  • This study was performed to investigate the preventive effect of KDD against lead toxicity. KDD of 133, 266, 532 and 1,064 mg/kg were administered twice to the rats of Sprague-Dawley strain and then 300 mg/kg lead acetate was given to times, respectively. 1. The accumulation effects of KDD against to lead showed the changes of lead concentration by time variation. But, no statistical significance were showed on 8 and 10 weeks for kidney, spleen, 8 weeks for liver, and 4, 6 and 8 weeks for duodenum. In the femur, statistical significance existed during the whole experimental period. The relatively high concentration of lead detected in the feces of the experimental group means that KDD facilitated excretion of lead. 2. The histopathological effect of KDD against lead showed cytomegaly, karyomegaly, inclusion body, urinary cast and hemosiderin of kidney in the experimental group I (Pb 300 mg/kg). Recovery of KDD administrated group was inclined to increase by KDD concentration. But, spleen's histopathological recovery of KDD aginst to lead did not show as much as kidney. In conclusion, this study revealed the preventive effect of KDD against lead toxicity and its mechanism inferred to facilitate lead excretion in feces following hinderance of lead absorption in the gastric-intestine and organs.

  • This study was conducted to integrate the results of studies which evaluated or identified the risk factors of CVD(cerebrovascular disorders) for Koreans. We retrieved the literature published in Korean by manual search and the English literature by Medline database to identify studies on the relationship between reported risk factors and CVD conducted for the Korean from 1980 to August, 1997. Hypertension and total serum cholesterol were selected as subjects of quantitative meta-analysis on risk factors of CVD in Koreans. The overall effect sizes of the risk of CVD due to hypertension and total serum cholesterol were calculated by common odds ratio(OR) and average standardized mean difference, retrospectively. Before the integration of each effect sizes into common effect sizes, the heterogeneity tests were conducted. Also, sensitivity tests were conducted for the estimated common effect sizes. Regarding hypertension and CVD, a total of 9 epidemiologic studies were identified with a total of 2,271 cases of CVD. The overall OR of hypertension associated CVD was 4.10(95% confidence interval[CI] 3.56 to 4.71). The OR of hypertension associated with hemorrhagic CVD and ischemic CVD were 6.56(95% CI : 4.92 to 8.80) and 3.28 (95% CI : 2.77 to 3.90), retrospectively. The OR of hypertension in relation to hemorrhagic CVD was significantly higher than that of hypertension in relation to overall CVD or ischemic CVD. Regarding total serum cholesterol and ischemic CVD, total 9 epidemiologic studies were identified with a total of 843 cases of ischemic CVD. Average mean difference as an effect size was 0.76, which was judged an important value according to Cohen's criteria. Our data suggested that hypertension was an important risk factor of overall CVD and its subtypes, and that the total serum cholesterol was associated with ischemic CVD in Koreans. For the lack of reliable prospective studies, however, we concluded that further research designed longitudinally would be required in this area.

  • To evaluate the effect of Kam Doo-extract (KDE) on organophosphorous (OP)intoxication in mouse, this research was conducted. KDE prescribed with the equal weights of both Padix Glycyrrizae and Simen Glycine was extracted in water at 100$^{\circ}$C for 2hr, and concentrated in a vacuum evaporator. Animmal used in this research was ICR-strained male mice (bodyweight: 20 ~ 25g), and induction material for OP intoxication was DDVP(Dichlovos). Toxicity parameters used to evaluate KDE-preventive effect on DDVP were cholinesterase activity, and protection index of KDE against LDso values of DDVP. As the results, KDE prevented the inhibition of cholinesteranse activity due to DDVP-treatment, and inhanced the protecion index. Consequently our experimental data show the KDE will be useful as an preventive agent in respect that KDE is safe and effective against OP intoxication in mouse.

  • To elucidate the preventive effect of oriental medicine Gami-Ondamtang(GO) on stress, we investigated the physiological change of rats which were applied immobilization stress. For immobilization stress, rats were placed in restrainer for 12 hours a day for 3 days. During application of stress, body weight of rats was measured. After sacrifice, 8 organs were taken for measurement of organ weight. Brain was sectioned into 4 parts that are Frontal Cortex, Corpus Striatum, Hypothalamus and Hippocampus. Each part was homogenated and its catecholamine and serotonin contents were measured with HPLC. In our study, stress mainly induced increase of concentration of neurotransmitters in brain without other significant physical change of rats. GO inhibited stress induced changes of neurotransmitter content in brain.

  • Banggi, Banggi Whanggi Tang and Gami Jodeung San have been used to prevent and treat arteriosclerosis in oriental medicine. In order to investigate preventive and therapeutic effects of its crude drugs, this research was studied in cholesterol induced hypercholesterolemia rabbits. The rusults were as follows. 1) By concurrent administeration of Banggi or Banggi Whanggi Tang with cholesterol, serum total cholesterol contents were increased more slowly than control group. But in the case of Gami Jodeung San, serum total cholesterol contents were increased as well as control group. 2) By administration of Banggi Whanggi Tang or Gami Jodeung San on induced hydercholesterol rabbits, serum total cholesterol contents were decreased faster than control group. According to this result, it is suggested that Banggi and Banggi Whanggi Tang have preventive and therapeutic effects on hypercholesterolemia rabbits and that Gami Jodeun San has not preventive effect but therapeutic effect.

  • The Mechanism for sorting out the covariance effect is known as the covariance analysis. The sorting out of regression and correlation effect is an obvious application of the covariance analysis. The result of Do population by age groups (15 ages interval) from 1966 Census and from 1970 Census has been applied to analyzing covariability by the analysis of covariance. The results are as follows. (1) The signicance of the regression of 1970 population on 1966 population is assured as F=116.5 (2) There is a significant difference between mean of each age group. (F=88.1) (3) There is very little evidence of significant heterogeneity of regression between age groups. (F=0.72)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the preventive effect of ginseng on acetaldehyde-induced acute toxicity in mice . Compared to the control group, treatment with acetaldehyde inhibited the hepatic cytosolic xanthine oxidise activity with increase in dose. The inhibition of enzyme activity was not changed after dialysis. Pretreatment with ginseng butanol fraction prevented the inhibition of enzyme activity by acetaldehyde. In conjunction with the our previous results (Yakhak Hoeji, 29, 18 (1985)), these results suggest that the most likely mechanism for the observed preventive effects of ginseng against the acetaldehyde-induced acute toxicity may be the decrease hepatic acetaldehyde level.
