We propose a pilot hopping scheme that improves the limited system capacity due to pilot contamination in multi-cell environment with large-scale antenna arrays at a base station, assuming the infinite number of antennas. In the conventional fixed pilot scheme, each user obtains the same signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) over a long period of time. Therefore, a user with strong interference has continuously low SIR which degrades its service quality. In the proposed pilot hopping scheme, different pilot signals are used for each time slot, and different amounts of interference are received every time. When such a pilot hopping technique is applied, the SIR fluctuates at every time slot. When the Hybrid Automatic Repeat & reQuest (HARQ) technique is applied in such a channel, the outage probability and transmission rate are improved. We show that there is the performance gain of the proposed scheme over the conventional scheme through computer simulations.

In this paper, we propose a novel relay selection technique which utilizes a priori decoding information at relays for buffer-aided successive relaying networks. In the conventional relaying schemes, a single relay pair is selected for receiving data from the source and transmitting data to the destination. In the proposed technique, however, all relays except the relay selected for transmitting data to the destination try to decode the received signal from the source, and they store the data if they succeed decoding. The proposed technique selects the relay such that it can succeed its own transmission and it maximizes the number of relays successfully decoding the data from the source at the same time. It is shown that the proposed relaying technique significantly outperforms the conventional buffer-aided relaying schemes in terms of outage probability through extensive computer simulations.

Radio frequency (RF) jamming is a denial of service attack targeted at wireless networks. In resource-hungry scenarios with constant traffic demand, jamming can create connectivity problems and seriously affect communication. Therefore, the vulnerabilities of wireless networks must be studied. In this study, we investigate a particular type of RF jamming that exploits the semantics of physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer protocols. This can be extended to any wireless communication network whose protocol characteristics and operating frequencies are known to the attacker. We propose two efficient jamming techniques: A low-data-rate random jamming and a shot-noise based protocol-aware RF jamming. Both techniques use shot-noise pulses to disrupt ongoing transmission ensuring they are energy efficient, and they significantly reduce the detection probability of the jammer. Further, we derived the tight upper bound on the duration and the number of shot-noise pulses for Wi-Fi, GSM, and WiMax networks. The proposed model takes consider the channel access mechanism employed at the MAC layer, data transmission rate, PHY/MAC layer modulation and channel coding schemes. Moreover, we analyze the effect of different packet sizes on the proposed jamming methodologies. The proposed jamming attack models have been experimentally evaluated for 802.11b networks on an actual testbed environment by transmitting data packets of varying sizes. The achieved results clearly demonstrate a considerable increase in the overall jamming efficiency of the proposed protocol-aware jammer in terms of packet delivery ratio, energy expenditure and detection probabilities over contemporary jamming methods provided in the literature.

Epidemiological models on disease spread attempt to simulate disease transmission and associated control processes and such models contribute to greater understanding of disease spatial diffusion through of individual's contacts. The objective of this study is to develop an agent-based modeling(ABM) approach that integrates geographic information systems(GIS) to simulate the spread of FMD in spatial environment. This model considered three elements: population, time and space, and assumed that the disease would be transmitted between farms via vehicle along the roads. The model is implemented using FMD outbreak data in Andong city of South Korea in 2010 as a case study. In the model, FMD is described with the mathematical model of transmission probability, the distance of the two individuals, latent period, and other parameters. The results show that the GIS-agent based model designed for this study can be easily customized to study the spread dynamics of FMD by adjusting the disease parameters. In addition, the proposed model is used to measure the effectiveness of different control strategies to intervene the FMD spread.

In this paper, we proposes a D-STTD(Double-Space Time Transmit Diversity) communication system with AMC scheme and analyzes its performance using simulation experiments. The AMC scheme selects an optimal channel coding rate and modulation scheme based on the channel response data for signal transmission, creating a balance between error rate and throughput to improve the overall system throughput and transmission quality. The D-STTD scheme complements the conventional STTD(Space Time Transmit Diversity) scheme, yielding about twice the throughput. The simulation results show that the probability of selecting a high MCS(Modulation and Coding Scheme) level increased as the SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) improved. Furthermore, the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme provided a more uniform throughput distribution throughout the entire SNR range compared to its counterpart which did not apply AMC scheme. Also, the maximum throughput of the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme was twice that of a conventional AMC communication system or a STTD communication system with AMC scheme.

In cognitive radio network (CRN), spectrum sensing is an elementary level of technology for non-interfering to licensed user. Required sample number for spectrum sensing is directly related to the throughput of secondary user and makes the tradeoff between the throughput of secondary user and interference to primary user. Required spectrum sensing sample is derived from required false alarm, detection probability and minimum required SNR of primary user (PU). If we make clustering and minimize the required transmission boundary of secondary user (SU), we can relax the required PU SNR for spectrum sensing because the required SNR for PU signal sensing is related to transmission range of SU. Therefore we can achieve efficient throughput of CRN by minimizing spectrum sensing sample. For this, we design the tradeoff between gain and loss could be obtained from clustering, according to the size of cluster members through game theory and simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper proposes a link adaptation method for Underwater Internet of Things (IoT), which reduces power consumption of sensor nodes and improves the throughput of network in underwater IoT network. Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) technique is one of link adaptation methods. AMC uses the strong correlation between Signal Noise Rate (SNR) and Bit Error Rate (BER), but it is difficult to apply in underwater IoT as it is. Therefore, we propose the machine learning based AMC technique for underwater environments. The proposed Modulation Coding and Scheme (MCS) prediction model predicts transmission method to achieve target BER value in underwater channel environment. It is realistically difficult to apply the predicted transmission method in real underwater communication in reality. Thus, this paper uses the high accuracy BER prediction model to measure the performance of MCS prediction model. Consequently, the proposed AMC technique confirmed the applicability of machine learning by increase the probability of communication success.

There have been many studies on IEEE 802.15.4 for home area networks(HAN) in Smart Grids. Existing unslotted or slotted IEEE 802.15.4 has almost not met strict conditions of the U.S. Department Of Energy(DOE). This study proposed a improved algorithm that reduces collisions, delay time and changes in the delay time. For this purpose, numbers were given to nodes to make the transmission in the order of the node numbers. Since the probability of the occurrence of collisions would decrease compared to random transmission if the nodes were given numbers, Backoff time was set at 0. In the proposed Numbered-Unslotted-ZeroBackoff algorithm, when the packet size was 133 octets and less than 180 packets per second occurred, it was found that packet delivery ratio was over 99.99%, and that all the maximum delay, the mean delay and the minimum delay were less than 0.02 seconds. This paper could confirm that the algorithm proposed in this study met the strict conditions of the DOE.

Integrating energy storage into electlic power system has long been recognized as a way to maximize a utility's g generation and transmission capacity, Electlic power can be stored during off-peak periods and then recovered during p peak conditions to offset the need for larger generation and transmission capacity, Currently large-scale SMES for the p purpose of energystorage which can be also se$\pi$ed by battery storage or flywheel system has been developed, and near f future it will be integrated into power grids, This paper presents an investment analysis on large-scale SMES which c can determine its optimal size in power systems, In operation model. least generation cost for energy storage in SMES a and its mar밍nal capacity cost can be calculated using the discreteness of probability distribution for power availability I Investment decisions are made by the maximum p디nciple and the case study shows the optimal operation and realistic i information on the proper size of large-scale SMES in power systems.

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) have been developed independently. Then, many researchers have studied UMTS-WLAN interworking architecture for the efficiency. However, the transmission capacity difference of two networks causes the transmission quality degradation. Therefore, this paper proposes a UMTS-WLAN interworking architecture for Quality of Service (QoS). The proposed architecture is based on tight coupling and dynamically guarantees QoS by the mobility prediction method. The proposed architecture is simulated by ns-2. Performance experimental results show that the proposed architecture reduces the handover dropping probability comparing with the existing method and enhances the amount of receiving packets comparing with the method without guaranteeing QoS.
