Prestress force identification (PFI) is crucial to maintain the safety of prestressed concrete bridges. A synergic identification method has been proposed recently by the authors that can determine the prestress force (PF) and the excitation force simultaneously in prestressed concrete beams with good accuracy. In this paper, the ability of this method in the application with prestressed concrete box-girder bridges is demonstrated. A reasonable assumption is made to capture the similarity of the dynamic behavior of the prestressed concrete box-girder bridge and a beam under a certain loading scenario, and the feasibility of this method for application in a prestressed box-girder bridge is affirmed. A comprehensive laboratory test program is conducted, and the effects of PF, excitation, measuring time and uncertainties are studied. Results show that the proposed method can predict the PF and the excitation force in a prestressed concrete box-girder accurately and has a great robustness against uncertainties.
The theoretical basis and the main results of a design procedure, which attempts to provide the optimal layout of ordinary reinforcement in prestressed concrete beams, subjected to bending moment and shear force are presented. The difficulties encountered in simulating the actual behaviour of prestressed concrete beam in presence of coupled forces bending moment - shear force are discussed; particular emphasis is put on plastic models and stress fields approaches. A unified model for reinforced and prestressed concrete beams under axial force - bending moment - shear force interaction is provided. This analytical model is validated against both experimental results collected in literature and nonlinear numerical analyses. Finally, for illustrating the applicability of the proposed procedure, an example of design for a full-scale prestressed concrete beam is shown.
Ring beam is the main anchorage zone of the tendons in the nuclear power prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV). Its safety is crucial and has a great influence on the overall performance of PCCV. In this paper, two half-scale ring beams were tested to investigate the mechanical performance of the anchorage zone in the PCCV under multidirectional pressure. The effect of working condition with different tension sequences was investigated. Additionally, a half axisymmetric plane model of the containment was established by the finite element simulation to further predict the experimental responses and propose the local reinforcement design in the anchorage zone of the ring beam. The results showed that the ultimate load of the specimens under both working conditions was greater than the nominal ultimate tensile force. The original reinforcement design could meet the bearing capacity requirements, but there was still room for optimization. The ring beam was generally under pressure in the anchorage area, while the splitting force appeared in the under-anchor area, and the spalling force appeared in the corner area of the tooth block, which could be targeted for local strengthening design.
Ensuring the designed prestress force is very important for the safety of prestressed concrete bridge. The loss of prestress force in tendon could significantly reduce load carrying capacity of the structure. In this study, an automated prestress-loss monitoring system for prestressed concrete girder using PZT-interface and wireless impedance sensor node is presented. The following approaches are carried out to achieve the objective. Firstly, wireless impedance sensor nodes are designed for automated impedance-based monitoring technique. The sensor node is mounted on the high-performance Imote2 sensor platform to fulfill high operating speed, low power requirement and large storage memory. Secondly, a smart PZT-interface designed for monitoring prestress force is described. A linear regression model is established to predict prestress-loss. Finally, a system of the PZT-interface interacted with the wireless sensor node is evaluated from a lab-scale tendon-anchorage connection of a prestressed concrete girder.
In the replacement of bearing system of bridges, the jacking work to secure work spaces may cause damage of the superstructure, hence the behavior of superstructure by the jacking force must be considered. Especially, in prestressed concrete I-type girder bridges, considering the stress concentration at the girder and the load redistribution of superstructure, the allowable jacking force and jacking sequence have to be determined. In this study, an analytical method is proposed to calculate the jacking force and overall jacking sequence for the replacement of bearing system without any damage to the superstructure. The stress concentration at the girder and load redistribution of the deck due to jacking force are considered to compute the allowable jacking force for each girder and overall jacking sequence for girders in the deck. Using the solution algorithm developed in this study, the optimum jacking sequence and required jacking force for the prestressed concrete I-type gilder bridge having the standard sections are calculated.
This study investigated the effects of prestressing force on the natural frequency of concrete beams considering changes in the self-weight of the beam. For this, a finite element formulation was derived to account for the increase in the stiffness of a beam-tendon system due to the axial force and deformation induced by prestressing of the tendon. The developed finite element formulation was validated with the data obtained in laboratory experiments. The experimental natural frequencies of the small prestressed concrete (PSC) beam specimens were consistent with those obtained using the proposed method. The first natural frequency increased almost linearly as the prestressing force increased. The proposed method was then applied to four actual PSC bridges typically employed in the field. Different from the laboratory specimens, the first natural frequencies of the actual PSC bridges barely changed or increased with increasing prestressing force. The results of an analytical parametric study showed that the increase in the natural frequency strongly depended on the magnitude of the prestressing force relative to the total weight of the structure. Thus, the variation in the natural frequencies of the actual PSC bridges with high total weight relative to the prestressing force was negligible due to the application of the prestressing force.
Although many structures. with high strength concrete have been recently constructed, the flexural behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams with high strength concrete is not exactly defined. This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural strength of the high strength concrete beams. Five large scale beams simply supported were tested and measured. Each beam was loaded by two symmetrical concentrated loads applied at 1.25m from the center of span. The concrete strength, the prestressed force and longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio vary from beam to beam. From the experimental tests, the flexural strength from tests is larger than the nominal flexural strength of codes. Moreover, the initial crack-load is affected by the prestressed force and the crack width and spacing are controlled by the longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio.

To improve the seismic behavior of composite column with high strength concrete-filled steel tubular in bridge engineering, four column specimens, including one specimen with vertical prestressing force and three specimens with tri-directional prestressing force, were conducted under low cyclic loading. Test parameters including axial compression ratio, degree of vertical prestressing and existence of prestressed steel strips were emphatically analyzed. Experimental results revealed that applying tri-directional prestressing force to column with high strength concrete-filled steel tubular produced more beneficial behavior in terms of ductility, energy-dissipation and self-centering capacity over that of specimens only with vertical prestress. Moreover, ultimate bearing capacity of composite column was improved with increase of degree of vertical prestress and external axial force, while ductility would be reduced. External axial force showed slight influence on the self-centering behavior. Finally, a calculation equation for predicting the shear capacity of the tri-directional prestressed composite column was proposed and the accuracy of the calculated results validated by experimental data.
In the prestressed concrete structures, the effective prestressing force of tendon is basically most important item for structural safety and serviceability. The frictional loss is one of the major items for determinating the effective prestressing force and depend on the construction accuracy of the structures. In this thesis, it will be analyzed and found through measured hydraulic jack pressure, tendon elongation and prestressing control system that the tendancy of apparent curvature friction coefficient, the ratio of jacking force and required prestressing force, the ratio of initial jacking force and required prestressing force and compatibility of specified friction loss coefficient. The specified control limit for curvature friction coefficient of prestressing control system is about 0.25 and wobble friction coefficient 0.005. Thus, the control limit should be modified according to changed vale of friction coefficient.
