  • This paper presents experimental and analytical research results to predict nonlinear flexural behavior of corroded reinforced concrete beams. For this purpose, a series of test and an analytical simulation using the Maaddawy's model were carried. Test specimens of total 12 RC beams were placed in accelerated corrosion status using salt water spray test chamber for 5 months and 10 months, after they were preloaded up to 30% and 60% of the maximum load corresponding to nominal flexural strength. The test results showed that flexural strength and ductility decreased to 5.4% and 43% at the most respectively due to breakdown of bond at the steel-concrete interface. Comparative study between the analytical predictions and the experimental results showed that the Maaddawy's model can be applied to predict a real corroded RC flexural members.

  • An attempt was made to investigate the effect of TMB-8[3, 4, 5-trimethoxybenzoate-8 (N, N-diethylamino) octyl ester], which is known to be an inhibitor of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ release, on catecholamines (CA) secretion evoked by Ach, excess $K^+$, DMPP, McN-A-343 and caffeine from the isolated perfused rat adrenal glands and to cleaify its mechanism of action. The pretreatment with a low dose of TMB-8 $(10 \mu{M)}$ for 20 min led to marked inhibition in CA secretion evoked by Ach (5.32 mM), excess K^+$ (56 mM), DMPP $(100\;\mu{M)}$, McN-A-343 $(100 \mu{M)}$ and BAY-K 8644 $(10^{-5}M)$. Caffeine-induced CA secretion was simimlar to that of control only during the first periods (0-3 min) but thereafter maked inhibition in CA secretion evoked by caffeine was observed during the rest periods up to 30 min. The increased moderate concentration of TMB-8 $(30 \;\mu{M)}$ caused the result similar to that of $10 \;\mu{M}$ TMB-8. However, in adrenal glands preloaded with a high dose of TMB-8 $(100\;\mu{M)}$, CA releases evoked by Ach, excess $K^+$, DMPP, McN-A-343 and caffeine were almost completely blocked by the drug. These experimental data demonstrate that TMB-8 may inhibit cholinergic receptor-mediated and also depolarization-dependent Ca secretion, suggenesting that these TMB-8 effects seem to be mediated through inhibiting influx of extracellular calcium into the rat adrenal medullary chromaffin cells as well as reducing the release of calcium from intracellular sources.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine whether bromocriptine affects the catecholamines (CA) secretion evoked in isolated perfused rat adrenal glands, by cholinergic stimulation, membrane depolarization and calcium mobilization, and to establish the mechanism of its action. The perfusion of bromocriptine ($1~10{\;}{\mu}M$) into an adrenal vein, for 60 min, produced relatively dose-dependent inhibition in the secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by acetylcholine (ACh, 5.32 mM), DMPP ($100{\;}{\mu}M$ for 2 min), McN-A-343 ($100{\;}{\mu}M$ for 2 min), cyclopiazonic acid (CPA, $10{\;}{\mu}M$ for 4 min) and Bay-K-8644 ($10{\;}{\mu}M$ for 4 min). High $K^+$ (56 mM)-evoked CA release was also inhibited, although not in a dose-dependent fashion. Also, in the presence of apomorphine ($100{\;}{\mu}M$), which is also known to be a selective $D_2$-agonist, the CA secretory responses evoked by ACh, high potassium, DMPP, McN-A-343, Bay-K-8644 and cyclopiazonic acid were also significantly depressed. However, in adrenal glands preloaded with bromocriptine ($3{\;}{\mu}M$) in the presence of metoclopramide ($15{\;}{\mu}M$), a selective $D_2$-antagonist, the CA secretory responses evoked by ACh, high potassium, DMPP, McN-A-343, Bay-K-8644 and cyclopiazonic acid considerably recovered as compared to that of bromocriptine only. Taken together, these results suggest that bromocriptine can inhibit the CA secretion evoked by stimulation of cholinergic receptors, as well as by membrane depolarization, in the perfused rat adrenal medulla. It is thought this inhibitory effect of bromocriptine may be mediated by inhibiting the influx of extracellular calcium and the release from intracellular calcium stores, through the activation of dopaminergic $D_2$-receptors located in the rat adrenomedullary chromaffin cells. Furthermore, these findings also suggest that the dopaminergic $D_2$-receptors may play an important role in regulating adrenomedullary CA secretion.

  • In general, most of the beam-to-column connections for steel structures are regarded as either rigid connections or pin connections. Recently, the concept of a semi-rigid connection was introduced for a correct analysis of steel structures. Several experimental and theoretical researches have been performed regarding the structural behaviors of frames and buildings with semi-rigid connections. The results are not well known, and structural frame/building has not been designed to introduce the concept of semi-rigid connections between a beam and column until this time. To resolve this, this research depends on design specifications prepared by other advanced countries for the design of buildings with semi-rigid connections. Such a specification, however, should incorporate domestic characteristics of steel material properties and load conditions. This paper deals with structural capacities and deformable behaviors for a split-T tensile connection with F10T high-strength bolts to investigate the structural characteristics of semi-rigid frames. The experimental parameters include the thickness of T-flanges, painted or not, preloaded or not, and load pushover pattern. A total of 20 specimens were fabricated and tested with a 300-ton UTM. The structural capacities and behavior for split-T tensile connections were evaluated on each research parameter.

  • Granular activated carbon (GAC) has been identified as a best available technology (BAT) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for removal disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) were used to investigate four types of carbon (F400, Norit1240, Norit40S, and Aquasorb1500) for their affinity to absorb natural organic matter (NOM). DOC, $UV_{254}$, and Total dissolved nitrogen (TON) concentrations were measured in the column effluent to track GAC breakthrough. DOC and $UV_{254}$ breakthrough occurred at around 3500 bed volumes (BVs) of operation for all GACs investigated. The $UV_{254}$ breakthrough curves showed 33% to 48% at 8000 BVs, when the DOC was 48% to 65%. All GACs showed greater removal in DOC than $UV_{254}$. The NORIT1240 GAC was determined to have the highest adsorption capacity for DOC and $UV_{254}$. The removal of nitrate (NOTN) had not broken through over BVs. The initial TON breakthrough curves were started around 50%, when the DOC breakthrough was only 10 % at 500 BVs. The curves were gradually increased after 3500 BVs and approximately 69% through 81% of TON breakthrough occurred at 8000 BVs. All of the GACs were able to remove TON, in the case of this investigation the majority of the TON was present as DON. Because nitrate nitrogen was seldom removed and ammonium nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) was not detected in the effluent from RSSCTs even though raw water. The carbon usage rate of DOC was from 2 to 6 times less than that of TON. The NORIT1240 GAC demonstrated the best performance in terms of DOC removal, while the F400 GAC was best in terms of TON removal. Excitation emission matrix(EEM) analysis was used to show that GAC adsorption successfully removed most of Humic-like DOC and Fulvic-like DOCs. However, soluble microbial product(SMP)-like DOC in the absence of raw water were detected in the NORIT40S and Aquasorb1500 GAC. The authors assumed that this results is due probably to the part of GAC in the RSSCT which was converted into biological activated carbon(BAC). To compare with organics removal by GAC according to preloading, the virgin GACs had readily accessible sites that were adsorbed DOC more rapidly than preloaded GACs, but the TDN removal had not showed differences between those GACs.

  • The present study was attempted to examine the effect of staurosporine (STS) on secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by cholinergic stimulation and membrane depolarization from the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland and to establish its mechanism of action. The perfusion of STS $(3{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}3{\times}10^{-8}\;M)$ into an adrenal vein for 20 min produced a dose-dependent inhibition in CA secretion evoked by ACh $(5.32{\times}10^{-3}\;M),$ high $K^+\;(5.6{\times}10^{-2}\;M),$ DMPP $(10^{-4}\;M\;for\;2\;min),$ McN-A-343 $(10^{-4}\;M\;for\;2\;min),$ cyclopiazonic acid $(10^{-5}\;M\;for\;4\;min)$ and Bay-K-8644 $(10^{-5}\;M\;for\;4\;min).$ Also, in the presence of tamoxifen $(2{\times}10^{-6}\;M),$ which is known to be a protein kinase inhibitor, CA secretory responses evoked by ACh, high $K^+,$ DMPP, McN-A-343, Bay-K-8644 and cyclopiazonic acid were also significantly depressed. However, in adrenal glands preloaded with STS $(10^{-7}\;M)$ under the presence of phorbol-12, 13-dibutyrate $(10^{-7}\;M),$ a specific activator of protein kinases (for 20 min), the inhibitory effect of STS on CA secretory responses evoked by ACh, high $K^+,$ DMPP, McN-A-343, Bay-K-8644 and cyclopiazonic acid was greatly recovered to the extent of the control release as compared to those in the presence of STS only. These results demonstrate that STS causes the marked inhibition of CA secretion evoked by stimulation of cholinergic (both nicotinic and muscarinic) receptors as well as by membrane depolarization, indicating strongly that this effect may be mediated by inhibiting influx of extracellular calcium and release in intracellular calcium in the rat adrenomedullary chromaffin cells through preventing activation of protein kinases. Furthermore, these findings also suggest that these STS-sensitive protein kinases play a modulatory role partly in regulating the rat adrenomedullary CA secretion.

  • This study was performed to find the effect of parameters of numerical analysis model. To find the parameters of numerical analysis model, triaxial test and consolidation test were conducted and the results were compared and analyzed with various methods. Preloaded ground was analyzed with Hyperbolic and Modified Cam-Clay models. Hyperbolic model analysis result was good agreement with measured lateral displacement, and Modified Cam-Clay model agreed more than Hyperbolic model with settlement. When the parameters of models were changed, change of settlement on center of embankment and of maximum lateral displacement on distance 5m from end of embankment were compared. On Hyperbolic model the parameter K has large influence on settlement and lateral displacement. On Modified Cam-Clay model the parameters ${\Gamma}$ and M have large influence on settlement and lateral displacement, respectively.

  • The present study was attempted to investigate the effect of nicorandil, which is an ATP-sensitive potassium ($K_{ATP}$) channel opener, on secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by cholinergic stimulation and membrane depolarization from the isolated perfused rat adrenal glands. The perfusion of nicorandil ($0.3{\sim}3.0mM$) into an adrenal vein for 90 min produced relatively dose-and time-dependent inhibition in CA secretion evoked by ACh (5.32 mM), high $k^+$ (a direct membrane depolarizer, 56 mM), DMPP (a selective neuronal nicotinic receptor agonist, $100{\mu}M$ for 2 min), McN-A-343 (a selective muscarinic $M_1$ receptor agonist, $100{\mu}M$ for 4 min), Bay-K-8644 (an activator of L-type dihydropyridine $Ca^{2+}$ channels, $10{\mu}M$ for 4 min) and cyclopiazonic acid (an activator of cytoplasmic $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase, $10{\mu}M$ for 4 min). In adrenal glands simultaneously preloaded with nicorandil (1.0 mM) and glibenclamide (a nonspecific $K_{ATP}$-channel blocker, 1.0 mM), the CA secretory responses evoked by ACh, high potassium, DMPP, McN-A-343, Bay-K-8644 and cyclopiazonic acid were recovered to the considerable extent of the control release in comparison with that of nicorandil-treatment only. Taken together, the present study demonstrates that nicorandil inhibits the adrenal CA secretion in response to stimulation of cholinergic (both nicotinic and muscarinic) receptors as well as by membrane depolarization from the isolated perfused rat adrenal glands. It seems that this inhibitory effect of nicorandil may be mediated by inhibiting both $Ca^{2+}$ influx and the $Ca^{2+}$ release from intracellular store through activation of $K_{ATP}$ channels in the rat adrenomedullary chromaffin cells. These results suggest that nicorandil-sensitive $K_{ATP}$ channels may play an inhibitory role in the regulation of the rat adrenomedullary CA secretion.

  • Background: Intraosseous anesthesia (IO) allows the anesthetic solution to be injected directly into the cancellous bone. The anesthetic solution immediately reaches the periapical region, and thus the axonal area of the nerve, where it can temporarily disable the sodium pump. The effect is felt almost without any time delay, and only a small amount of anesthetic solution is required. Methods: This study aims to investigate the efficacy of IO using the AnestoⓇ device after infiltration anesthesia (IA) and/or inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia (IANB) failed to work in symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (hot tooth). The 33 patients included in the study were treated additionally with 1.7 ml articaine hydrochloride with 1:100,000 epinephrine hydrochloride (UltracainⓇ D-S, Sanofi-Aventis, Frankfurt, Germany) IO. Results: The electrical pulp test showed that 95.76% of the volunteers reacted positively to the combination of IANB or IA with the IO. In women, the additive IO was effective at 97.22%. In men, the IO led to pain elimination in 94.00% of cases. The duration of the IO was less than a quarter of an hour (13.03 min). The IO worked longer in women than in men (13.61 min vs. 12.33 min). Overall, more than every third tooth that needed trepanation was located in the posterior area of the mandible (36.4%). Treatment of hot teeth in this area was associated with an increased pulse rate and increased residual pain. There was a moderate correlation (Spearman-Rho [IRI] = 0.280) between the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score and bone density, and a significant correlation (IRI = 0.612) between subjective residual pain and bone width. The IO resulted in a moderate, transient increase in the pulse rate by approximately 20 bpm. This is similar to the temporary increase in heart rate after conventional anesthesia techniques in non-preloaded patients and can be considered clinically irrelevant. Conclusion: IO with the AnestoⓇ device as an extension and deepening of local pain elimination is recommended for the treatment of hot teeth.

  • Purpose Practical challenges are encountered in percutaneous intravascular procedures when applied to markedly angulated branching vessels. Herein, we introduced a folded-loop guidewire remodeling technique-the guidewire-shaping technique-to overcome difficult catheterization. Materials and Methods First, the tip of a 0.014-inch micro-guidewire was manually shaped like a pigtail loop. Second, the shaped guidewire was introduced into the microcatheter and was preloaded into the hollow metal introducer for suitability with the microcatheter hub. Gentle rotation of the guidewire after release from the microcatheter can create the preshaped pigtail loop configuration. On pulling back, the loop loosened, the configuration was changed to a small U-shaped tip, and the guidewire tip was easily introduced into the target artery. Results Between December 2019 and January 2022, the described technique was used in 64 patients (male/female, 49/15; mean age, 66.8 ± 9.5 years) for selective arterial embolization, after failed attempts with the conventional selection technique. The technique was successful in 63/64 patients (98%). The indications of embolization include transcatheter arterial chemoembolization, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemoptysis, trauma-induced bleeding, and tumor bleeding. Conclusion The folded-loop guidewire remodeling technique facilitates the catheterization of markedly angulated branching arteries; when usual catheterization method fails.
