  • We have carried out all-sky imaging of OH Meinel, $O_2$ atmospheric and OI 557.7 nm airglow layers in the period from July of 2001 through September of 2005 at Mt. Bohyun, Korea ($36.2^{\circ}$ N, $128.9^{\circ}$ E, Alt = 1,124 m). We analyzed the images observed during a total of 153 clear moonless nights and found 97 events of band-type waves. The characteristics of the observed waves (wavelengths, periods, and phase speeds) are consistent with internal gravity waves. The wave occurrence shows an approximately semi-annual variation, with maxima near solstices and minima near equinoxes, which is consistent with other studies of airglow wave observations, but not with those of mesospheric radar/lidar observations. The observed waves tended to propagate westward during fall and winter, and eastward during spring and summer. Our ray tracing study of the observed waves shows that majority of the observed waves seemed to originate from mesospheric altitudes. The preferential directions and the apparent source altitudes can be explained if the observed waves are secondary waves generated from primary waves that have been selected by the filtering process and break up at the mesospheric altitudes.

  • Influence of trace amount of Ca addition on the corrosion resistance was comparatively investigated in solutionized Mg-4%Zn and Mg-4%Zn-0.1%Ca alloys. In as-cast state, the alloys were characterized by primary ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ dendrite with MgZn intermetallic compound particles. After solution-treatment, both alloys consisted of single ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ phase by dissolution of the compound particles into the matrix. It was found from the immersion and electrochemical corrosion tests that the Mg-4%Zn alloy had better corrosion resistance than the Mg-4%Zn-0.1%Ca alloy. Morphological and compositional analyses on the surface corrosion products indicate that the incorporation of Ca oxide with low PBR value into the surface corrosion products would be responsible for the decreased corrosion resistance of the Ca-containing alloy.

  • As the portion of information systems (IS) budget to the total government budget becomes greater, the cost estimation of IS development and maintenance projects is recognized as one of the most important problems to be resolved for scientific and efficient management of IS budget. Since IS budget makes much effect on the delivery time, quality and productivity of IS projects, the exact cost estimation is also necessary for the successful accomplishment of IS projects. The primary concern in the cost estimation of IS projects is software cost estimation, which requires the measurement of the size of softwares. There are two methods for sizing software : line-of-code approach, function point model. In this paper, we propose a function-point-based model for estimating software cost. The proposed model is derived by collecting about fifty domestic IT projects in public sector and analyzing their relationship between cost drivers and development effort. Since the proposed model is developed by simplifying the function point model that can be used only when detailed user requirements are specified, it can be also applied at project planning and budgeting phase.

  • In this work, an optimization method of Friction Tuned Mass Damper (FTMD) parameters is presented. Friction tuned mass dampers (FTMD) are attached to mechanical structures to reduce their vibrations with dissipating the vibratory energy through friction between both bodies. In order to exploit the performances of FTMD, the determination of the optimum parameters is recommended. However, the presence of Coulomb's friction force requires the resolution of a non-linear stick-slip problem. First, this work aims at determining the responses of the vibratory system. The responses of the main mass and of the FTMD are determined analytically in the sticking and sliding phase using the equivalent damping method. Second, this work aims to optimize the FTMD parameters; the friction coefficient and the tuned frequency. The optimization formulation based on the Ricciardelli and Vickery method at the resonance frequencies, this method is reformulated for a system with a viscous damping. The inverse problem of finding the FTMD parameters given the magnitude of the force and the maximum acceptable displacement of the primary system is also considered; the optimization of parameters leads to conclude on the favorable FTMD giving significant vibration decrease, and to advance design recommendations.

  • A microbial consortium, TMC7, was enriched for the degradation of natural lignocellulosic materials under high temperature. TMC7 degraded 79.7% of rice straw during 15 days of incubation at $65^{\circ}C$. Extracellular xylanase was effectively secreted and hemicellulose was mainly degraded in the early stage (first 3 days), whereas primary decomposition of cellulose was observed as of day 3. The optimal temperature and initial pH for extracellular xylanase activity and lignocellulose degradation were $65^{\circ}C$ and between 7.0 and 9.0, respectively. Extracellular xylanase activity was maintained above 80% and 85% over a wide range of temperature ($50-75^{\circ}C$) and pH values (6.0-11.0), respectively. Clostridium likely had the largest contribution to lignocellulose conversion in TMC7 initially, and Geobacillus, Aeribacillus, and Thermoanaerobacterium might have also been involved in the later phase. These results demonstrate the potential practical application of TMC7 for lignocellulosic biomass utilization in the biotechnological industry under hot and alkaline conditions.

  • $Y_2O_3$:Eu red phosphor was prepared by microwave synthesis. The crystal phase, particle morphology, and luminescent properties were characterized by XRD, SEM, and spectrofluorometer, respectively. The prepared $Y_2O_3$:Eu particles had good crystallinity and strong red emission under ultravioletet excitation. The crystallite size increased with calcination temperature and satuarated at $1200^{\circ}C$. The primary particle size initially formed was varied from 30 to 450 nm with microwave-irradiation (MI) time. It was found that the emission intensity of $Y_2O_3$:Eu phosphor strongly depends on the MI time. In terms of the emission intensity, it was recommended that the MI time should be less than 15 min. The emission intensity of $Y_2O_3$:Eu phosphor prepared by microwave syntehsis strongly depended on the crystallite size of which an optimal size range was 50-60 nm.

  • The flow and combustion dynamics in the ignition and ramjet sustainer phase of an integrated rocket-ramjet(IRR) engine are investigated. The physical model includes the entire engine flowpath, from the freestream in front of the inlet to the exit of the exhaust nozzle. The flowfield obtained from a rocket booster study is used as the initial condition for the present analysis, so that the complete operation history of the engine can be obtained. The analysis for the primary factor governing flame propagation during the ignition and the key mechanisms for driving and sustaining the flow oscillations are performed.

  • The effects of a class of nonlinear Tuned Mass Dampers on the aeroelastic behavior of SDOF systems are investigated. Unlike classical linear TMDs, nonlinear constitutive laws of the internal damping acting between the primary oscillator and the TMD are considered, while the elastic properties are keept linear. The perturbative Multiple Scale Method is applied to derive a set of bifurcation equations in the amplitude and phase and a parametric analysis is performed to describe the postcritical scenario of the system. Both cubic- and van der Pol-type dampings are considered and the dependence of the limit-cycle amplitudes on the system parameters is studied. These new results, compared with the previously obtained bifurcation scenario of a SDOF aeroelastic oscillator equipped with a linear TMD, show a detrimental effect on the maximum limit-cycle amplitude reduction of the nonlinear TMD. However, the analyses evidence that in the parameter region away from the perfect tuning condition the nonlinear connection can be used to tune the system with an enhancement of the limit-cycle amplitude reduction.

  • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) are rare and heterogenous tumors and surgery to remove the primary tumor is the mainstay of treatment for resectable disease. However, curative surgery is often not feasible, because half of patients with pNET have metastases at the time of diagnosis. Palliative dubulking surgery and liver-directed therapies are appropriate options for these patients. Streptozocin-based regimens are standard, although temozolamide-based treatments are rapidly gaining wide clinical application. Somatostatin analogs are mainly indicated in hormonally active tumors to ameliorate symptoms. In addition, anti-tumoral activity has been proven in well-differentiated NETs. Recently, there has been tremendous progress in the molecular biology of pNETs; thereby, the efficacy of sunitinib and everolimus in the treatment of patients with metastatic pNETs has been proven by large placebo-controlled phase III trials. Currently, there are no definitively proven predictive biomarkers to evaluate response to medical therapies in patients with pNET. Therefore, further studies are needed to individualize and optimize their management. This article reviews systemic chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and anti-secretory treatments for the management of patients with unresectable or metastatic pNETs, summarized in the light of recent advances.

  • Internally Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor(ICFBC) has been used for the incineration of waste sewage sludge. In this study hydrodynamic characteristics of two phase flow have been studied in a riser section of ICFBC. A lab-scale riser(l/5 scale of pilot plant) is designed and SiC (Geldart type B) is used for solid particles. Experiments are performed by controlling the fluidization parameters including superficial velocity, particle diameter and secondary air to primary air ratio for determination of solid holdup profiles in the riser. Our flow regime during experiments mainly belongs to the onset of turbulent regime(for d_{p}:300{\mu}m) and fast fluidization regime(for d_{p}:100{\mu}m). Superficial velocities of each regime are well agreed with results obtained by other researches. The results show that the axial solid holdup distributions calculated by measuring differential static pressures in the riser are found to show a basic profile described by a simple exponential function. As the particle size decreases, solid holdup along the riser is more uniformly distributed. To prove these experimental results, numerical calculations are being performed.
