Vacuum cooling were carried out for freshness keeping of shiitake mushroom. Shiitake mushroom was cooled within 30 minutes from $20.5^{\circ}C$ to $0.5^{\circ}C$ by vacuum cooling, and then temperature drop of $6.6^{\circ}C$ per weight loss of 1% was taken place during precooling. Weight loss, surface discoloration and softening were reduced by precooling. Judging from organoleptic properties such as cap opening, discoloration, texture and off-flavor, shelf-life of precooled mushroom was lengthed by 20% than that of non-treated mushrooms. Considering effect of packing material on freshness of shiitake mushroom after precooling, weight retention, hardness and organoleptic properties of mushroom packed with PVC wrap were superior to those packed in carton box.
This study was conducted to examine effects of harvest time (09:00 vs. 14:00), precooling at $4^{\circ}C$ vs. no precooling, and storage temperature (4 vs. $8^{\circ}C$) on the storage life of 'Maehyang' strawberry fruits for export. Fruits at a 60% ripe stage were harvested from a commercial greenhouse in Gyeongsangnamdo, Jinju on May 4, 2010. Fruits were precooled by a forced draft cooling for three hours, transported for about 30 minutes and then stored, immediately. Small precoolers set in the farm were used for precooling. Fruits were placed in constant temperature chamber (4 or $8^{\circ}C$) after packaging using PVC wrap and a cardboard box. Fruits were examined for their changes in weight, hardness, Hunter color values, soluble solids content (SSC), and incidence of gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) during storage at a two days interval from May 6 to May 14, 2010. Hardness and SSC decreased as the ripening stage progressed. The Hunter's 'L' and 'a' value of fruit color decreased as time passed. Also, fresh weight decreased during storage at all temperatures. Soft rot appeared on epidermal tissues and followed by gray mold. Incidence of gray mold was greater at $8^{\circ}C$ storage temperature than in $4^{\circ}C$ storage temperature. However, no difference by the harvested time and precooling. The results indicate that effectiveness for keeping the freshness was best achieved by precooling at $4^{\circ}C$ and storage at $4^{\circ}C$, respectively.
To invedtigate the effect of refrigerate case on the Quality of strawberry during circulation, the temperature changes on the amounts of dry ice and ice cube were examined. And also, the effect of precooling on the changes in temperature and quality of the fruits were studied. Strawberry precooling-treated at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 24hours was prolonged the shelf-life, and Quality was Progressed.150g of dry-ice Per kg of the strawberry was kept quality. It was prolonged more 2 days than present circulation system.
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of precooling and application of gaseous $ClO_2$ on the retention of freshness and quality of 'Maehyang' strawberry fruits intended for export. 'Maehyang' strawberry fruits (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa Duch.) were grown in commercial greenhouses and then harvested. Fruits of uniform and medium size at 60% ripeness were selected and assigned to one of four treatment groups: non-treatment (control), precooling only (PO), gaseous $ClO_2$ only (GCO) or precooling combined with gaseous $ClO_2$ (P + C). Weight loss was lowest in the PO treatment and greatest in the GCO treatment after export. Compared to the control and PO treatment groups, strawberry fruits in the GCO treatment group maintained high brightness and high chroma. Six days after shipping, fruits in the P + C treatment group had the highest soluble solids content, even as high as $10.05^{\circ}Brix$; the lowest value was observed in the PO treatment. The incidence rate of gray mold in strawberry fruits was 20% and 17% in the control and the PO treatment, respectively; in the GCO treatment, the incidence rate of gray mold amounted to 10%. No gray mold was observed in the P + C treatment group. These results indicate that gaseous $ClO_2$ treatment combined with precooling (P + C) was effective in maintaining the freshness of 'Maehyang' strawberry fruits intended for export from South Korea to Hong Kong.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of precooling in the prolongation of freshness of Tsugaru apple. Tsugaru apple was precooled to 1$^{\circ}C$ by the pressure cooler and stored at 1$^{\circ}C$ and 25$^{\circ}C$. Precooling time was required about 5 to 6 hours for Tsugaru apple that filled in the plastic container and faster than that in the carton. The respiration rate was decreased with the reduction of the product temperature by precooling. Tsugaru apple could store about 9 days and 35 days at room temperature and 1$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of eight everbearing strawberry cultivars and the effect of precooling treatment to maintain the quality during storage and shelf life of 'Charlotte'. Several quality parameters including firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), color, soluble sugars, and organic acids were evaluated. For Successful marketing everbearing strawberries required more than 1 N of firmness and $6^{\circ}Brix$ of SSC, respectively. 'Albion', 'Charlotte', and 'Goha' cultivars were higher in fruit SSC and 'Charlotte' cultivar was higher in fruit firmness among eight cultivars examined in this study. Fruit had more bright red color in 'Charlotte', 'Flamingo', 'GW-4', and 'San Andreas', which may reflect the consumer acceptance. Physicochemical characteristics of 'Charlotte' strawberry after with/without room precooling treatment were evaluated during storage at $4^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$ and additional 3 days at $25^{\circ}C$ for shelf-life. Weight loss increased about 8% in the fruits stored at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 days, while in low temperature storage was about 2% for 7 days showing precooling was more effect on during shelf life periods rather than storage periods. Decay was not found during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ regardless of precooling treatment, but fungal growth was found in all the treatments after transferred to room temperature. Precooling treatment did not affect fruit color in shelf life period. For advanced marketing, everbearing strawberry should maintain in low temperature less than $4^{\circ}C$ to sustain quality, but the room precooling showed less significant effect to maintain quality on 'Charlotte' cultivar.

The purpose of research is to understand the characteristics of refrigeration system having a liquid-vapor phase separator after expansion device and precooling heat exchanger. After expansion process of typical refrigerant of freezer, R134a, the cold vapor of the expanded refrigerant mixture is separated in the liquid-vapor separator and introduced in the precooling heat exchanger to enable the liquid refrigerant to be subcooled. The analysis results showed that the increasing rate of refrigeration capacity and COP can be 8.6% and 1.4%, each. The cause of these performance improvements is due to the difference of the slope of saturated vapor and saturated liquid lines in Mollier diagram of refrigerant.

A thermodynamic cycle analysis is performed for refrigerator-precooled Linde-Hampson hydrogen liquefiers, including catalysts for the ortho-to-para(o-p) conversion. three different configurations of the liquefying system, depending upon the method of the o-p conversion, are selected for the analysis. After some simple and justifiable models are introduced, a general analysis program to predict the liquid yield and the figure of merit(FOM) is developed with incorporating the commercial computer code for the hydrogen properties. The discussion is focused on the effect of the two primary design parameters-the precooling temperature and the high pressrure of hydrogen. When the precooling temperature is in the range between 45 and 60 K, the optimal high pressure for the maximal liquid yield is found to be in the range between 100 to 140 bar, regardless of the o-p conversion. However, the FOM can be maximized at slightly smaller values of high pressures. It is remarkable to observe that the lower precooling temperatures are favorable since both the liquid yield and the FOM can be obtained without compressing hygrogen to extremely high pressures.

The paper describes development and evaluation of a simple method for determining gradient of modified linear setpoint variation to reduce peak electrical cooling demand in buildings using building precooling and setpoint adjustment. The method is an approximated approach for minimizing electrical cooling demand during occupied period in buildings and involves modified linear adjustment of cooling setpoint temperature between $26^{\circ}C$ and $28^{\circ}C$. The gradient of linear variation or final time of linear increase is determined based on the cooling load shape in conventional cooling control having a constant setpoint temperature. The potential to reduce peak cooling demand using the simple method was evaluated through building simulation for a calibrated office building model considering four different weather conditions. The simple method showed about 30% and 20% in terms of reducing peak cooling demand and chiller power consumption, respectively, compared to the conventional control.
