In this study, we developed an optical coherence tomography(OCT) using a sweep-source laser whose center wavelength is 1310 nm and a probe of hand-held type. The developed hand-held probe targets to diagnose the middle ear, so it is miniaturized for ease and convenience of control. For the first time, we performed in-vivo clinical experiments on tympanic membrane(TM) perforation patients not reported from previous studies about OCT. The high-resolution sectional images of tympanic membrane perforation can be obtained. There aren't many studies about diagnostic instrument of the middle ear and diagnosis with sectional image of the middle ear, so the developed OCT system and hand-held probe are applicable to tympanic membrane perforation and other pathologic diagnosis in the middle ear.
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) includes high voltage generator, electron gun, column, secondary electron detector, scan coil system and image grabber. Column includes electron lenses (condenser lens and objective lens). Condenser lens generates fringe field, makes focal length and control spot size. Focal length represents property of lens. Objective lens control focus. Most of the electrons emitted from the filament, are captured by the anode. The portion of the electron current that leaves the gun through the hole in the anode is called the beam current. Electron beam probe is called the focused beam on the specimen. Because of the lens and aperture, the probe current becomes smaller than the beam current. It generate various signals(backscattered electron, secondary electron) in an interaction with the specimen atoms. In this paper, we describe the result of research to develop the core elements for low-resolution SEM.

In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. An electro-conductivity probe was used to measure local volume fraction and bubble frequency. Since the gas was concentrated at the near the nozzle, the flow parameters were high near the nozzle. In general their axial and radial values tended to decrease with increasing distance. For visualization of flow characteristics, a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and a thermo-vision camera were used in the present study. The experimental results showed that heat transfer from bubble surface to water was largely completed within z = 10 mm from the nozzle, and then the temperature of bubble surface reached that of water rapidly. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was more developed near the wall than at bubble-water plume. Vortex flow in the bottom region was relatively weaker than that in the upper region.

Face recognition under controlled settings, such as limited viewpoint and illumination change, can achieve good performance nowadays. However, real world application for face recognition is still challenging. In this paper, we use Affine SIFT to detect affine invariant local descriptors for face recognition under large viewpoint change. Affine SIFT is an extension of SIFT algorithm. SIFT algorithm is scale and rotation invariant, which is powerful for small viewpoint changes in face recognition, but it fails when large viewpoint change exists. In our scheme, Affine SIFT is used for both gallery face and probe face, which generates a series of different viewpoints using affine transformation. Therefore, Affine SIFT allows viewpoint difference between gallery face and probe face. Experiment results show our framework achieves better recognition accuracy than SIFT algorithm on FERET database.
To analyze the image quality and disinfection effectiveness of alcohol gel application in ultrasound scans, we varied the application of alcohol gels with different alcohol content from ultrasound gels. The image quality analysis compared the Dead zone, axial and lateral resolution, sensitivity, and gray scale changes using the ATS-539 phantom, while the disinfection effectiveness analysis was performed by swabbing the three cover faces of convex probe used in clinical practice, collecting specimens and enrichment culture them for 24 hours before identification with Gram stain. image quality analysis showed that all items, regardless of the alcohol content, produced images that were not different from the ultrasonic gel application images, and pathogens such as staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus, and enterococcus were detected on all probes, and all were extinction by the application of alcohol gel. The application of alcohol gel during ultrasound examination was meaningful in terms of image quality maintenance and disinfection effect, and if the results of this study are further studied and commercialized, the application of alcohol gel as an alternative to ultrasound gel will be very useful in clinical examinations because it can consider not only image quality but also infection prevention.
Ultrasonography (US) is a recent technique that has proven to be useful for assessing muscle thickness and guiding the rehabilitation decision-making of clinicians and researchers. The purpose of this study was to determine the inter-rater reliability of the US measurement of transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) thicknesses for different probe locations and measurement techniques. Twenty healthy volunteers were recruited in this study. Muscle thicknesses of the transversus TrA, IO, and EO were measured three times in the hook-lying position. The three different probe locations were as follows: 1) Probe location 1 (PL1) was below the rib cage in direct vertical alignment with the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). 2) Probe location 2 (PL2) was halfway between the ASIS and the ribcage along the mid-axillary line. 3) Probe location 3 (PL3) was halfway between the iliac crest and the inferior angle of the rib cage, with adjustment to ensure the medial edge of the TrA. The two different techniques of thickness measurement from the captured images were as follows: 1) Muscle thickness was measured in the middle of the muscle belly, which was centered within the captured image (technique A; TA). 2) Muscle thickness was measured along a horizontal reference line located 2 cm apart from the medial edge of the TrA in the captured image (technique B; TB). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC [3,k]) was used to calculate the inter-rater reliability of the thickness measurement of TrA, IO and EO using the values from both the first and second examiner. In all three muscles, moderate to excellent reliability was found for all conditions (probe locations and measurement techniques) (ICC=.70~.97). In the PL1-TA condition, inter-rater reliability in the three muscle thicknesses was good to excellent (ICC=.85~.96). The reliability of all measurement conditions was excellent in IO (ICC=.95~.97). Therefore, the findings of this study suggest that TA can be applied to PL1 by clinicians and researchers in order to measure the thickness of abdominal muscles.

This paper addresses an image processing technique for the human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA chip to discriminate whether the probes are hybridized with the target DNA. HPV DNA chip is designed to determine HPV gene-types by using DNA probes for 22 HPV types. In addition to the probes, the HPV DNA chip has markers that always react with the sample DNA. The positions of probe-dots in the final scanned image are fixed relative to the marker- dot locations with a small variation attributable to the accuracy of the dotter and the scanner. The probes are quadruplicated to enhance diagnostic fidelity. frier knowledge including the marker relative distance and the replication information of probes is integrated into the template matching technique with normalized covariance measure. It was demonstrated that the employment of both of the prior knowledges can be accomplished by simply averaging the template matching measures over the positions of the markers and probes. The resulting proposed scheme yields stable marker locating and probe classification.

The SPM could image the most detailed microstructure of a sample in a wet and dry state by measuring the interaction between the atoms on the sample surface and the extremely sharp probe tip. The refined fibre exhibited large wrinkles formed by fibrillar bundles, the disintegrated fibres extensively showed “scale-like features”. By using the Non-Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (NC-AFM) and Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM) including Phase Detection Microscopy (PDM) and Force Modulation Microscopy (FMM), it was possible to investigate surface topography, surface roughness and mechanical property (hardness or visco-elasticity) of fibre surface in detail. The PDM and FMM images showed that the disintegrated only fibre displayed uniform mechanical properties, whereas the refined one did not. The surface roughness of pulp fibres was higher in refined fibres than in disintegrated fibres due to the presence of external fibrils. These SPM images would be used to provide visual evidence of morphological change of a single fibre created during mechanical treatments such as refining, drying, calendering and so on.

This paper describes an automatic measurement method for the in-line inspection of assembly tolerances of cathod ray electron guns. The method uses an optical microscope with a CCD camera as a probe. An automatic gap recognition algorthm with digital image processing and a new software autofocus algorithm based on using an optimal edge detector have been developed to improve the measuring accuracy. An inspection system has been proposed and practically implemented for in-line inspection to a real factory automation line. The inspection system consists of a gap inspection part and an eyelet. Total time consumed for inspecting all measuring items is about 10 seconds and the repeatability is below .+-. 5 .mu. m

We have carried out a basic experiment in order to develope a super high-resolution optical microscope which transcend the limitation of diffraction and the wavelength of lightwave. The image of this scope is composed by measuring the evanescent wave which is localized on the surface of the testing materials. A detecting probe was fabricated with a single mode optical fiber to be sharpened by the chemical etching, and drived by PZT. The standing wave of $0.33\mu\textrm{m}$ wavelength evanescent wave which was generated from the $0.78\mu\textrm{m}$-wavelength semiconductor laser was detected by the $0.5\mu\textrm{m}$-thickness optical fiber probe.
