  • The aim of this study was to assess the effect of pre-aeration on sludge solubilization and the behaviors of nitrogen, dissolved sulfide, sulfate, and siloxane. The results of this study showed that soluble chemical oxygen demand in sewage sludge could be increased through pre-aeration. The pre-aeration process resulted in a higher methane yield compared to the anaerobic condition (blank). The pre-aeration of sewage sludge, therefore, was shown to be an effective method for enhancing the digestibility of the sewage sludge. In addition, this result confirms that the pre-aeration of sewage sludge prior to its anaerobic digestion accelerates the growth of methanogenic bacteria. Removal rates for $NH_3$-N and T-N increased simultaneously during pre-aeration, indicating simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The siloxane concentration in sewage sludge decreased by 40% after 96 hr of pre-aeration; in contrast, the sulfide concentration in sewage sludge did not change. Therefore, pre-aeration can be employed as an efficient treatment option to achieve higher methane yield and lower siloxane concentration in sewage sludge. In addition, reduction of nitrogen loading by pre-aeration can reduce operating costs to achieve better effluent water quality in wastewater treatment plant and benefit the anaerobic process by minimizing the toxic effect of ammonia.

  • Abstract-Si direct bonding(SDB) technology is very attractive for both Si-on-insulator(SOI) electric devices and MEMS applications because of its stress free structure and stability. This paper presents on pre-bonding according to HF pre-treatment conditions in Si wafer direct bonding. The characteristics of bonded sample were measured under different bonding conditions of HF concentration, and applied pressure. The bonding strength was evaluated by tensile strength method. The bonded interface and the void were analyzed by using SEM and IR camera, respectively. Components existed in the interlayer were analysed by using FT-lR. The bond strength depends on the HF pre-treatment condition before pre-bonding (Min : 2.4kgf/cm$^2$∼Max : 14.9kgf/cm$^2$).

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of low frequency electro-acupuncture at ST39 on intestinal motility in rats. Methods : Intestinal hypermotility and hypomotility in rats were induced by oral carbachol ingestion and loperamide injection. Rats were divided into seventeen experimental groups including the normal and holder groups. The rats were induced with intestinal hypermotility and hypomotility and divided into pre and post-treatment groups. I also carried out acupuncture (needle retention) and low frequency electro-acupuncture at ST39 or the sham point. I fed charcoal to rats after the treatment and calculated its distance travelled in the gastrointestinal tract, which was compared by groups so as to determine which treatment was more effective in increasing or decreasing intestinal motility. Results : 1. In normal rats, low frequency electro-acupuncture at ST39 showed no significant effect on intestinal motility. 2. Pre-treatment with acupuncture (needle retention) at ST39 on intestinal motility over-activated with carbachol significantly decreased intestinal motility in rats. 3. Pre-treatment with low frequency electro-acupuncture at ST39 on intestinal motility over-activated with carbachol significantly decreased intestinal motility in rats. 4. Pre-treatment with acupuncture (needle retention and low frequency electro-acupuncture) at ST39 showed no significant effect on intestinal hypomotility in rats that was induced by loperamide injection. Conclusions : These results suggest that acupuncture (needle retention) and low frequency electro-acupuncture at ST39 have preventive effects on intestinal hypermotility. Regardless of the stimulation method, ST39 showed an effect on intestinal motility. Further study is required to confirm other effects of ST39.

  • For the biodiesel fuel production from microalgae, the lipid from wet and dry samples of green algae Scenedesmus sp. was extracted by using various solvents and pre-treatment methods. Extraction yield of the lyophilized sample was better than that of dry sample. Chloroform/methanol (2:1, v/v) and ultrasonication or homogenization method were also selected as the most effective solvent and pre-treatment methods for lipid extraction, respectively. Under these constraint conditions, optimization experiment of lipid extraction was investigated by Taguchi approach using orthogonal matrix $L_9$ ($3^4$) method. The optimum extraction conditions of lipid extraction was obtained at pre-treatment of homogenization, extraction time of 5 hour, temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, and solvent ratio of 1:20 (w/v). Yield of extraction at optimized condition was 20.55% and it was 96% of total lipid content (21.38%) of Scenedesmus sp.

Si-F bonds on Si surface after HF pre-treatment are replaced by Si-OH during a DI water rinse. Consequently, hydrophobic wafer was bonded by hydrogen bonding of Si-OH$\cdots$(HOH$\cdots$HOH$\cdots$HOH)$\cdots$OH-Si. • Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) has officially announced 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) derivatization - high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods for analysis of formaldehyde. This study was conducted to develop a convenient derivatization method for cosmetics by improving complex pre-treatment procedures included in KFDA method. To simplify pre-treatment procedures of KFDA method, reaction conditions including pH, time and temperature were optimized. This pre-treatment method does not require complicate pre-treatment steps of KFDA method such as pH adjustment of test solution with acetate buffer (pH 5.0), solvent-solvent partitioning with dichloromethane and concentrating procedure with vacuum evaporator. Formaldehyde-dinitrophenylhydrazone (formaldehyde-DNP) product produced by derivatization reaction was separated and quantified with a reversed-phase HPLC, which was slightly modified with KFDA method. The linearity test showed good results with 0.9999 of correlation coefficient ($r^2$) in the range of 2 ~ 40 ppm of standard solutions. In this method, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) values for formaldehyde were 0.2 ppm and 0.5 ppm, respectively. In addition, recovery test demonstrated that the method was also accurate and reproducible. Therefore, the proposed method can be applicable to rapid analysis of formaldehyde in cosmetics.

  • Electrochemical water treatment process as a useful treatment method for the removal of non-degradable matter has been consistently studied for several decades. Key process of electrochemical water treatment are oxidation reaction from an anode and reduction from a cathode. In this study, the effect of pre-treatment methods in the insoluble electrode manufacturing process for the water treatment has been evaluated for the life time of electrode The results of this study showed that pre-treatment methods of a base metal such as surface roughness, clean method and interlayer formation influenced to life time of electrode when the same condition (catalyst electrode layer coating method and material system) was applied for pre-treatment methods. This study was conducted by using $IrO_2/Ti$ electrode In the test of sand-blasting process, an electrode manufactured by using sanding media of different sizes resulted in the most effective electrode life time when the size of alumina was used for $212{\sim}180{\mu}m$ praticle size (#80). The most effective method was considered using arc plasma in the additional roughness control and cleaning process, sputtering method to form Ta type interlayer formation process.

  • The empty fruit bunch fibers(EFB) of oil palm were examined for optimal utilization of the EFB fibers. The EFB fibers were obtained by shredding EFB, followe by removal of fines. The surface properties of the fibers were modified with various pre-treatments, such as hot water extraction, the soaking treatments with NaOH, $ClO_2$ and n-hexane. The changes in the fiber surface were examined with FT-IR method, which showed the changes in chemical compositions such as pectin, lignin, and etc. according to the pre-treatment methods. And the z-directional tensile testing of the fiber mold made of the treated EFB fibers showed the changes in the bonding strength by the pre-treatments. The fiber mold made of EFB fibers treated with $ClO_2$ showed the greater increase in the tensile energy absorption although the NaOH treatment resulted in the severer impact on the EFB fibers.

  • Thermal shock or overheating of WGS catalyst for SEWGS system during hydrogen pre-treatment can cause reactivity decay of the catalyst. To select appropriate pre-treatment condition, temperature profiles of catalyst bed (or outside fluidized particle bed of bed insert) during pre-treatment were measured and then CO conversions of those catalysts during WGS reaction were also measured and compared. Drastic overheating of catalyst took place when we reduce catalyst at fixed bed condition and these catalysts showed low CO conversion during WGS reaction. On the contrary, there was no overheating of catalyst at fluidized bed condition not only physical mixing case but also bed insert case. Spring type bed insert showed acceptable CO conversion even at low WGS content. Consequently, feasibility of high CO conversion without decay of reactivity of catalyst and holding the WGS catalyst inside the SEWGS reactor as tablet shape were confirmed using spring type bed insert.
