  • In the extrusion process, the working material is forced to flow through a die with the desired profile. In general, the width of an extruded section is limited to about an inch less than the diameter of the round billet. But through the lip die, material is spreaded to produce a wider extruded section than the diameter of round billet. In this study, the extrusion process of an aluminum plate using the lip die is investigated. The width of the extruded plate is 450mm that is formed from the round billet with a diameter of 250mm. The flow characteristic through the lip die is considered to produce the wide-extruded plate with a small billet using rigid plastic FE analysis. Based on the result of FE analysis, an optimized design of the lip die is then proposed.

  • In square die extrusion, flow guide and ide land play important roles for controlling the metal flow in die design. In the present work, the flow guide and the die land are considered for the die construction. Based on ALE description , rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysid is carried out to assess the effects of process and die design parameters. The thermal state affects greatly the product quality in hot extrusion. in the present work, the temperature distribution is also analyzed in theframwork of rigid-viscoplastic finite element computation. As a computational example, hot square die extrusion with flow guide and die land has been analyzed for the profile of a H section.

  • The porthole extrusion process is a classic metal forming process to produce complex cross-section shaped aluminum profile. It is very difficult to design porthole die and extrusion process because of the complex shape of extrusion die and internal metal flow. The main variables in this process are ram speed, initial billet and tool temperature, and die shape. In general, the metal flow of porthole extrusion process can be divided into two steps. During the first step, the billet is divided into several parts in the porthole die bridge. During the second step, the divided billets are welded in the welding chamber. In the welding chamber, the level of welding pressure is very important for the quality of the final product. The purpose of this study is to increase the welding pressure in the welding chamber by using a two stage welding chamber. The porthole extrusion die was designed by using the Taguchi method with orthogonal array. The effectiveness of the optimized porthole die was verified by using the finite element analysis.

  • Porthole extrusion process is a very effective metal forming process to produce aluminum profiles with hollow sections. The structure of porthole extrusion die is very complex. In this process, the billet is divided by porthole bridge, and then the divided billet is welded in the welding chamber. The welding pressure in the welding chamber is very important. The higher welding pressure improves the quality of the aluminum profiles. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a new porthole extrusion die for improving the welding pressure in the welding chamber by using numerical analysis. The effectiveness of the new porthole extrusion die was verified by using numerical analysis. Through numerical analysis, the welding pressures in the welding chamber between the new porthole die and the conventional porthole die were compared with each other.

  • A simple kinematically admissible velocity field is proposed to drtermine the final-stage extrusion load and the average extruded length in the square-die forward extrusion of non-axisymmetric bars from circular billets. The proposed velocity field is applied to the square-die extrusion of trochoidal gear-shaped bars and rectangular-shaped bars, the profile function of a rectangular being approximated by using a Fourier series. Experiments have been carried out with hard solder billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of the extrusion load are in good agreements with the experimental results and there is generally reasonable agreements in average extruded length between theory and experiment.

  • This paper describes the analysis of extrusion process and integrity for a condenser tube which is a component of the heat exchanger in automobile and all conditioning apparatus. Recently, according to the development of analysis method using the computer, the numerical simulation have been applied to the 3-dimensional hot extrusion process with complex section area of the non-steady statement and then results of the analysis have been applied to optimal die design and process design. In this paper, firstly, the die design was performed for a condenser tube with a multi-hole section and the rigid-plasticity FE analysis performed of extrusion process. Secondly, we estimated metal flow of billet, extrusion load, welding pressure in chamber etc. and evaluated the pressure and elastic strain of the die land and mandrel tooth profile through a stress analysis of the die. Finally, the extrusion test was performed to estimate the validity of FE analysis. This paper confirmed that the designed extrusion die of the research is satisfactorily designed fur integrity of condenser tube.

  • The aim of this study is to develop the dies oven for energy-saving during the pre-heated process of extrusion dies. Applying high-efficiency near-infrared heater, single cell type dies oven was developed as a substitute for traditional chest type oven. Therefore the dies is individually heated uniformly to operation temperature so rapidly. By using the developed dies oven, electric-energy consumption of preheating extrusion dies reduced up to 30% and the waiting time in the oven also minimized up to 90min. In addition, the results have shown that it is possible to accurately control the dies temperature for improving the quality of extruded profile and to minimize die bearing oxidation and nitride layer degradation responsible for surface defects on the profile and shorter die life.
