that fuel composition and spark advance have dominant effects on combustion and NOx characteristics at operating conditions.

LPG has been well known as a clean alternative fuel for vehicles. Recently, several LPG engines for heavy duty vehicles have been developed, which can replace some diesel engines that are one of the main sources for air pollution in the urban area. Because cylinder bore of heavy duty LPG engine is larger than that of gasoline, the study of knock characteristics of LPG engine are needed. In this study, the knock characteristics were investigated with various engine speed, air excess ratios and LPG fuel compositions. Experimental results indicated that the Knock occurrence probability decreases with increasing engine speed and propane fraction of fuel. The Knock occurrence probability is highest at excess air ratio of 1 and decreases as the mixture strength became leaner.

A heat transfer model of the intake valve in a spark ignition engine is presented, which is calibrated with a number of the valve temperature profiles measured during engine warm-up for the gaseous fuel(propane). The valve is divided into four identical elements for which the assumption of lumped thermal mass is applied. The calibration is made so that the difference between the measued and simulated valve temperatures becomes minimal. Then the model is applied to the cases of the liquid fuel(indolene) to estimate the amount of the liquid fuel vaporized from the intake valve by assuming that fuel evaporation accounts for the deficit of the heat balance budget. The results of the model show quantitative contribution of each heat transfer source to the heat balance. The behavior of the calculated mass fraction of the fuel vaporized from the intake valve explains how the liquid fuel evaporate during engine warm-up. The mass fraction at warmed-up condition is closely related with the fraction directly targeted on the valve back by the fuel spray geometry.

DME is a good alternative fuel to reduce the smoke remarkably when used in a diesel engine, while problems concerned with low lubricity and high compressibility exist. In the present study, single cylinder DI diesel engine was operated with neat DME and DME blended fuels which are DME-diesel blended fuel and DME-propane blended fuel. The results showed that the power of the neat DME and DME blended fuels was the same as that of pure diesel oil, and the specific energy consumption slightly increased. In addition, smoke emission was considerably reduced with the increase of DME content up to zero level, but NOx emission was slightly increased.

In order to investigate the exhaust structure and secondary oxidation of unburned hydrocarbon (HC) in the exhaust port, concentrations of individual HC species were measured in exhaust process, the degree of oxidation were obtained. Using a solenoid-driven fast sampling system on single-cylinder research engine fueled with 94% propane, the profiles of unburned hydrocarbons (HCs) and non-fuel HCs with a propane fueled engine were obtained from several locations in the exhaust port during the exhaust process. The sampled gases were analyzed using a gas chromatography of HC species with 4 or lesser carbon atoms. The change of total HC concentration and HC fractions of major components through the exhaust port were discussed. The results showed that non-uniform distribution of HC concentration existed around the exhaust valve and changed with time, and that the exhaust gas exhibited nearly uniform concentration profile at port exit, which was due to mixing and oxidation. Also it could be known that bulk gas with relatively high HC concentration came out through the bottom of the exhaust valve. To estimate the mass-based degree of HC oxidation in the exhaust port from measured HC concentrations, a 3-zone diagnostic cycle simulation and plug flow modeling were used. The degree of oxidation ranged between 26 % and 36 % corresponding to the engine operation conditions.

For the purpose of obtaining a fundamental data which is needed to develope the port injection type charged LPLi engine system, we manufactured intake port injection system of liquid charging LPG and modified heavy duty single cylinder LPLi engine from heavy duty diesel engine. Engine output and emission characteristics were analyzed under variable air/fuel ratio and charging pressure. Since LPG is consisted of propane and butane, we investigated combustion characteristics using this two kinds of fuel. From the result of charging engine performance test, engine torque increase about 30% ∼ 40% with 0.3bar charging pressure. In low speed condition, as charging pressure increase, combustion stability improve ill lean bum condition, but, in high speed condition, combustion stability make worse in lean bum condition. We know that engine output decreased rapidly from the condition of air excess ratio 1.3. In addition, we measured emission characteristics under the lean bum and charging condition. From this experiment, we found that CO emission is out of the question in the range from stiochiometric to lean burn and charging condition, but charging pressure has influence on HC emission.

The effects of pressure and temperature on the autoignition of propane and n-butane blends were investigated using a rapid compression machine (RCM) , which is widely used to examine the autoignition characteristics. The RCM was designed to be capable of varying the compression ratio between 5 and 20 and minimize the vortex formation on the cylinder wall using a wedge-shaped crevice. The initial temperature and pressure of the compressed gas were varied in range of 720∼900 K and 1.6∼ 1.8 MPa, respectively, by adjusting the ratio of the specific heat of the mixture by altering the ratio of the non-reactive components (N$_2$, Ar) under a constant effective equivalence ratio (ø$\_$f/= 1.0) The gas temperature after the compression stroke could be obtained from the measured time-pressure record. The results showed a two-stage ignition delay and a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) behavior which were the unique characteristic of the alkane series fuels. As the propane concentration in the blend were increased from 20% and 40% propane, the autoignition delay time increased by approximately 41 % and 55% at 750 K. Numerical reduced kinetic modeling was performed using the Shell model, which introduced some important chemical ideas, represented by the generic species. Several rate coefficients were calibrated based on the experimental results to establish an autoignition model of the propane and n-butane blends. These coefficients can be used to predict the autoignition characteristics in LPG fueled Sl engines.

CARS(Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy) temperature measurement under engine-like condition was validated by measuring unburned gas temperatures of premixed propane-air flame in a constant volume combustion chamber. The measured temperatures were compared with predictions of 2 zone flame propagation model. End-gas temperatures were measured were measured by CARS technique in a conventional 4 cylinder DOHC spark-ignition engine fueled with PRF 80. Cylinder pressure was measured simultaneously with CARS signal and used as a parameter on fitting CARS spectrum to library of theoretical spectra. There was a good agreement between the measured temperature and adiabatic core temperature calculated from measured cylinder pressure. Significant heating by pre-flame reaction in the gas was observed in the late part of compression stroke.
Laminar burning velocities of propane- and iso-octane-air mixtures have been numerically modelled over a wide range of equivalence ratio, pressure and temperature. These correlations are applicable to the modelling of stratified charged combustion like that of lean bum and GDI engine combustion. The numerical models are based on the results calculated by PREMIX code with Sloane's detailed chemical reaction mechanism for propane and FlameMaster code with Peters' for iso-octane. Laminar burning velocity for two fuels showed a pressure and temperature dependence in the following form, in the range of $0.1{\sim}4MPa$, and $300{\sim}1000K$, respectively. $S_L={\alpha}\;{\exp}[-\xi({\phi}-{\phi}_m)^2-{\exp}\{-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)\}-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)]$ where ${\phi}_m=1.07$, and both of ${\alpha}$ and ${\xi}$ are functions of pressure and temperature. Compared with the results of the existing models, those of the present one showed the good agreement of the recent experiment data, especially in the range of lean and rich sides. Judging from the calculated results of the stratified charged combustion by using STAR-CD, the above modelling prove to be more suitable than the other ones.
Combustion chamber crevices in SI engines are identified as the largest contributor to the engine-out hydrocarbon emissions. The largest of crevice region is the piston ring pack crevice. To predict and understand the oxidation process of piston crevice hydrocarbons, a 3-dimensional numerical simulation method was developed. A engine shaped computational mesh with moving grid for piston and valve motions was constructed. And a 4-step oxidation model involving 7 species was used and the 16 coefficients in the rate expressions were optimized based on the results from a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism for the oxidation condition of engine combustion chamber. Propane was used as a fuel in order to eliminate oil layer absorption and liquid fuel effect.
