  • Data-driven engineering is crucial for information delivery between design, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of prefabricated structures. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) is a critical methodology for prefabricated bridge structures. In this study, a novel concept of digital engineering model that combined existing knowledge of DfMA with object-oriented parametric modeling technologies was developed. Three-dimensional (3D) geometry models and their data models for each phase of a construction project were defined for information delivery. Digital design models were used for conceptual design, including aesthetic consideration and possible variation during fabrication and assembly. The seismic performance of a bridge pier was evaluated by linking the design parameters to the calculated moment-curvature curves. Control parameters were selected to consider the tolerance control and revision of the digital models. Digitalized fabrication of the prefabricated members was realized using the digital fabrication model with G-code for a concrete printer or a robot. The fabrication error was evaluated and the design digital models were updated. The revised fabrication models were used in the preassembly simulation to guarantee constructability. For the maintenance of the bridge, the as-built information was defined for the prefabricated bridge piers. The results of this process revealed that data-driven information delivery is crucial for lifecycle management of prefabricated bridge piers.

  • This paper investigates the seismic behavior of a prefabricated composite column which is made by onsite connection of precast composite column segments to accelerate bridge construction. Quasi-static cyclic loading tests were performed on three prefabricated composite columns with different connection details to find their seismic capacity. Test results show that the onsite connections remains in elastic range and no slip is observed as designed in spite of plastic hinge formation at the column. The test results also indicate that the prefabricated composite column has better overall seismic capacity compared to a conventional reinforced concrete column with seismic details.

  • Following natural disasters, there is a need to develop temporary housing through the rapid installation of mass-produced prefabricated housing. This study has developed a model construction manual for prefabricated temporary housing installable in underground spaces. First, the temporary housing prototype was drawn based on opinion poll results from earlier studies. $4.32m^2$ was calculated as the basic unit of the temporary housing living space for one person. Units included panel type, box type and mixed-type, for a variety of field conditions and scales. In order to enable space expansion and movement desirable to the user, the prototype was combination of panel and box types. The drawn prototype was utilized as the basic design template for producing prototypes and for the manual. Second, the possibility of utilizing subway stations as temporary housing was verified through the production of the prototype, and the construction process was summarized in the manual. The manual was developed in the form of a checklist to provide a guideline for users to build with prefab materials.

  • Prefabrication is a construction technique that is increasingly being applied to different building components due to its many benefits, including higher quality and lower waste. Despite these advantages, there are challenges in execution of these components on projects, due to transportation logistics, skilled labor requirements, and project management techniques. This paper investigates the current landscape of prefabricated pipe spools and potential solutions for minimizing these challenges. The scope of this research includes a proposed workflow, to standardize implementation of these components. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with industry professionals to assess current industry practices and the validity of the proposed workflow. Findings of this paper indicate that greater integration between design, fabrication and transportation is required to minimize inefficiencies when implementing prefabricated pipe spools on projects.

  • This research explores about the construction process and provision of Japanese Wooden Houses. Even though Prefabricated Houses appeared during the 1960's and the Platform Construction System during the 1970's, there was still a high demand for Conventional Wooden House, with a high demand by households on their 30's. These features were found in the areas of Hokkaido, Kyushu, Tokyo, and Osaka. Tokyo and capital region accommodate large number of the head offices of companies that produce Platform Construction System houses, and thus supply the largest amount of Platform Construction System houses. In capital region, land prices are so high, that they build houses as 3-Floors or above, and also driven by high cost of house construction, house performances are excellent. The houses of Osaka and Kinki region demonstrate similar characteristics to those of capital region. Osaka is headquartered by a group of head offices of companies that produce prefabricated houses, and thus holds more amount of prefabricated house supply than other regions. This city also shows high cost of house construction no less than capital region, and thus offers outstanding performance of house. In Kyushu, whereas Japanese wooden house building systems are supplied the most, Platform Construction System houses are provided the least in the nation. As this region offers rich amount of forest resources owing to mild humid climate which is ideal for vegetations, the Japanese wooden building systems use the timbers from this region. Hokkaido, a cold region, requires houses that offer outstanding performance of heat insulation. Therefore, Hokkaido shows more supplies of Platform Construction System houses that offers outstanding heat insulation performance. They import the timbers that form the structure framework of Platform Construction System houses from North America.

  • The purpose of this study is to present an improvement building construction process by using prefabricated materials. The current slab form work has waste factor by unnecessary process and not complete integration with the finishing process. Therefore the study used value stream analysis methodology for effective improvement of slab form work process. The main contents of the study are as follows; 1) Non-value adding activities were found at existing slab form work process by current state mapping(CSM) 2) Future state mapping(FSM) suggest process Integration to slab form work. 3) Slab form work is analyzed reduction time-cost by prefabricated material. The study recommends that, as a future research, development of tool and technique for the non-value adding activities are eliminated in building construction and application of prefabricated material should be increased.

  • For the fast construction and replacement of bridges in urban area, a prefabricated bridge system can be an excellent alternative. Details of prefabricated slabs for PSC girders were developed and static tests on shear connections were conducted to propose design equations of the shear connection. Stirrups and stud connectors were used as shear connectors and non-shrink mortar was used for the filling material in shear pockets for shear connectors. Stirrups and studs were fabricated to insert embedded nut-type devices in PSC girders. Shear strength of the shear connection considering chemical bond, friction and mechanical connectors was evaluated and empirical equations were suggested. Due to the mechanical connectors, ultimate slip capacity of the shear connection was sufficient for shear load redistribution, and suggested details of the shear connection showed good performance in terms of strength and ductility.

  • Increasing the volume of traffic on the roads causes social and economical problems such as increasing air-pollution and distribution cost. Prefabricated light weight bridge becomes a possible solution for these problems in the urban area where it is difficult to construct new one or expend the existing road. There are some merits in this kind of bridge. First, the design live and dead loads are minimized by allowing only passenger cars. Second employing prefabrication construction scheme reduces the construction time. Third, there is no need to buy land if the elevation road is placed on the top of existing one. In seismic design of bridges, base isolation has been an effective solution when the bridge has stiff piers and a heavy superstructure. The prefabricated light weight bridge has different dynamic characteristics from the ordinary bridges. In this paper, the applicability of base isolators such as lead rubber bearing and elastomeric bearing, to prefabricated light weight bridge is examined.
