Ion beam (IB)-induced alignment of inorganic materials has been investigated intensively as it provides controllability in a nonstop process for producing high-resolution displays[1][2]. LC orientation via ion-beam (IB) irradiation on the nitrogen doped diamond like carbon (NDLC) thin film deposited by physical deposition method-sputtering was embodied. The NDLC thin film that was deposited by sputter showed uniform LC alignment at the 1200eV of the ion beam intensity. The pretilt angle of LC on NDLC thin films was measured with various IB exposure time and angle. The maximum pretilt angle were showed with IB irradiation angle of $45^{\circ}$ and exposure time of 62.5 sec, respectively. To show NDLC thin film stability in high temperature, thermal stability test was proceeded. The uppermost of the thermal stability of NDLC thin film was $200^{\circ}C$. In this investigation, the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of LC on NDLC thin film were measured.
We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a-C:H thin film as working gas at 30W rf bias condition. A high pretilt angle of about $5^{\circ}$ by ion beam(IB) exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high LC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface as working gas at 30W rf bias condition can be achieved.
We have studied the alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) on homeotropic polymeric surface that is scanned using an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip by optical polarizing microscopy and computer simulation. The scanned areas on one substrate are 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$, and 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and this substrate is assembled to another substrate coated. with homeotropic polymer. The fabricated micro-LC cell using two substrates does not show any hysteresis and disclination lines inside the nano-rubbing areas, while changing voltage up and down. This indicates that the pretilt angle exists in the areas, thereby forming a hybrid LC configuration. From the experimental and computer simulation results, we can understand that the AFM rubbing clearly changes surface status of homeotropic alignment layer and causes the pretilt angle to an initial scanning direction.
Blending effects for generating a pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface were studied. Also, we investigated the EO performances for the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using this homeotropic blended PI surface. A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed advanced VA-$\pi$ cell on a homeotropic blended PI surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time, and a high contrast ratio.

A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. However, a small decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with main chain type was measured. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA- $\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a Carbon Nitride (NDLC) thin film. NDLC thin film exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. A high pretilt angle of about $9.9^{\circ}$ by ion beam (IB) exposure on the NDLC thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment is achieved by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface at annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. The alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface can be achieved.
In this paper, the LC alignment characteristics of the NDLC thin film deposited by PECVD and sputtering were reported respectively. The NDLC thin film deposited using sputter showed uniform LC alignment at the 1200 eV of the ion beam intensity and pretilt angle was about $2^{\circ}$ while the NDLC thin film deposited using the PECVD showed uniform LC alignment and high pretilt angle at the 1800 eV of the ion beam intensity. Concerning the ion beam intensity, uniform LC alignment of the NDLC thin film deposited by the sputtering was achieved at the lower intensity. And the pretilt angle of the NDLC thin film deposited by sputter was higher than those of NDLC thin film that was deposited using the PECVD. The uppermost of the thermal stability of NDLC thin film was $200^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, NDLC thin film deposited by the PECVD showed stability at high temperature without defects, compared to NDLC thin film deposited by the sputter.
We have investigated that the high pretilt angle of the NLC, 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), was observed on rubbed polythiophene (PTP) surfaces with alkyl chains with more than 10 carbon atoms; it is attributed to the surface-excluded volume effect by the alkyl chain lengths between the LCs and the PTP surfaces. Next, we investigated that the odd-even effect of the polar anchoring strength in 5CB on rubbed PTP surfaces with alkyl chain lengths has been successfully evaluated. The anchoring strength of 5CB for rubbed PTP surfaces with odd-number is weak compared with even-number up to the 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain; however, odd-number is strong compared with even-number above 7 carbon atoms. The weak anchoring strength of 5CB is approximately $1\times10^{-3} (J/m^2$) on rubbed PTP surface with 7 carbon atoms; it is relatively strong anchoring strength. Consequently, we conclude that the odd-even effects of the polar anchoring strength in NLCs are strongly related to the characteristics of the polymer and observed clearly for short alkyl chain lengths.
We studied nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film deposited $45^{\circ}$ oblique by rf magnetic sputtering system. Pretilt angle and thermal stability characteristic as well as NLC alignment effect were investigated. A uniform liquid crystal alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film was achieved and pretilt angle was about $90^{\circ}$. The thermal stability of the $SiO_x$ thin film was sustained by $200^{\circ}$.

The effect of the temperature dependence of the smectic layer spacing in the smectic-A (SmA) phase on the formation of defects in the ferroelectric smectic-$C^{\ast}$ ($SmC^{\ast}$) phase is investigated with x-ray scattering technique. The study is based on thin parallel-aligned surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells with two different alignment conditions, high pretilt $SiO_x$, alignment and low pretilt polyimide films. It is found that defects observed in the $SmC^{\ast}$ phase have much more profound dependence on the layer changes and chevron formation in the SmA phase than in the $SmC^{\ast}$ phase. We find that thermal layer expansion with decreasing temperature in the SmA phase suppresses the formation of defects observed in the SmC phase.
