  • Cancer prevalance and incidence is increasing with aging of populations and age is a critical factor in decision-making for anti-cancer treatment. However it is believed that chronological age is not enough to guide management in elderly cancer patients. Multidisciplinary evaluation and comprehensive geriatric assessment has gained importance regarding the treatment selection especially for definitive anti-cancer therapy recently. We here aimed to analyse the effect of the comprehensive geriatric assessment parameters on radiotherapy toxicity and tolerability in a series of geriatric cancer patients in Turkey.

  • Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) caused by periodontal disease is a relatively common disease with a prevalance rate of 30~55%. It is one of the reasons for periodontal treatment of patients. PTM occurs when various factors related to the position of the tooth are altered and clinical features of PTM include facial flaring, diastema, proximal tilting, rotation, and extrusion of teeth. The purpose of this study was to assess the treatment of teeth of hopeless prognosis through the practice of modified intentional replantation on pathologic migrated tooth. This study presents cases using modified intentional replantation for the treatment of pathologic tooth migration caused by severe periodontitis. Modified intentional replantation is a technique that prepares extraction socket by using an implant drill. Based on 3 cases performed with modified intentional replantation, an improvement of clinical periodontal indicators such as probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing, tooth mobility, and pathologic teeth migration was observed after surgery. Also, the patients were satisfied with the functional and esthetic improvement.

  • Study of dentofacial structure relationships relative to TMJ internal derangement is required to increase the predictability of TMJ internal derangement. But few studies have been reported. The purpose of this study is to reveal any correlation of dentofacial characteristics with TMJ internal derangement by lateral cephalometric analysis. Patients were devided into two groups. (1) Symptomatic patients with TMJ internal derangement (2) Asymptomatic volunteers with no TMJ internal derangement. Twenty symptomatic patients with TMJ internal derangement(7male, 13female) were selected from our clinic and had undergone a standarized clinical examination, panorama, transcranical view, TMJ tomography. Twenty asymptomatic volunteers(9male, 11female) were selected from our clinic with no pain, no limitation of motion. All subjects had undergone lateral cephalometric analysis. The results were obtained as follows. 1. No significant difference between ID and normal group is detected in cranial base. 2. Maxilla position of ID group is located more posterioly than normal group. 3. Mandible position of ID group is located more posteriorly than normal group and facial profile is hyperdivergent. 4. Posterior facial height of ID group is less than normal group thus facial profile is hyperdivergent. The patients, as mentioned, have a high prevalance of ID thus it should be careful in TMJ ID diagnosis and treatment.

  • A survey was conducted to determine the prevalance of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) on fish farms in Korea and the epidemiology of IPNV infection in the farmed rainbow trout. In total, 43 pools of rainbow trout with apparent signs of viral infection from five provinces were obtained and analyzed. Evident cytopathic effects, including karyopycnosis and cell destruction, were observed in CHSE (chinook samlmon embyro)-214 cells infected with the virus isolates. Of these, ten viral isolates were assumed to be IPNV based on biophysical properties. RNA analysis revealed that the isolates contained two-segmented RNA genomes, further indicating that the viral isolates are IPNV. Antigenic comparison of the IPNV isolates identified three distinct serological groups separable by the cross-neutralization test. Of the ten IPNV isolates, six could be classified as strain DRT, two as strain Ab, and two as strain VR299. We were not able to isolate new strain of IPNV or any isolate serologically similar to the standard strain Sp.poraceae and families of the Agaricales, they are genetically more related to the Polyporaceae. These results are consistent with morphological characters observed in those mushrooms. However, it is premature to conclude taxonomic status Ganoderma species in the present study employing small sample size.

  • Seventy wild rats were caught from Seoul city, Kyonggi, Kangwon, Honam, and yongnam provinces. All of them were in same species, Rattus norvegicus, except two R rattus from Kyonggi province. Seventy sera from wild rats were studied by immunofluorescent antibody assay for evidence of infection by spotted fever group rickettsia. The antidody prevalance was 37.14%(26/70) for spotted fever group rickettsia. The sero-prevalence rates for spotted fever group rickettsia antibody was the hightest in Kyonggi province with 55.56%(10/18), yongnam province with 50.00%(10/20), Kangwon province with 25.00%(2/8), Seoul city with 18.75%(3/16), and Honam province with 12.50%(1/8). The sero-positive rates difference between sexes were higher in female with 46.15%(12/26) than in male with 31.81%(14/44) for spotted fever group rickettsia. Twenty six of 68 Rattus norvegicus with antibody for spotted fever group rickettsia were in subadult with 50.00%(6/12), young adult with 38.89%(7/18), middle-aged adult with 35.29%(6/17), and old adult with 33.33%(7/21). No antibody was detected from R rattus.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate not only the variability in the timing and amount of the maximum pubertal spurt in cranial base and mandible, but also its interrelationship with the timing of peak height velocity. This study was carried out by analysing biannual serial lateral cephalometric radiographs of twenty-six males and twenty-one females who were taken from 8.5years to 16.5years old of mean age, according to the established land-marks and linear measurements. The results of this study were summarized as follows. 1. Prevalance of the maximum growth spurt more than 80 percentage was occurred in all measurements of cranial base and mandible, except posterior cranial base length in the female. 2. In all measurements of cranial base and mandible, the maximum spurt was occurred earlier in the female than the male while it was greater in male in all measurements except ramal height. 3. In body height measurement, the peak height velocity was occurred 2 years earlier for the female(11.0 years old) than the male(13.0 years old). 4. The timing of maximum spurt in anterior cranial base length and total mandibular length in both sexes and ramal height in the female were coincided with PHV. The maximum spurt was occurred in both sexes in all measurements 2 years before or after PHV, except mandibular body length and posterior cranial base length the in female. 5. In all ages, there was significant correlation between the total mandibular length and ramal height, and was also correlation between total cranial base length and anterior cranial base length(P<0.05). However, there was no significant correlation between the ramal height and mandibular body length. In addition, there was also no any correlation between the anterior cranial base length and posterior cranial base length in all ages(P>0.05).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical and histological features of odontogenic keratocyst Patients and Methods: A retrosective review of 100 patients who were diagnosed as odontogenic keratocyst by hitological findings during the period of January 2000 and December 2005 in the Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery Pusan National University was consecuted. For each patient, age, sex, location of lesion, initial diagnosis by radiographic features, treatment procedure, hitologic findings and recurrance rate were evaluated. Results: In this study, OKC has male prevalance to female by 1.38:1, and most likely occurs during third decade. The most common site of lesion was mandibular ramus region(34.6%) and the most common symptom was swelling(50%). The most common initial diagnosis by radiographic findings was OKC and cyst enucleation was the most common treatment method. The recurrance rate was 28% and existence of daugther cyst is thought to be most convincing factor for prediction of recurrence. Conclusion: In this study, total recurrence rate was 28% and existence of daugther cyst is thought to be most convincing factor for prediction of recurrence. But, since 97% of patients were treated by enucleation and adjuntive excision, further styudy is need about concordance of recurrence rate with surgical method.
