  • Pig organ is thought to be the most suitable nonhuman organ for xenotransplanstation. However, one of the major constraints to using pig organs for xenotransplantation is human natural antibody-mediated hyperacute rejection (HAR). Elimination of a(1,3) galactosyltransferase (GGTA1) from the pig is expected to be a solution to the problem of hyperacute rejection. Many efforts have made characterization of GGTA1 in structure and function, improvement in the technique of DNA transfection of somatic cells and advancement of the pig NT, a specific modification has been made to one copy of the GGTAl gene by Missouri group in 2002 To date because homozygousity of the genetic modification has been achieved in this gene, the role of gala(1,3) gal specific natural antibody in HAR and the efficacy of xenotransplantation in a nonhuman primate model will be addressed. Of other genes are found to be involved in rejection of pig donors by primates, the technology will be available to modify those genes so that rejection can be overcome.

  • This study aims to analyze the shortening tendency of women's hanbok chogori (upper part of the Korean traditional dress) in the latter period of Chosun in three respects-socially, economically, and aesthetically. First, from the social point of riew, sexual role and social starus were examined. The strict sexual roles between males and females made the latter inferior to the former. The relatively lower sexual role had the woman look receptive and passive and wear a short and narrow kind of chogori. Also, the confusion of the social status system weakened the function of the costumes to differentiate social classes and, consequently, almost all classes wore short chogori. Second, the economic progress in the wake of the commerce-centered positivism at that time helped raise the economic status of the middle and low classes. As a result, with their social and economic status elevated, they tried to wear somewhat luxurious chogori. Third, aesthetically speaking, erotically-look-ing and much-shortened chogori derived from the weakened male-centered Confucian tra-ditional ethics in conflict with the humani-tarian positivism.

  • Josephson junctions were fabricated for several oxidation conditions and several junction sizes. Considering self-field effect suppressing the observed critical current (Ic) at large junctions, the observed Ic values were in good agreement with theoretical prediction. The predicted junction critical current for small junction limit was also confirmed by experiment. The dependence of the estimated Jc as a function of oxidation exposure showed that our junctions have lower Jc than other authors' at the same oxidation exposure. This is thought to be one of equipment-specific phenomena. Details of experimentals will be reported with brief discussion.

  • Hsp90, an evolutionarily conserved molecular chaperone, is involved in the folding, stabilization, activation, and assembly of a wide range of 'client' proteins, thus playing a central role in many biological processes. Especially, several oncoproteins act as Hsp90 client proteins and tumor cells require higher Hsp90 activity than normal cells to maintain their malignancy. For this reason, Hsp90 has emerged as a promising target for anti-cancer drug development. It is still largely unknown how Hsp90 can recognize structurally unrelated client proteins. However, recent progress in structural studies on Hsp90 and its interaction with various co-chaperones has broadened our knowledge of how the Hsp90 ATPase activity, which is essential for its chaperone function, is regulated and coupled with the conformational changes of Hsp90 dimer. This review focuses on the roles of various Hsp90 co-chaperones in the regulation of the Hsp90 ATPase cycle, as well as in the selection of client proteins. In addition, the current development of Hsp90 inhibitors based on the structural information will be discussed.

  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia-associated pulmonary hypertension (BPD-PH) is increasingly being recognized as a cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. Recently, BPD-PH has also been shown to have additional long-term negative effects on neurodevelopmental outcomes and right ventricular function. Several significant risk factors associated with the development of BPD-PH have been identified. A screening strategy for BPD-PH is needed for infants presenting more than one risk factor. In addition, an early echocardiogram within 14 days of age may be a useful tool to identify infants at high-risk for BPD-PH. We have reviewed recent progress in research concerning clinical characteristics, presentation, and outcomes of BPD-PH and have suggested direction for future studies.

  • A location-based service or LBS in a cellular telephone network is a service provided to the subscriber based on his current geographic location. This position can be known by user entry or a GPS receiver that he carries with him, but most often the term implies the use of a function built into the cell network that uses the known geographic coordinates of the base stations through which the communication takes place. One implication is that knowledge of the coordinates is owned and controlled by the network operator, and not by the end user. Location utility service provides two kinds of functions, geocoder and reverse geocoder. Geocoder converts an address into a coordinate and reverse geocoder changes a coordinate into an address. Because location utility service is the first step to progress LBS, various servises such as directory, routing, presentation, and etc require to access that. In this paper, we will describe the architecture of LBS platform and the concept and the role of location utility service.

  • As the real time multimedia data service has become available due to the rapid progress of computer and Internet technology, the users can enjoy the newly developed service, which is called Video On-Dem-and(VOD). However, most of service providers have not paid their attention much on the software for various service modes on VOD, but they are only concentrating un the hardware to provide with the high resolution video display. Therefore, the service providers are recently to pay more attention on the software to cope with the various demands of users than hardware. So this paper has designed and implemented the VOD service system for those demands. Since the VOD service system suggested by this paper enable off-line search functions through E-mail, the users can possibly get the necessary information from off-line Search without connecting to the server while the current VOD service can prominently help users to save the time and effort to sea고 and select the Video contents by using periodical current awareness service supported by PUSH technology and user oriented information booking and feedback service supported by SDI service.

  • Supply-Chain Management (SCM) was the integration of the activities that procure materials, transform them into intermediate goods and final products, and deliver them to customers. These activities include the traditional purchasing function, plus other activities that were important to the relationship with suppliers and distributors. P company was the first vendor in motor industry of Korea and had a flexible relationship with motor industry through SCM. However, p company had independent information with motor Industry and it caused many troubles In the operation of the P company. Considering these facts, authors had developed the inventory control system which was the part of order-fulfillment process and could make a progress in the operation of the inventory. The core factor of the developed inventory control system was the combination of the theoretical factors and the empirical factors. That is, the factors which were excluded in existing inventory theory revealed to be important.

  • Recently produced information on post-translational modifications makes it possible to interpret their biological regulation with new insights. Various protein modifications finely tune the cellular functions of each protein. Understanding the relationship between post-translational modifications and functional changes ("post-translatomics") is another enormous project, not unlike the human genome project. Proteomics, combined with separation technology and mass spectrometry, makes it possible to dissect and characterize the individual parts of post-translational modifications and provide a systemic analysis. Systemic analysis of post-translational modifications in various signaling pathways has been applied to illustrate the kinetics of modifications. Availability will advance new technologies that improve sensitivity and peptide coverage. The progress of "post-translatomics", novel analytical technologies that are rapidly emerging, offer a great potential for determining the details of the modification sites.
