  • During preparation of narrow curved canals, procedural accidents such as, ledge, zipping, and transportation are frequently encountered and may lead to failure of endodontic therapy. To reduce these procedural errors and efficiently manage curved canals, various modifications in instrumentation technique and the design and flexibility of instruments have been advocated. This study compared the maintenance of the original canal curvature, cross sectional canal shape, and preparation time during instrumentation with stainless steel hand (K-Flexo) file, and nickel-titanium rotary files (Profile and Lightspeed). Thirty resin blocks with simulated curved canals of 20~25 degrees were used and divided into three groups of 10 each. In group 1, canals were instrumented using a quarter turn/pull technique with K-Flexofiles. Group 2 canals were prepared with rotary NiTi Profiles. Group 3 was prepared with rotary NiTi Lightspeed instrument. Before and after instrumentation, all canals were scanned using stereo microcope, FlexCam camera, and Photoshop 3.0 computer program. The results were as follows : 1. All groups showed some loss of canal curvature after instrumentation. Average loss of canal curvature was 8.6 degrees for K-Flexofile, 7.7 degrees for Profile, and 5.8 degrees for Lightspeed. Lightspeed exhibited significantly less curvature loss than K-Flexofile (p<0.05). 2. At the apical 1-mm level, Profile produced significantly rounder canals than Lightspeed (p<0.05). At the 3-mm level, Profile and Lightspeed exhibited significantly rounder canals than K-Flexofile (p<0.05). 3. Preparation with Lightspeed was significantly faster than Profile and K-Flexofile, and Profile was faster than K-Flexofile (p<0.05). 4. There was no significant difference in incidence of zipping between the hand K-Flexofile and rotary NiTi (Profile and Lightspeed) instruments. Most of apical canals were slightly widened near the apical foramen. As a results of this study, rotary NiTi instruments are superior to the K-Flexofile in regard to the maintenance of original canal curvature, cross-sectional shape and preparation time. But more investigations and studies should be needed to evaluate the ideal canal instrumentation.

  • Polystyrene microcapsules were prepared by microencapsulation technique of solvent-evaporation. These microcapsules were characterized by Infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and shape analysis. Fragrant water was used as a core material. Thermal and pH stabilities of polystyrene microcapsules were relatively excellent. And functional finishing on cotton fabric with microcapsules was applied.

  • Direct Printing Process is a suitable fabrication technique to develope pigment components whose dimensions are in nano. The success of this process depends on the sysmatic preparation of pigment millbase. Conventional millbase dispersions are constituted of the organic pigments, monomer, dispersant and solvents. An experimental study on the rheology of millbase dispersions is presented.

  • A 7-month-old, weak female dachshund dog which had signs of cough and sneezing while eating was admitted. This case was diagnosed as cleft hard palate by the physical and blood examination. After aseptic surgical preparation, a surgical method utilizing mucoperiosteal and buccal flap technique, in which accurate apposition and secure closure was very important, was used successfully. The defect of hard palate was healed completely on 10 days after surgery without any other complication.

  • In this study, piezoceramics/polymer composites with 3-3 connectivity were made by BURPS(Burnout Plastic Sphere) technique with PZT ceramics and plastic sphere. And the properties dependent on the Dextrin wt.% were investigated. The density of porous piezoceramic and piezoceramic/polymer composites were decreased almost linearly with increasing the Dextrin wt.%.

  • Nuclear transplantation techinque has been found to be the most potential and efficient method for producing a large number of genetically identical animals from a single embryo. The technical development of nuclear transplantation in mammals and its application to the production of cloned animals were reviewed. For the efficient and successful production of cloned embryos by nuclear transplantation, selection and micromanipulation of recipient eggs or embryos as capacious recipient cytoplasm, and benefitial preparation of multiple totipotent embryonic cells as donor nuclei, and also fusion technique are very critical. Recent works approaching to these critical points were introduced and discussed.

  • Chalcogenide and oxide heterostructures have been studied as a next-generation electronic materials, due to their interesting electronic properties, such as direct bandgap semiconductor, ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism, superconductivity, charge-density waves, and metal-insulator transition, and their modification near heterointerfaces, so called, electronic reconstruction. An angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique to unveil such novel electronic phases in detail, especially combined with high quality thin film preparation methods, such as, molecular beam epitaxy and pulsed laser deposition. In this article, the recent ARPES results in chalcogenide and oxide thin films will be introduced.

  • Transnasal Esophagoscopy allows the upper aerodigestive tract, from the nasal cavity to the gastric cardia to be examined in the outpatients department. It is well tolerated by patient with topical anesthesia alone and no sedation or patient preparation is required. The technique is easily learned and performed in the otolaryngologist and highly cost efficient. It is a useful tool for accurate diagnosis and can be used in a variety of office-based procedures.
