As the social interest in medical care has increased and the awareness and autonomy of patients have increased, the importance of communication skills with patients has been increasingly emphasized in providing high quality medical services. In medical education, such education has become an important area in medical school and lifelong medical education, with studies showing that communication skills can be improved through education and training, and that this learned communication skills can be maintained after becoming a doctor. The importance of communication education and research for dental college students is growing as practical examination on communication skills will also be introduced in dental license tests from 2021. Therefore, we aimed to find out the educational goals and educational methods of United States in which these studies are conducted and applied before our country, and compare them with Korean's current educational goals and methods, so that we can explore the desirable direction of education for dental college students in the future.

The practice pattern of pediatric dentistry has been changing for the last several decades. This change might be influenced by several factors such as development in dental materials and socioeconomic changes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the changing trends of patient distribution and treatment pattern of pediatric dentistry. Patient distribution and practice trends from 2006 to 2015 at the department of pediatric dentistry of Seoul National University Dental Hospital were reviewed. From 2006 to 2015, the proportion of new patient increased from 12.49% to 20.56%. The average age of new patients decreased. In 2006, restorative treatment had highest percentage, followed by preventive treatment, orthodontic treatment, surgical treatment, and pulp treatment. In 2015, preventive treatment had highest percentage, followed by restorative treatment, orthodontic treatment, surgical treatment and pulp treatment Frequency of general anesthesia increased more than 5 times for last 10 years. The proportion of insurance treatment decreased until 2009, and after 2010 it increased steadily.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of public preventive dental healthcare services named the "Dental Preventive Health Services for Children" (DPHSC) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in Korean children. Of the total 20,802 beneficiaries in 2018, 110 10-year-old elementary school students were randomly selected and were requested to complete a survey using the Korean version of Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) questionnaire before and after participating in DPHSC. Overall, 107 participants completed the pre- and post-survey. COHIP scores and clinical results such as numbers of decayed and missing teeth, malocclusion, and oral hygiene status from dental examination were statistically analyzed and the reliability and the validity of the responses were verified. There was a significant clinical increase in mean overall COHIP scores following DPHSC (p < 0.001, effect size 1.05). Children with decayed and missing teeth demonstrated poor OHRQoL. In conclusion, DPHSC can improve the OHRQoL of 10-year-old children.
Purpose: Vitamin D deficiency may cause bone loss and increased inflammation, which are well-known symptoms of periodontal disease. This study investigated whether serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels are associated with periodontal disease status and tooth loss. Methods: Cross-sectional data from 5,405 individuals aged ≥50 years (2,253 males and 3,152 females) were obtained from the 2008-2010 Dong-gu study, a prospective cohort study of risk factors for chronic diseases. Periodontal examinations were conducted to evaluate the number of remaining teeth, the periodontal probing depth (PPD), the clinical attachment level (CAL), and bleeding on probing. The percentages of sites with PPD ≥4 mm and CAL ≥4 mm were recorded for each participant. The severity of periodontitis was classified using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Periodontology case definitions. Serum 25(OH)D levels were classified as reflecting severe deficiency, deficiency, insufficiency, or sufficiency. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to assess the associations of serum 25(OH)D levels with periodontal parameters and the number of remaining teeth after adjusting for confounders including age, smoking status, alcohol consumption status, month of blood collection, and physical activity. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between serum vitamin D levels and severe periodontitis. An overall statistical analysis and a stratified analysis by sex were performed. Results: Overall, the rates of severe deficiency, deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency were 6.5%, 67.9%, 22.4%, and 3.2%, respectively. After adjustment for confounders, vitamin D levels were directly associated with the number of remaining teeth, an association that was significant in males, but not in females. Sufficient serum 25(OH)D was associated with a low frequency of severe periodontitis. Conclusions: This population-based cross-sectional study indicates that low serum 25(OH) D is significantly associated with tooth loss and severe periodontitis in Koreans aged 50 years and older.
Introduction: This study intended to identify the current oral health care status and demand of care workers for oral health education. Methods: A survey was distributed to care workers working in 11 nursing homes for older people located in the Chungcheongdo Province. Of those distributed, 217 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. To analyze the collected data, a frequency analysis, t-test, and one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) were performed using SPSS version 18.0. Results: The demand for an educational course on the 'Management of Oral Health Care for the Aged People' had a score of 4.22 points(full marks were 5.0 points), whereas the score for the necessity for control of oral health was 4.29 points. The control of oral health for the aged people suffering dysphagia scored 4.27 points, whereas the control of oral health for older people who have dementia was 4.27 points. The score for a course on the nutritional control for aged people having difficulties in masticating foods was 4.27. Conclusion: It is clear that the development of educational courses and standardized manuals for care workers on aspects of oral health care is necessary. Therefore, it would be desirable to develop institutional infrastructure for dental hygienists to educate care workers on oral health.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the professionalism identity and related factors in dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 347 dental hyfienists from March 5 to May 31, 2015. Except incomplete 39 answers, data were analyzed by frequency analysis, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 22.0. The questionnaire comprised 25 items including professionalism scale by Hall, Snizek, and Anderson by Likert 5 point scale. Results: Professionalism scale revealed self-regulation($3.65{\pm}0.58$), service conviction($3.64{\pm}0.62$), skills and training($3.21{\pm}0.70$), sense of professional vocation($3.20{\pm}0.65$), and thought about professional group($3.08{\pm}0.78$). The professionalism identity by general characteristics showed significant differences and there were positive correlations in main factors. The identity level was influenced by internal factors rather than economic compensation. Conclusions: There were positive correlation in main factors. The identity level was influenced by internal factors.
The purpose of this article was to compare the fluoridation effect via individual tray with other professional methods. In oder to compare the fluoridation effect, 40 extracted human teeth was divided into 4 groups(each group was composed of 10 teeth) and the surface hardness of each group was tested in untreated, after fluoridation, after fluoridation and etching by 10% lactic acids. group I: no fluoridation(control) group II : fluoridation with 123%APF group III : fluoridation by iontophoresis with 2% NaF group IV : fluoridation by individual tray with 4% SnF2 gel Surface hardness was measured with Micro hardness tester(Shimadzu Co. Japan), Data analysis was conducted using the repeated measures ANOVA test. The results were as follows: 1. Four tested groups demonstrated nearly the same SMH in extracted state. 2. The SMH after fluoridation showed $330.57{\pm}139.09kg/mm^2$ in group IV, $221.79{\pm}187.48kg/mm^2$ in group II, $186.43{\pm}53.13kg/mm^2$ in group III. So the SMH of group IV, II were was significantly increased(p<0.01). 3. The SMH of group II, III, IV after acid etching was higher than the control group(p<0.01). 4. The SMH between group II, III, and IV after acid etching was not different significantly.

Results: Necessity for dental hygienist-related medical law revision accounted for 92.4% and 85.4% of dental hygienists replied that specialized dental hygienist system must be established. The reasons for medical law revision were as follows; roles and education of medical technicians (60.6%), settlement of medical legal problems (48.0%), cooperation with other organizations (29.0%), political negotiations (17.4%), and national consensus (9.5%). The score for 'possible to get legal protection by the system establishment of roles and work scope of dental hygienists' was 4.11 of 5 points. Conclusions: It is important to establish the job scope of dental hygienist. The revision of dental hygienist-related law will help to enhance the status of dental hygienists as professional medical technicians in the future.
The objective of this study is to identify the relationship of dietary habits and health habits with dental caries subjective symptoms and to present data on nutritional education related to oral health. The subjects of this study are 334 teachers at pre-schools. The subjects of the study were selected using the convenience sampling method. Surveys were taken with the self-entry questionnaire method. It was found that dental caries subjective symptoms were higher among study subjects who ate appetizers frequently through the day, consumed more milk and other dairies and sugars, drank alcohol more, did less exercise, smoked, and had less sleep time. Systematic diet control and nutritional education must be strengthened to form proper dietary habits and health habits for preventing dental caries.
