Safety Assessment on Long-term Radiological Impact of the Improved KAERI Reference Disposal System (the KRS+)

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has developed geological repository systems for the disposal of high-level wastes and spent nuclear fuels (SNFs) in South Korea. The purpose of the most recently developed system, the improved KAERI Reference Disposal System Plus (KRS+), is to dispose of all SNFs in Korea with improved disposal area efficiency. In this paper, a system-level safety assessment model for the KRS+ is presented with long-term assessment results. A system-level model is used to evaluate the overall performance of the disposal system rather than simulating a single component. Because a repository site in Korea has yet to be selected, a conceptual model is used to describe the proposed disposal system. Some uncertain parameters are incorporated into the model for the future site selection process. These parameters include options for a fractured pathway in a geosphere, parameters for radionuclide migration, and repository design dimensions. Two types of SNF, PULS7 from a pressurized water reactor and Canada Deuterium Uranium from a heavy water reactor, were selected as a reference inventory considering the future cumulative stock of SNFs in Korea. The highest peak radiological dose to a representative public was estimated to be 8.19×10-4 mSv·yr-1, primarily from 129I. The proposed KRS+ design is expected to have a high safety margin that is on the order of two times lower than the dose limit criterion of 0.1 mSv·yr-1.

저준위 방사성폐기물 처분장에서의 기체 발생 평가 (Assessment of Gas Generation in Underground Repository of Low-Level Waste)

  • 방사성폐기물 처분후 처분장내에서는 금속의 부식과 셀룰로스 물질의 미생물 분해에 의한 기체가 발생하게 된다. 이 논문에서는 금속부식과 미생물 분해에 의해 발생되는 기체의 발생률을 예측하는 수학적 모델을 검토하고, 그로부터 저준위 방사성폐기물 처분장에 대한 기체 발생률을 예측하여 보았다. 금속성 물질의 부식은 3단계로 일어나며 그중 마지막 단계에서 H$_2$가 발생하게 된다. 셀룰로스 물질의 미생물 분해는 8가지 형태의 박테리아에 의해 일어나는 화학반응에 따라H$_2$, $CO_2$, CH$_4$등이 발생하게 되는데 이는 처분장내의 pH 및 몇몇 화학종의 농도에 따라 반응률이 결정되게 된다. 이 논문에서는 처분후 약10,000년 동안 발생되는 주요 기체의 발생률 및 누적발생 량을 예측하여 보았다. 평가 결과, 중저준위 방사성폐기물 처분장내에서 발생되는 기체는 H$_2$가 가장 많이 발생되는 것을 알 수 있었다.

WASTE CLASSIFICATION OF 17×17 KOFA SPENT FUEL ASSEMBLY HARDWARE

  • Metal waste generated from the pyroprocessing of 10 MtU of spent fuel was classified by comparing the specific activity of a relevant radionuclide with the limit value of the specific activity specified in the Korean acceptance criteria for a lowand intermediate-level waste repository. A Korean Optimized Fuel Assembly design with a 17${\times}$17 array, an initial enrichment of 4.5 weight-percent, discharge burn-up of 55 GWD/MtU, and a 10-year cooling time was considered. Initially, the mass and volume of each structural component of the assembly were calculated in detail, and a source term analysis was subsequently performed using ORIGEN-S for these components. An activation cross-section library generated by the KENO-VI/ORIGEN-S module was utilized for top-end and bottom-end pieces. As a result, an Inconel grid plate, a SUS plenum spring, a SUS guide tube subpart, SUS top-end and bottom-end pieces, and an Inconel top-end leaf spring were determined to be unacceptable for the Gyeongju low- and intermediate-level waste repository, as these waste products exceeded the acceptance criteria. In contrast, a Zircaloy grid plate and guide tube can be placed in the Gyeongju repository. Non-contaminated Zircaloy cladding occupying 76% of the metal waste was found to have a lower level of specific activity than the limit value. However, Zircaloy cladding contaminated by fission products and actinides during the decladding process of pyroprocessing was revealed to have 52 and 2 times higher specific activity levels than the limit values for alpha and $^{90}Sr$, respectively. Finally, it was found that 88.7% of the metal waste from the 17${\times}$17 Korean Optimized Fuel Assembly design should be disposed of in a deep geological repository. Therefore, it can be summarized that separation technology with a higher decontamination factor for transuranics and strontium should be developed for the efficient management of metal waste resulting from pyroprocessing.

데이터 리포지터리 인증 체계 분석 및 인증 전략에 관한 연구 - Coretrustseal을 중심으로 - (A Study on Data Repository Certification Scheme Analysis and Certification Strategy: Focused on Coretrustseal)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 데이터 리포지터리 인증 체계를 분석하고 Coretrustseal 인증을 추진 전략을 제안하는 것이다. 분석 대상 인증 체계에는 Coretrustseal, RatSWD, CLARIN certificate B, DIN 31644, ISO 16363, TDR 그리고 nestor 등이 포함된다. 그 중에서 Coretrustseal 인증은 타 인증의 기준 및 요구사항을 충족하고 있는 핵심 인증 체계이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 Coretrustseal 인증 추진 전략을 단계별로 제안하였다. 제안된 인증 추진 전략에는 국내 데이터 리포지터리를 운영 하는 기관에서 활용할 수 있도록 연구데이터 정책 및 가이드라인 관련 목록과 인증 신청서 예시가 포함되어 있다. 이러한 CTS 인증 추진 과정을 통해 각 기관에서는 연구데이터 정책 및 가이드라인을 확보할 수 있으며 CTS 인증을 획득하게 되면 해당 데이터 리포지터리에 대한 국제적인 신뢰성을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

RFID와 센서 데이터 처리를 위한 미들웨어와 EPCIS 통합 설계 (An Integrated Design of Middleware and EPCIS for RFID and Sensor Data)

  • RFID 태그 인식 정보와 센서 데이터는 지속적으로 변화하고, 위치에 따라 구분되며, 시간에 따라 변화하는 대량의 정보라는 면에서 유사한 자료라고 할 수 있으며, 두 자료가 함께 관리된다면 환경 변화에 따른 객체 인식 등의 융합 처리가 가능하다. RFID 미들웨어와 EPCIS 저장소가 통합된 시스템을 구현한다면 미들웨어의 기능과 저장소의 기능을 동시에 사용할 수 있으며, 미들웨어로부터 정보를 받아 가공 처리할 필요 없이 실시간 인식 정보 검색이 가능해진다. 본 논문에서는 일반적인 객체 인식과 환경 정보 변화에 의존하는 객체 검색을 실시간으로 가능하게 하기 위해, 장치로부터 정보를 지속적으로 읽어 데이터베이스에 저장하고, 수집된 자료를 기반으로 EPCglobal에서 표준으로 제안하는 ALE 기반 미들웨어와 EPCIS 저장소를 RFID와 센서 데이터를 함께 처리할 수 있도록 설계하고 구현한다.

Engineering-scale Test for Validating the T-H-M Behavior of a HLW Repository: Experimental Set-up

  • The thermo-hydro-mechanical (T-H-M) process is one of major issues in the performance assessment of a high level waste (HLW) repository. An engineering-scale test was planned and its experimental set-up has being installed, to validate the T-H-M behavior in the buffer of a reference disposal system. The experimental set-up consists of 4 major components: the confining cylinder with its hydration water tank, the bentonite block, the heating system, and the sensors and instruments. The monitoring and data acquisition system is employed to control the heater to maintain the temperature of $95^{\circ}C$ at the interface of the heater and bentonite blocks and to collect signals from sensors and instruments installed in the bentonite blocks.

  • In the present competitive organizational environment more organizations are implementing knowledge management initiatives to gain strategic advantage. One such initiative is that of implementing electronic knowledge repositories (EKR) which often leads to a rapid increase in the quantity of information employees have to process daily; raising concerns of employees being overloaded. This is especially true for current EKRs using distributive technology, enabling customizable individual workspaces which can result in loose knowledge structures. This paper identifies a new type of information overload (IO), extending the concept as occurring in both knowledge seekers and contributors and uses cognitive dissonance theory to provide evidence that IO can change employees' perception of EKR usage. This research paper provides the first empirical evidence that overload has no sufficient affect on EKR continuance intention directly, but has significant negative affect on the two main success measures; perceived usefulness and satisfaction of the system.

  • Integrating database views is an important step in the conceptual database design process. This paper develops a view integration support system by using a semantic object model. In order to determine the order of the integration, affinities among views and objects are analyzed by employing the vector space theory. Semantic conflicts such as naming and structural conflicts are then resolved. The resolution results are stored in a view repository. Objects and views are integrated and stored in this view repository until all views are considered. A prototype for the system is built and can be used in a client/server environment.

  • 현장에서의 체계적인 측정자료는 최적의 안전한 설계를 위한 중요한 정보라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 미국의 방사성폐기물 저장 시설인 Waste Isolation Pilot Plant(WIPP)에서 수행된 현장 측정 기법들에 대해 고찰하였다. 또한 지하구조물의 시간 의존적인 복잡한 거동을 이해하기 위해서 필요한 측정기기의 설치와 측정에 대하여 논의하였다.

The Swiss Radioactive Waste Management Program - Brief History, Status, and Outlook

  • Nagra was established in 1972 by the Swiss nuclear power plant operators and the Federal Government to implement permanent and safe disposal of all types of radioactive waste generated in Switzerland. The Swiss Nuclear Energy Act specifies that these shall be disposed of in deep geological repositories. A number of different geological formations and sites have been investigated to date and an extended database of geological characteristics as well as data and state-of-the-art methodologies required for the evaluation of the long-term safety of repository systems have been developed. The research, development, and demonstration activities are further supported by the two underground research facilities operating in Switzerland, the Grimsel Test Site and the Mont Terri Project, along with very active collaboration of Nagra with national and international partners. A new site selection process was approved by the Federal Government in 2008 and is ongoing. This process is driven by the long-term safety and feasibility of the geological repositories and is based on a step-wise decision-making approach with a strong participatory component from the affected communities and regions. In this paper a brief history and the current status of the Swiss radioactive waste management program are presented and special characteristics that may be useful beyond the Swiss program are highlighted and discussed.
