Probable Evapotranspiration of Paddy Rice using Dry Day Index

  • To support some knowledge in planning irrigation system, short or long-term irrigation scheduling or determining irrigation reservoir capacity, it is necessary to estimate peak irrigation requirements and seasonal distribution of water demands for various return periods. In this paper Dry Day Index and Probable Evapotranspiration were evaluated to decide seasonal consumptive use of paddy rice for a design year using several decades' daily rainfall data and 5 years'('82~'86) actual evapotranspiration data, respectively. To obtain Dry Day Index that is defined as the number of probable dry days for a given period, Slade unsymmetrical distribution function was adopted. Dry Day Index was analysed for 5 and 10-day intervals. Each of them was evaluated with return periods of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 year. Their singnificance was tested by X$^2$ method. Based on these values, the Probable Evaportanspiration, that is the average daily ET both in dry days and rainy days during a given period, was estimated. Crop coefficient was also determined by the modified Penman equation proposed by Doorenbos & Pruitt.

  • This study is to determine seasonal consumptive use of water of a design year during growing period (June-September) for paddy rice in Suwon. To obtain Dry flay Index which is defined as the number of probable dry days occurring at a design year, Slade Partly Un- symmetrical Distribution Function was adopted. Dry Day Index was analysed with 5, 10 and 30 day-term. And each of them was evaluated with recurrence intervals of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 year using 49 years daily rainfall data('35-'83). Their singnificance were tested at 1% level by X$^2$ test. On the basis of these values, Probable Evapotranspiration (ET) which is the daily average ET for the sum of both ET on dry days and ET on rainy days were esti- mated using 5 years daily actual ET data(' 82-' 86). Their Crop Coefficients were also de- termined by the modified Penman equation(1977) proposed by Doorenbos & Pruitt.

Effect of Period of Record on Probable Rainfall Prediction (강우기록년한이 확률수문량 추정에 미치는 영향에 관한연구)

  • Long term precipitation gaging station record (58 years) was analyzed by progressive mean method to compare the estimated effective period of records for computing mean and probable values. Obtained results are as follows: 1. Fifty-eight years precipitation records at Jinju, Gyeong Sang Nam Do was analyzed by double mass analysis method. Result was appeared that the record was consistent with time. 2. The effective period of records for estimating mean values with the departure of 5% or less from the true mean are up to 33 years for annual precipitation, 20 years for annual maximum daily precipitation and 45 years for maximum successive dry days in summer season. 3. To estimate the probable values by Gumbel-Chow method within the departure of 5% level from true value, periods of 51 years, 38 years and 45 years were required for annual precipitation, annual maximum daily precipitation and maximum successive dry days in summer season, respectively.

A Study to Determine the Consumptive Use of Water for Upland Crops (전작물의 필요수량 결정을 위한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the consumptive use of water for red peppers and soy beans. The correlation between the soil moisture contents and the selected meteorological factors during the growing season was analyzed. Characteristics of the drought at Jinju, Yeosu, Gwangju, and Mokpo area were figured out in view of frequency analysis. The results obtained from this study could be used as a reasonable criteria for the estimation of the duty of water in the design of upland irrigation systems. Obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. Red peppers were grown at the three levels of soil moisture contents; 75 percent, 50 percent, and 25 percent, respectively. The red pepper grown at the 75 percent of soil moisture content showed the highest yield. The total evapotranspiration during the growing season from red peppers was 471. lmm, which was 86.6mm less than the pan evaporation. 2. The soy bean grown at 75 percent soil moisture content showed the highest yield, although there was no signicant difference in yields among treatments. The total evapotranspiration during the growing season from the soy bean was 342.8 mm, which was 119.2mm less than the pan evaporation. 3. Coefficients of consumptive use(k) and meteorological data are shown on Table-9. 4. The significant correlations between the evapotranspiration and the humidity and daily temperature range were observed. Results are shown on Table-11.. Evaporanspiration can be easily estimated from the humidity and daily temperature range by using the equation...... The variations of soil moisture content during the growing season at the soil depth of 5cm, 15cm, and 45cm are shown on Fig. 4~9. The results of the correlation analysis between the evapotranspiration from the crops and the soil moisture content are shown on Table-12. The estimated probab]e successive dry days in selected areas are shown on Table 13. Gumbel-Chow method was used to calculate the probable successive dry days. Further investigation are required to obtain the more detailed and reliable results.

Fermentation characteristics, chemical composition and microbial community of tropical forage silage under different temperatures

  • Objective: In tropical regions, as in temperate regions where seasonality of forage production occurs, well-preserved forage is necessary for animal production during periods of forage shortage. However, the unique climate conditions (hot and humid) and forage characteristics (high moisture content and low soluble carbohydrate) in the tropics make forage preservation more difficult. The current study used natural ensiling of tropical forage as a model to evaluate silage characteristics under different temperatures ($28^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$). Methods: Four tropical forages (king grass, paspalum, white popinac, and stylo) were ensiled under different temperatures ($28^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$). After ensiling for 30 and 60 days, samples were collected to examine the fermentation quality, chemical composition and microbial community. Results: High concentrations of acetic acid (ranging from 7.8 to 38.5 g/kg dry matter [DM]) were detected in silages of king grass, paspalum and stylo with relatively low DM (ranging from 23.9% to 30.8% fresh material [FM]) content, acetic acid production was promoted with increased temperature and prolonged ensiling. Small concentrations of organic acid (ranging from 0.3 to 3.1 g/kg DM) were detected in silage of white popinac with high DM content (50.8% FM). The microbial diversity analysis indicated that Cyanobacteria originally dominated the bacterial community for these four tropical forages and was replaced by Lactobacillus and Enterobacter after ensiling. Conclusion: The results suggested that forage silages under tropical climate conditions showed enhanced acetate fermentation, while high DM materials showed limited fermentation. Lactobacillus and Enterobacter were the most probable genera responsible for tropical silage fermentation.

Studies on Ripening Physiology of Rice plant. -I Difference in Ripening Structure between Jinheung and IR667 (수도(水稻)의 등숙생리(登熟生理)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) -I 진흥(振興)과 IR667의 등숙구조비교(登熟構造比較))

  • A local rice variety, Jinheung and newly bred IR667-Suwon 214 were grown in $5m^2$ concret pot with two spacings and two nitrogen levels and their ripening structure and its function were comparatively investigated to elucidate the causes of unusually low ripened grain ratio of IR667 lines. The following differences between two varieties were found. 1. Though IR667 had much lower ripened grain ratio (64%) than Jinheung (85%) grain yield(790 kg/10a) of IR667 was higher than that (760 kg/10a) of Jinheung. 2. Number of ripined grain per net assimiration rate (NAR) at 10 days after heading was a little higher in IR667 (6,490) than in Jinheung (6,360) consiting to lower grain weight ($29.9{\times}10^{-3}g$) in IR667 than $31.2{\times}10^{-3}g$ of Jinheung. But number of total grain per NAR was much higher (10,530) in IR667 than 7,290 of Jinheung indicating that it was the probable cause of low ripened grain ratio of IR667. 3. Extinction coeificient (K) was 0.115 in IR667 and 0.200 in Jinheung, thus IR667 could construct greater ripening structure per unit area. 4. Number of grain per LAI was decreased with increasing LAI at heading and the decreasing rate was similar for both IR667 and Jinheung. 5. Critical leaf area index at which crop growth rata (CGR) is maximum was 6.5 for IR667 and 5.2 for Jinheung. Below 5.2 of LAI net assimilation rate was always higher an Jinheung throughout the growing season. 6. The estimated optimum leaf area index having maximum grain yield was 7.4 for IR667 and 6.2 for Jinheung at 10 days after heading. However, actual leaf area index was 6.2 for IR-667 and 4.7 for Jinheung and these were even below critical leaf area index. 7. The decrease of LAI during ripening period was great in IR667 but photosynthesis per $m^2$ was decreased more rapidly in Jinheung. 8. Net assimilation rate (NAR) decreased with the increase of LAI at any time of ripening period. The decreasing rate of NAR with the increase of LAI was greater in IR667 with ripening. The greater decreasing rate of NAR in IR667 seemed to be attributed to low photosynthetic activity and high respiratory loss due to the requirement of higher optimum temperature of ripening. 9. Grain yield-ripened grain ratio curve showed less contribution of dry matter yield after heading to grain yield in IR667 than in Jinheung due to unfavorable ripening environment(specialy air temperature) indicating that yield of IR667 could most effectively increased through the improvement of ripening environment.
