Acculturation and the Mental Health Status of the Immigrants in South Korea : Convergence to the General Tendency? (이주민의 문화동화와 정신건강 : 일반적 경향으로의 융합인가?)

  • This study was conducted to study the effect of acculturation on the permanent resident and naturalized citizens' mental health status. The Survey Data of Foreign Residents in Korea 2012 was utilized. Independent variable was the acculturation level, measured by the duration of life spent in Korea and the level of Korean proficiency. The dependent variable was the mental health outcome. Initially, acculturation showed protective effect on mental health of immigrants. But after adjustment of control variables, the effect of acculturation disappeared. This result does not converge into the general trajectory of mental health status among immigrants regarding the level of acculturation. The experience of discrimination had outstanding negative effect, which suggests policy inception point.

The Effects of Authenticity Perception on Used Trading App Service Satisfaction

  • As the used trading market grows centered on online platforms, it is evolving from practical consumption to pursuing various forms of consumption value. Consumers purchase rare products, enjoy the transaction itself with consumers with the same preference, and investment or eco-friendly value consumption is also increasing. In this regard, the transaction of the second-hand transaction app service must have sincerity in order to respond to various consumption values. In addition, it is necessary to study what components the second-hand trading app service should aim for to secure authenticity and how the usefulness and ease of second-hand trading apps affect the relationship. The research used a questionnaire method to test hypotheses and surveyed 215 consumers in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who had purchased used clothing online within a year. Among them, 200 responses, excluding outliers, were statistically analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 22.0 as confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models. This study aims to determine the effect of the authenticity of the online used trading app service on the satisfaction of the used trading app service. To this end, based on the previous research results, the following research hypotheses were established and verified statistically. First, the authenticity of the online used trading app service will significantly impact the satisfaction of the used trading app service. Second, the usefulness of the used trading app service will have a moderating effect on the effect of the authenticity of the used trading app service on the satisfaction of the used trading app service. Third, the ease of the used trading app service will have a moderating effect on the authenticity of the used trading app service on the satisfaction of the used trading app service. As a result of the study, the authenticity of the used trading app service significantly affected the satisfaction of the used trading app service. Appeared to be The results of this study will help understand used transaction app services where consumption of used products occurs from the viewpoint of product circular use behavior and can be used as a strategic plan to promote the use of used transaction apps in the future.

Report on the External Quality Assessment Scheme of Hepatitis Viral Markers in Korea, (2016-2017) (간염바이러스 항원항체검사 신빙도조사 결과보고 (2016-2017))

  • As part of the immunoserology program of the Korean Association of External Quality Assessment Service, we organized two trials on the external quality assessment of hepatitis viral markers in 2016 and 2017. The hepatitis viral antigens and antibodies program consisted of 10 test items. We delivered two and three types of pooled sera specimens to 965 and 965 institutions for the first and second trials of external proficiency testing in 2016, respectively. The number of participating laboratories was 915 (94.8%) and 913 (95.0%) in the first and second trials in 2016, respectively. We also delivered three kinds of pooled sera specimens to 936 and 1,015 institutions for the first and second trials of external proficiency testing in 2017, respectively. The number of participating laboratories was 920 (98.3%) and 996 (98.1%) in the first and second trials in 2017, respectively. The most commonly tested items were hepatitis B surface antigen, followed by the antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen, anti-hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B envelope antigen, antibodies to hepatitis B envelope antigen, anti-hepatitis A virus and antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen. The most frequently used methods for detecting viral markers were the chemiluminescence immunoassay and the electrochemiluminescence immunoassay, but they yielded a few-false positive results due to the matrix effect. The immunochromatographic assay yielded false-negative results for anti-hepatitis A virus due to low sensitivity. Continuous improvement in the quality of viral hepatitis testing through participation in the survey seems necessary.

Analysis of Upper Limb Muscles Properties In Elite Swimmers Before and After Training (엘리트 수영선수들의 수중 훈련 전후의 상지 근육 특성 변화 분석)

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to verify the differences in muscle characteristics of elite level swimmers before and after a 2-hour practice session. Method: The study was conducted on 15 elite swimmers. Preliminary measurements for each muscle (Anterior Deltoid, Triceps Brachii, Biceps Brachii, Flexor Carpi Ulnaris) were taken using the MyotonPRO device before training. After approximately 2 hours of training, the same muscle areas were measured again. The collected data was analyzed through descriptive statistics and two-way 2×2 RG·RM ANOVA, and all statistical significance levels were set at α=.05. Results: After analyzing the characteristics of the Flexor Carpi Ulnaris (FCU) before and after training in both proficiency level swimmers (excellent, non-excellent), it was found that the interaction effect of group X repetition in muscle tension (F), muscle stiffness (S), and body recovery time (R) was statistically significant. Secondly, in the analysis of the Biceps Brachii (BB), the main effect of repetition in muscle tension (F), muscle stiffness (S), and body recovery time (R) was statistically significant. Furthermore, the interaction effect of group X repetition in muscle stiffness (S) and body recovery time (R) was statistically significant. Conclusion: The efficient use of FCU and BB suggests that it is an important factor distinguishing the performance of excellent and non-excellent swimmers in swimming. Therefore, if we develop and apply measures to efficiently utilize FCU and BB during training, it can help improve the performance of the athletes.

Developing English listening and speaking skills by using puppetry in elementary schools (초등영어에서 인형극을 활용한 듣기.말하기 능력 향상방안)

  • This paper is to help the students in elementary schools develop and improve their English listening and speaking skills by presenting effective teaching and learning techniques using puppetry. It is absolutely obvious that listening and speaking are very important skills for most EFL students. Using puppets in the classroom is a creative English teaching technique which can involve authentic, communicative language situations. Moreover, puppets appeal to children and can aid in lowering affective filters thereby creating a more comfortable learning environment. The study clearly showed that using puppets is feasible and enjoyable in elementary English classes. However, caution must be exercised in drawing and generalizing conclusions from this experience. The results of the experiment are as follows: First, using puppetry in the English class was found to have positive influence on students' affective domains (interst, attitude). Second, using puppets in the English classes was found to be efficient for improving students' English listening and speaking skills. Third, appropriate materials should be selected and well thought-out plans should be made to be successful English class using puppetry. Perhaps the most interesting line of future research is to use qualitative research to examine the effect of this technique on the teacher variable. Further research is recommended, especially on using puppetry for speaking proficiency and creating affectively comfortable learning atmospheres.

The effect of L2 experience on perception of Korean nasals

  • Twenty five English native speakers with two different L2 experienced groups and nineteen native Koreans heard both Korean word-initial nasals (/m/ and /n/) in three vowel contexts (low, mid, and high) produced by a native Korean speaker. The experiment examined the hypothesis that Korean nasals are more likely to be judged or perceived correctly by the L2-experienced English learners of Korean than the unexperienced counterparts. The result showed that L2 experienced group was more sensitive to effects of vowel height in judging the Korean nasals in which the perception of nasals before the high vowels was more subject to it. In addition, place of nasal articulation causes asymmetry relations - bilabial nasal /m/ is more likely to be perceived as plosives rather than alveolar nasal /n/. The study found that the L2 experience has a somewhat limited role in perceiving the nasals correctly in the word-initial position, especially before the high vowels, in that even the L2 experienced English subjects have difficulty in identifying the Korean nasals correctly in this environment. Nevertheless, low L2 proficiency might be accounted for the difficulty in the bilabial nasal identification observed by the L2 experienced group.

  • Since many design problems in the railroad, aerospace and machine structures involve considerations of the effect of cyclic loading, manufacturing and quality control processes much fully account for fatigue of critical components. Due to the sensitivity of the Paris law, it is very important to calculate .DELTA.K numerically to minimize the error of predicted fatigue life in cycles. However, it is shown that the p-version of FEM based on LEFM analysis is far better suited for computing the stress intensity factors than the conventional h-version. To demonstrate the proficiency of the proposed scheme, the welded T-joint with crack problems of box car body bolster assembly and a crack problem emanating from a circular hole in finite strip have been solved.

A Structural Equation Model on Mental Health of Korean Immigrants in Canada (캐나다 이민자의 정신건강 구조 모형)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to construct a structural equation model that would further explain the mental health status of Korean immigrants living in Canada. Methods: Survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted with 386 people in Canada (Vancouver and Toronto). Six instruments were used in this model. The analysis of data was done with both SPSS 14.0 for descriptive statistics and AMOS 5.0 for covariance structure analysis. Results: Based on the constructed model, physical health status, immigrant life stress, self esteem, and quality of life were found to have significant direct effect on mental health. In addition, factors such as physical health status, immigrant life stress, quality of life, English proficiency, family cohesion and social support were found to indirectly affect mental health. The final modified model yielded Chi-square=34.79 (p<.001), df=13, $x^2$/df=2.68, GFI=0.98, AGFI=0.94, NFI=0.95, PNFI=0.44, PGFI=0.35, RMSE=0.07 and exhibited good fit indices. Conclusion: This structural equation model is a comprehensive theoretical model that explains the related factors and their relationship with mental health in Korean immigrants. Findings of this study can contribute to the designing of an appropriate prevention strategy to further improve the mental health of immigrants in Canada.

The effects of pause in English speaking evaluation

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of utterance internal pause in English speaking evaluation. To avoid possible confusion with other errors caused by segmental and prosodic inaccuracy, stem utterances with two different length obtained from a native speaker were manipulated to make a set of stimuli tokens through insertion of pauses whose length and position vary. After a total of 90 participants classified into three proficiency groups rated the stimuli, the scored data set was statistically analyzed in terms of the mixed effects model. It was confirmed that predictors such as pause length, pause position and utterance length significantly influence raters' evaluation scores. Especially, a dominating effect was found in such a way that raters gradually deducted scores in accordance with the increase of pause duration. In another experiment, a tree-based statistical learning technique was utilized to check which of the significant predictors played a more influential role than others. The findings in this paper are expected to be practically informative for both the test takers who are preparing for an English speaking test and the raters who desire to develop more objective rubric of speaking evaluation.

The Development and Application of International Collaborative Writing Courses on the Internet

  • In this article, I discuss an International Collaborative Writing Course on the Internet (ICWCI) that focused on the learning effectiveness Korean EFL students (KEFLSs) perceived to be necessary to exchange with international EFL students (IEFLSs). The course development was based on an internet-based instructional module, applying widely accepted EFL theories for modern foreign language instruction: collaborative learning, process writing, project-based learning, and integrated approaches. Data from online discussion forum, mid-of-semester and end-of-semester surveys, and final oral interviews are conducted and discussed. KEFLSs and IEFLSs were questioned about (a) changes in attitude towards computers assisted language learning (CALL); (b) effect of computer background on motivation; (c) perception of their acquired writing skills; and (d) attitude towards collaborative learning. The result of this study demonstrated that the majority of ICWCI participants said they enjoyed the course, gained fruitful confidence in English communication and computer skills, and felt that they made significant progress in writing skills. In spite of positive benefits created by the ICWCI, it was found that there were some issues that are crucial to run appropriate networked collaborative courses. This study demonstrates that participants' computer skills, basic language proficiency, and local time differences are important factors to be considered when incorporating the ICWCI as these may affect the quality of online instructional courses and students' motivation toward network based collaboration interaction.
