The postbuckling compressive strengths of $[0/90/\pm\theta]_s$ composite laminated cylindrical panels with various fiber angles and width-to-length ratios are characterized by the nonlinear finite element method. For the iteration and load-increment along the postbuckling equilibrium path a modified arc-length method in which the effect of failure can be considered is introduced. In the progressive failure analysis the maximum stress criterion and complete unloading model are used. Present finite element results show good agreement with experiments for $[0_3/90]_s$ cylindrical panel and $[0/\pm45/90/]_s$ plate. The postbuckling compressive strength of $[0/90/\pm\theta]_s$ composite laminated cylindrical panel is independent of the initial buckling stress but high in the panel with large value of the bending stiffness in axial direction. In the several cylindrical panels, it is observed that the prebuckling compressive failures occur and result into the collapse before the buckling.
The Very Large Marine Structure has been widely used new method of ocean space instead of method for reclamation Therefore, VLFS is proposed to coincide on such request. It can be established regardless of nature of soil and height of water, and stream of flow exists under the floating structure, there is seldom effect in natural environment. Fuertherrnore, it can do easily to do assembly and taking to pieces due to expansion or removal. Based on the regulation by class, VLFS have to possess more than enough structural strength against severe wave loading induced by green sea condition Therefore, There are performed structural simulation as well as experimental test about expected loading scenario in order to examine the safety of structure. Up to now, various examinations based on the strength limit value of the main structural material have been done based on the elasticity response analysis. However, there is little finding about the collapse behavior and the safety when the load that exceeds the collapse of the material acts. In the present study, we investigated the collapse behavior based on the ultimate limit state calculated by FE-analysis.
Truss type structures are attractive to a variety of engineering applications on earth as well as in space due to their high stiffness to mass ratios and ease of construction and fabrication. During the service life, an individual member of a truss structure may lose load carrying capacity due to many reasons, which may lead to collapse of the structure. An analytical and computational procedure has been developed to study the response of truss structures subject to member failure under static and dynamic loadings. Emphasis is given to the dynamic effects of member failure and the propagation of local damage to other parts of the structure. The methodology developed is based on nonlinear finite element analysis technique and considers elasto-plastic material nonlinearity, postbuckling of members, and large deformation geometric nonlinearity. The pseudo force approach is used to represent the member failure. Results obtained for a planar nine-bay indeterminate truss undergoing sequential member failure show that failure of one member can initiate failure of several members in the structure.

The rapid proliferation of oil/gas drilling and wind turbine installations with jack-up rig-formed structures increases structural safety requirements, due to the greater risks of operational collisions during use of these structures. Therefore, current industrial practices and regulations have tended to increase the required accidental collision design loads (impact energies) for jack-up rigs. However, the existing simplified design approach tends to be limited to the design and prediction of local members due to the difficulty in applying the increased uniform impact energy to a brace member without regard for the member's position. It is therefore necessary to define accidental load estimation in terms of a reasonable collision scenario and its application to the structural response analysis. We found by a collision probabilistic approach that the kinetic energy ranged from a minimum of 9 MJ to a maximum 1049 MJ. Only 6% of these values are less than the 35 MJ recommendation of DNV-GL (2013). This study assumed and applied a representative design load of 196.2 MN for an impact load of 20,000 tons. Based on this design load, the detailed design of a leg structure was numerically verified via an FE analysis comprising three categories: linear analysis, buckling analysis and progressive collapse analysis. Based on the numerical results from this analysis, it was possible to predict the collapse mode and position of each member in relation to the collision load. This study provided a collision strength assessment between attendant vessels and a jack-up rig based on probabilistic collision scenarios and nonlinear structural analysis. The numerical results of this study also afforded reasonable evaluation criteria and specific evaluation procedures.
The aim of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of ultimate the fatigue strength of hopper knuckles in merchant vessels carrying bulk cargo or LNG/LPG/ The ultimate strength test is undertaken on the hopper knuckle model, subject to end tip load. A series of fatigue tests are carried out on the hopper knuckle models varying the level of the nominal stresses. The elasto-plastic finite element analysis is performed to examine the distribution of hot spot stresses near weld toe and also the progressive collapse behavior of the test model. S-N curves are developed based on the fatigue test results.

In the braced excavations, careful consideration must be given to the risks of progressive collapse of the entire support system due to failure of a single member. The existing connection methods of the excavation support system results in many problems during construction. To overcome these, simple joint method is proposed in this study. The full scale test and the numerical analysis using finite element method were performed to verify the safety of them. As results, simple joint method was good effective to increase strength. And it was good effective to decrease in numbers of bolt. Also, new method is cheaper than existing connection methods and a good construction as well.

In this paper, the mechanics of ships in grounding with a forward speed is analyzed. A raking damage estimate model in grounding of ships is proposed. The accuracy and applicability of the model are verified by a comparison of experimental results. The progressive collapse analysis of damaged gull sections under vertical bending moments is described by using the ALPS/ISUM computer code. The procedure is applied to grounding simulation of a double hull tanker with a transverseless system.

The effect of column loss location on the structural response of steel moment resisting frames (MRF) is investigated in this study. A series of nonlinear static and dynamic analyses were performed to determine the resistance of a generic frame to an arbitrary column loss and detect the structural members that are susceptible to failure progression beyond that point. Both force-controlled and deformation-controlled actions based on UFC 4-023-03 and ASCE/SEI 41-06 were implemented to define the acceptance criteria for nine APM cases defined in this study. Results revealed that the structural resistance against an arbitrary column loss in the top story is at least 80% smaller than that of the bottom story. In addition, it was found that the dynamic increase factor (DIF) at the failure point is at most 1.13.

The initial buckling of thin walled structures does not result in immediate failure. This post buckling capability is used to achieve light weight design, and final failure of thin walled structure is called crippling. To predict the failure load, empirical methods are often used for thin walled structures in design stage. But empirical method accuracy depend on geometry. In this study, experimental, empirical and numerical study of the crippling behavior of I-section beam made of carbon-epoxy are performed. The progressive failure analysis model to simulate the crippling failure is evaluated using the test results. In this study, commercial software LS-DYNA is utilized to compute the collapse load of composite specimen. Six kinds of specimens were tested in axial compression where correlation between analytical and experimental results has performed. From the results, we have partially conclude that the flange width-to-thickness ratio is found to influence the accuracy of empirical and numerical method.
